In my native district (Tirunelveli) the word pitchai/pitchu gets attached to the name if the child was born after a long time, after a lot of begging by the parents to the God. The God sends that angel of a child as an alms. So the grateful parents attaches the pitchai/pitchu to the name so that it will never be forgotten.

There is another uncommon name but common in this district - Kulathu - men have this name I have not seen any lady with this name - any specific reason ?

Here Nellai Govindan is in Ekantham No Devis and Shivalingam on his chest

Nellai Govindar: Adjacent to the main deity is the Sannidhi of Lord Vishnu in the sleeping posture (Ananthasayanar), called the Nellai Govindan. Lord Vishnu is reclining on His serpent (Shesha) with a Shivalinga on His chest and Is seen performing Abhishegam with His right hand to a Shivalinga beside Him. This Sannidhi is considered to be the second Garbagraha. There is a urchavar statue of Lord Vishnu with a Kamandalam in His hand, ready to perform the marriage of His sister Ganthimathi Amman with Lord Nellaiappar. It is believed that Lord Vishnu had come down from Vaikundam to preside over His sister Goddess Kanthimathi's marriage with Lord Nellaiappar.

In Tirunelveli They are like friendly neighbours living in "Twin Garbhagraha" (Bifid Uterus!) sharing one common wall ! But travel down for about 60 KMs to Tirukurunkudi ( associated with Sundaram Iyegar - Kaikasi Puranam and the Brahma Rakshasu) They fight it out in SC!

Both Vaishnavites and Shaivites worshipped the deities. However, on June 1, 2004, the Shiva Sannadhi was demolished and removed and the idol was kept in Dhanya Vaasam (inside paddy). There was a commotion/opposition by the members of the general public.

This Vaishnavite shrine had Vishnu in three different postures -- standing, sitting and reclining postures -- inside the sanctum sanctorum. The petitioners claimed that the Shiva idol was removed as it was perceived to be obstructing the view of Lord Vishnu.

The Jeer and the Hindu Religious and Endowments Department, however, stated that the temple renovation work was not for removing the idol but for providing proper place and eminence appropriate to the lingam as per saastric prescriptions. They contended that before taking up the renovation work, a Deiva Prasanam was conducted to seek divine sanction and to perform the requisite rituals found necessary and to rectify the defects, if any. The Prasanam favoured a separate shrine and madapalli exclusively for Lord Shiva as per Saastric prescriptions.

Rejecting the submissions, Justice Mala said the Saiva Vellalar Association members, who are offended by removal of the idol, are entitled to restore the idol at its original position where it remained since time immemorial.

The SC has stayed this High Court order - It is like Babri Masjid Ramajanama Bhoomi in dispute!

Therum Porum!

Mahatma Gandhi during a visit to Devakottai on January 24, 1934 tried to broker peace between the ‘Nattars’ Over 70 persons were arrested on Sunday for burning and damaging houses of Dalits during temple car procession at Seshasamudiram village in Sankarapuram taluk in Villupuram.(Kallars) and Dalits but the controversy would not die down, Mr Chandran recalled. He said the car festival witnessed the first major law and order problem in 1875 when eight people were killed in a clash. Since 1896, the festival was held every year but not without clashes between Nattars and Dalits, he says in his book “Therum Porum.”

Kandadevi is close to Devakottai - I remember this place - Violinist Alagirisami who accompanied MS in her UN Concert comes from this place!
