Dear RR ji,

Have you realized a trend in this story?

Ok here goes..she has "broken" all forms of conservatism here:

1)Firstly she married a person from a different caste.

2)She did the final rites for her father.

3)She works in a crematorium which is a taboo for a female and that too a Brahmin.

I have a feeling that she wants to prove a point here that nothing should restrict a woman in any way...that is a woman is free to marry the person she loves even if he is not her caste..a woman is free to preform final rites for her parents and also work in a job that is considered a taboo for females.

So may be she wants to just be totally free.

So should her courage be admired?
Dear Renu,

Yes! I understand that she is a brave person and wants to live a life which is different from the normal women. If she was not a master's

degree holder, I would NOT have pitied her plight. Cleaning the premises of a crematorium is not a job to be done by this lady but she

wants to break all the rules. But still, the guy to whom she got married should have found a more dignified job for her since 'vettiyAn'
job has its own taboo. Who knows! Now that she has set a new trend and appeared in the NEWS, more women might follow her! :flock:

P.S: I am not against those who are NOT brahmins but against this guy who allowed his wife to do this job, to earn for the family!

You can directly ask me Sir!

I am NOT against I C or I R marriages; but against those who make a brahmin girl reach THIS plight.

''Seyyum thozhilE Deivam''; but it a surely a pity to read this story.

RRji,

There is no need to be defensive when it comes to IC and IR marriages. They are certainly aberrations induced by hormones and are secretly regretted later.

This brahmin woman lost her way the day she fell in love with an NB. That one blunder has landed her in this plight. A husband who did not have the resources and the moral integrity to take care of a wife until she gets a gainful employment matching her qualification was the single great misfortune that struck her. She is perhaps exploited to the hilt and is suffering from the Stockholm syndrome.

Unfortunately in some brahmin families such accidents do happen because of irresponsible parents and then it is the same pathetic story and the script and the end is always predictable.

If this woman were not a PG and instead just illiterate the story would have been horribly different.

Dear RR ji,

Yes I totally understand the taboo but at the same time I would not want to disrespect the profession of a "vettiyAn" cos the job is one of the most important jobs in the world and has dignity too cos its not an illegal or immoral job. Any job done well is next to godliness.

But why did she choose this job only she knows and we can only keep guessing.

May be she wants some form of escapism in life.

.........
Dear Vaagmi Sir,

I have seen a few brahmin girls living happily after I C or I R marriages. Some are adored by the family in which they enter. So, it

depends on the person and not his caste / religion. Also, many brahmin girls dislike the orthodox life and prefer such marriages.

One orthodox boy in my extended family found it extremely difficult to get a well educated girl from our circle. The tuft he had

was creating problem! After a long wait, he got a beautiful, educated brahmin girl and leads a happy life. :)

Dear Renu,

It is true that 'seyyum thozhilE Deivam'. If all the vettiyAns go on a strike, I wonder how the world would be!

But still, the plight of this well educated lady is something not acceptable to me. It is ONLY my view.

If she had got into a family which respected her EDUCATION, her life would have been totally different.

So ma ny .members of our forum expressed their views about this topic without viewing this episode from a different angle. What I think is the lady must have been brainwashed by vested interests in conluson with her hubby to bring down thebrahahmin community to the vettiyan level to show that they were successful in bringing the brahmins to that low caste level. If not PG brahmin lady could not have taken such a decision. Some of you may not agree with me but that must be the fact. Entha puththil entha paambu irukkiratho yaar kandathu"

So ........ You also AGREE that her plight is BECAUSE of her marriage with THIS guy!!

This woman says she was born in a "Gurukkal" family and that her father was a Sivan koil priest. She married a non-brahmin, love marriage and only her father supported her; her mother and 2 sisters dissociated from her. Developments in her life have made her work now as a crematorium manager. I don't find anything abnormal in this because I have seen in many places that there is no separate caste like vettiyan to do the corpse-burning duty. When my maternal grandfather died in 1949, in a small rural centre of Travancore, the Thandans (coconut tree climbers) felled a huge mango tree from our compound and the pyre was (I presume, because, as a child I was not allowed to witness the cremation which was in another plot of land owned by my grandfather, situated about two furlongs away.) built with those mango logs as this is the normal custom even now in affluent Kerala Tharawads.

My grandfather's younger cousin (paternal) remained throughout that day and night, in that plot, along with our servants (nairs) and another brahmin till the ashes were disposed of in a rivulet on the second day. Later, I gathered that a close family member has to do this duty so that the servants, etc., do not neglect their watch and the cremation goes uninterrupted and unpolluted by foxes or wild dogs polluting, etc.

So, essentially there seems to be nothing wrong in the corpse-burning work itself. In Kasi, Dasaswamedh Ghat also, I was told that Pandas do the job and pocket the moneys.

Finally, are the Tamil Brahmin organisations ready to accept Gurukkals as equal to pure Tabras?

In the North most of the menial jobs are done by Brahmins

We have seen the plight of North Indian Brahmins working as guards, servants, cooks and even doing sanitation work

The most important aspect is that in this case an educated lady is pushed to burning corpses. I feel that vested interests might have pushed this woman to this job, a point shared by shri Narasimhan.

Why her husband is not taking care of her. Is he incapacitated to fend his family. The plight of the woman is because of this so called husband. I came to know that non brahmin men who marry brahmin girls in Erode, kovai etc push the women to do menial jobs including serving other men.

All ******* associations should help this woman to come out of the misery .

Also this story is well publicized so that our girls are aware of the reality and not fall into traps

Dear Members, This strange Topic has come up & caused many reactions, But almost all have expressed their opinions saying that the lady is a Post- graduate & should not continue this Job, & come out gracefully & do any other Job which will not be despicable.
There are a few aspects which make me to write dispassionatly, which are as follows :-
1) Her father is Gurukkal / Archakar (which we Iyers/ Iyengars do not consider for Marriage )
2) she has married a Non-Brahmin, she says with the consent of her Father, who hails from Gurukkal tradion, having no scope to mingle with Iyer/ Iyengar , let alone marriage alliances. Had it been an Iyen, story would have been different, even in these days of Inter-cast marriages ?
3) Having become Husband & wife & her father is a party to it, He cannot have any role , either to get her come out of the Vettian Velai nor think of getting her a normal Job, to ensure wiping out this un- graceful , codemnable episode.
4)Only un-educated/ sturdy/ by birth Hard-hearted can really do these jobs, without attaching their mind.
5)let alone her make-up of mind , She / her husband & lady friends should explain her that not only her Mental health has been affected, it is likely her physical health can easily a get affected in course of years.
6) We have analysed more than enough, i suggest, we wait for 6 months & revive the Topic, if she continues this shameful job. I feel that her Husband who is now HALF dikshidar, should take her out of this role & even get a Job, where she need not to attend the area of work, so that she can forget this as if a DREAM ?
