This stretch of metro will be useful for whom?

who are likely to maximum benefit?

unless they find a solution to the last mile problem -transport from home/office to metro stations -feeder buses etc , thy are likely to run empty.delhi metro is

struggling with this type of issue. but metro travel is comfortable though

Free tickets for 1 week were to be provided...Not sure if this is going to be implemented...Will popularize it

most from chennai must have been thrilled to see the new metro and convenience it offers.

in delhi also we had similar feelings when sahib singh varma ,the CM then inagurated it in a rural belt in delhi.

Local people travelled miles to get into the metro and get first hand feeling.

Now metro being in the third phase of expansion, no one particularly takes notice of it except those who require a particular linkage for their use.

Young woman steers Chennai’s first metro train

June 29, 2015

The first train which left at 12.15 p.m. from Alandur to Koyambedu
was driven by A. Preethi, a 28-year-old diploma holder in engineering.

Steered by a young woman, the first train of the Chennai Metro Rail chugged along
from Alandur Station in Chennai on Monday after being flagged off by Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa.

The first train which left at 12.15 p.m. from Alandur to Koyambedu was
driven by A. Preethi, a 28-year-old diploma holder in engineering
from Government Dharmambal Polytechnic College in Chennai.

The Chief Minister inaugurated it by flagging it off via live video from the State Secretariat in Chennai.
“I am excited, my daughter’s dream of becoming a loco
pilot of Metro Rail has come true,” Preethi’s father R Anbu told PTI.

He explained how his daughter was chasing her dream of becoming a loco pilot
after the metro rail project began taking shape.

“She quit her first job, applied for a job in Chennai Metro rail,
and she was the first woman to get selected,” he said with joy.

“Three other women joined as pilots after her and I am happy that she was successful,” he said.
Preethi was trained for a year and half like others in Chennai and in Delhi for the purpose.

Meanwhile, the sprawling and swanky Alandur metro station, the biggest in Chennai,
was brimming with activity, with enthusiastic passengers eager to board the first train.

“I wanted to board the first metro train,
I hope metro makes travel easier and a pleasure,” said K Ramesh a young executive.

The costliest Metro in the country

Kolkata Metro is the cheapest with a maximum fare of Rs. 25. In Delhi, a distance of 9-12 km costs only Rs. 16.

The city’s much-delayed and much-awaited project — Metro Rail — might end up burning a hole in the pockets of commuters. With a fare of Rs. 40 for 10 km between Alandur and Koyambedu, Chennai Metro Rail is now the costliest in the country.

Kolkata Metro is the cheapest with a maximum fare of Rs. 25. In Delhi, a distance of 9-12 km costs only Rs. 16. Even a distance greater than 44 km will cost a person taking the Delhi Metro only Rs.30 for a one-way ride. Jaipur Metro, which began operations this month, has an introductory fare for the first six months. The highest fare is just Rs. 15.

On the Mumbai Metro, a one-way ticket between Ghatkopar and Versova – a distance of 12.5 kms — costs Rs. 40, while a return ticket is Rs. 60. In Bengaluru, a one-way ticket costs Rs. 17 on the operational line between Bayappanhalli and M.G. Road.

Let us assume that a person working in Alandur and living near Koyambedu, takes the Metro daily, 5 days a week. On an average, it’s 22 days a month. This means, she will be spending Rs. 80 per day to travel on the metro. Add to that a cost of Rs. 10 to park her bike at the parking lot per day. For 22 days a month, she will be spending Rs. 1,980 to travel on the Metro.

However, if she were to travel with 2-3 family members or friends on this route, a taxi or an auto is going to be cheaper, which defeats the whole purpose of a mass transportation utility like the metro rail. No doubt she will save time and may be free of dust and pollution on the roads.

On the suburban route, a ticket between Chennai Beach and Guindy costs just Rs. 5. On the MRTS, between Velachery and Chennai Beach — a distance of 19 km — the fare is Rs.10.

It is possible that Chennai Metro Rail will end up remaining outside the purview of the lower middle class and workers in the unorganised sector.

Metro Rail sources said much of the network runs underground in the city, unlike other centres, as a result of which the charges on air conditioning and electricity charges will be much higher. Hence, the rates.

Government also should reduce bus services running in the train route.. this will popularize train travel. People can reach their destination without traffic jams in minimal time. Environment gets greener and cleaner - people live longer.. two wheelers die less in roads... Overall things to enjoy and benefit for all!

Even by bus it takes 30-35 mts with minimal traffic..Otherwise it takes up to 50 minutes...Now with a travel time of just 15 minutes in Metro it will be a boon! There are no underground tunnels in this segment...But going forward the expanded metro will have...So keeping that in mind may be Metro has fixed the rates..The Hindu article refers to taking an auto as a cheaper alternative for group of 3 persons...Look at the pollution and also the time taken in auto...There is no comparison

Delhi had an airport metro operated by private agency Reliance connectung international airport to city centre. It had wild rates -rs 160 . it used to run mostly empty.

private operator hung up and it got taken over by DMRC who halved the rates. The occupation got a little better.

If rates are lowered , they can transport more volumes of traffic.

Delhi metro is always full.

It is cheaper , faster and comfortable. Only last mile connectivity issues.

Reduce fare: Karunanidhi

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
DMK Supremo M. Karunanidhi on Monday called for reducing the fare of the Chennai Metro, saying it was 250 per cent more than what was being charged by the Delhi Metro.

“The State government and the Chennai Metro should take into consideration the buying capacity of the people and reduce the fare. I am making this demand as a former Chief Minister, one who initiated the works for the launch of the Metro,” Mr. Karunanidhi said in a statement.

Mr. Karunanidhi said that Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, by choosing to inaugurate the Metro project through video conferencing, had not treated the Rs. 14,600-crore project with the importance that it deserved. “Though both the Centre and the State government have invested equally for the project, Union Ministers were not invited for the inauguration,” he said. The DMK leader said Ms. Jayalalithaa adopted an inconsistent policy when it came to the Chennai Metro and after coming to power, she argued that a monorail was better than the Metro. “But subsequently, she opted for the Metro. She speeded up the project only after DMK treasurer M.K. Stalin threatened to launch a protest,” he said.
