A Novel poem about Shiva

King Bhoja Raja was an erudite scholar and a poet. He was famous for his generosity and financial help for the poets. Though India had many kings in the name of Bhoja and Vikramaditya one Bhoja who ruled at the time of Kalidasa was part of many interesting stories.


A poor poet wanted to make some money by writing some poems. But the poets of his days dealt with almost all the subjects in the world. So he thought of something very novel. “ Let me write a poem saying Shiva is dead, Bhoja will show much interest because he is a great devotee of Shiva”, he thought. So he went to Bhoja and read his revolutionary piece of poem saying ‘Shiva is dead’.
When he read the poem Bhoja asked him to explain the meaning. The poet did explain: Half of Shiva’s body was taken by Uma (in Ardhanari form); the other half was taken by Narayana ( in Sankara Narayanan form). So Shiva is dead! He explained.


Bhoja was not happy. He put a few clever questions to the poet: What happened to the moon on his head, snake in his neck, the great Ganges on the hair, his begging bowl in the hand and above all his good virtues?

The poet was taken by surprise. He thought he could make easy money. In a short time he recomposed himself and gave a suitable answer: Oh Ye King, I forgot to tell you. The river Ganges merged into the sea; crescent moon went up above in the sky, snake had gone in to the hole in the earth; Shiva’s begging bowl came in to my hand; his generosity and other great virtues had gone to King Bhoja Raja.


The king was very happy to hear this and he admired the poet’s wisdom and presence of mind. He gave him lot of gold coins and honoured him suitably. Ancient Indian poets were famous for their wit and wisdom and repartees. Sense of humour earned them good reputation and much money. (This verse is in the collection of Tamil anonymous poems).

ஒரு பாதி மால் கொள மற்றொரு பாதி உமையவள் கொண்
டிருபாதியாலும் இறந்தான் புராரி இரு நதியோ
பெரு வாரிதியில் பிறை வானில் சர்ப்பம் பிலத்திற் கற்ப
தருவான போச கொடையுடன் கையோடென்கை தந்தனனே (தனிப்பாடல்)

Dear Sir,

Are we not forgetting the most important point here???

Both Uma and Vishnu occupy ONLY the left side of Siva

and that can be done by only one of them at a time.

The right half is always Siva himself. So he can never disappear.

Vishnu is defined in two ways...

1. As the loving husband of Lakshmi Devi

2. As the loving wife of Lord Siva.

So it is not so simple to make Siva disappear!

I really wish that you had given the caption as
"Is Lord Siva dead?" instead of the one you had given.
We must not use inauspicious captions.
God - especially Siva - can never die or disappear
since he is the one in charge of dissolution and destruction.

But I agree with you on one point. Inauspicious headings should not used for many reasons. But Hinduism is the only religion in the world , where even poets poke fun on Gods. Hindus are the only race in the world who brings God to human level like a lover, lady love, servant, master, child etc. Other religions keep God far away with a reverential HE, not even a SHE. God is man, woman, genderless Brahman in Hinduism alone.
So if you look at that angle you will enjoy the poem.

My boss in the BBC Tamilosai Shankar Anna,corrected my script one day. I translated the BBC English script verbatim hairbreadth= mayir izaiyil, but he told me Thambi, ellaaam nallaa irukku ,aanaal antha mayir enpathai nuul izaiyil enRu maatrinaal innum naallaa irukkum allavaa?

From that day I realised that inauspicious words must be avoided in the broadcasting medium.
So I could have changed the heading completely like --Novel Poem on Lord Shiva..... etc.
I will keep it in mind for future posts.

'பித்தன் என்றாலும் அவன் பேயன் என்றாலும்
சித்தம் எல்லாம் அவன் பால் செல்லுதம்மா'

என்று ஒரு பாடலின் பல்லவி!

'தந்தை தாய் இருந்தால் இவ்வுலகத்தின் உமக்கிந்த
தாழ்வெல்லாம் வருமோ ஐயா'

என்பது இன்னொரு பாடலின் பல்லவி

சிவபெருமானை 'வஞ்சப் புகழ்ச்சி' செய்து பாடும் பாடல்களே இது போன்றவை!

சிவனுக்கு எத்தனை கண்? இது தெரியாதா? மூன்று கண் என்று உடனே பதில் சொல்பவர்கள் சற்றே மன்னிக்க வேண்டும்.

கவி காளமேகத்தின் கணக்குப்படி சிவனுக்கு உள்ளது அரைக் கண் தானாம்.எப்படி? காளமேகம் சொல்கிறார். சிவனின்

உடலில் சரி பாதி உமையம்மை பிடித்துக் கொண்டிருக்கிறாள். எனவே மூன்றில் பாதி ஒன்றரைக் கண் உமையுடையது.

மீதி உள்ளதிலாவது சிவனுக்கு உரிமை உண்டா? இல்லை!! அதிலும் ஒரு கண் கண்ணப்பனுடையது. மீதி அரைக் கண் தான்

சிவனுககுச் சொந்தமானது என்று வாதிடுகிறார் அவர்.

"முக்கண்ணன் என்றரனை முன்னோர் மொழிந்திடுவர்
அக்கண்ணற் குள்ளது அரைக்கண்ணே-மிக்க
உமையாள்கண் ஒன்றரைமற் றூன்வேடன் கண்ணொன்று
அமையும் இதனாலென்று அறி."

காளமேகமாவது நகைச்சுவைப் புலவர் என்று பேர் வாங்கியவர். அப்பரடிகள் இருக்கிறாரே! அவர் இளமையில் சமணத்தில்

இருந்து முதுமை வந்தபின் சைவத்தைச் சரணடைந்தவர். அவரது பாடல்களில் தன் பழைய வாழ்க்கை பற்றிய

கழிவிரக்கமும் சிவபெருமானின் பெருமைகளும் தான் காணப்படும். அவர் கூட சிவனின் மூன்று கண்களை வைத்துக்

கொண்டு கிண்டல் செய்கிறார்.

"இன்றரைக் கண்ணுடை யாரெங்கு மில்லை யிமயமென்னும்
குன்றரைக் கண்ணன் குலமகட் பாவைக்குக் கூறிட்ட நா-
ளன்றரைக் கண்ணுங் கொடுத்துமை யாளையும் பாகம்வைத்த
ஒன்றரைக் கண்ணன்கண் டீரொற்றி யூருறை யுத்தமனே." (தேவாரம் 4-86-7)

உலகத்தில் எல்லோருக்கும் இரண்டு கண் தான் உண்டு. சில பேர் ஒரு கண் பார்வையை இழந்தவர்களாக இருந்தால்

அவர்களை ஒற்றைக் கண்ணன் என்று சொல்வார்கள். ஆனால் ஒரு கண்ணும் இல்லாமல் இரண்டு கண்ணும் இல்லாமல்

ஒன்றரைக் கண் உடையவர்களைப் பற்றிக் கேள்விப் பட்டிருக்கிறீர்களா? இதோ இருக்கிறார் பாருங்கள். அவருக்கு முதலில்

மூன்று கண் தான் இருந்தது. இமயமலையின் அரசனான இமவானின் மகளை மணந்து கொண்டபோது தன் உடம்பில்

பாதியை உமா தேவிக்குக் கொடுத்து விட்டார். அதனால் சிவனுக்கு ஒன்றரைக் கண் தான் மிச்சம் என்கிறார்

நாவுக்கரசர்.அண்மைக் காலப் புலவரான கோபால கிருஷ்ண பாரதி பாடுகிறார்,


பாவம் சிவன். இந்தப் புலவர்கள் வாயில் அகப்பட்டுக் கிண்டலுக்கு ஆளாகி, தன் அரைக் கண்ணைக் கசக்கிக் கொண்டு நிற்கிறார்.

காலின் செருப்பால் ஒரு வேடன் எதிர்த்து உதைக்க
வில்லினால் ஒருவன் வந்தடிக்க
உமது திருமேனி என்னமாய் நொந்ததோ

கூசாமல் இடைவன் கைக்கோடாரியால் வெட்ட
கூட்டத்தில் ஒருவன் பித்தா பேயா எனத் திட்ட
வீசி மதுரை மாறன் பிரம்பால் அடிக்க
அந்த வேளை யாரை நினைந்தீரோ ஐயா

சீலமில்லாதொரு பெண் காரியுமிழலாச்சே
சேர்ந்தவளும் தலைமீதேற எளிதாய்ப் போச்சே
பாலகிருஷ்ணன் இதைப் பார்க்கும்படியாச்சே
பாருலகில் எங்கணும் பார்க்கில் இதுவே பேச்சே

அருமையான பாடல்கள், அருமையான படம். சிவராத்ரி அன்று படிப்போருக்கு புண்ணியம் உண்டு. முன்பு சொன்னது போல உலகில் இந்து மதம் ஒன்றில்தான் இந்த சுதந்திரம் ,உரிமை உண்டு. அதை ஒரு வரம்புக்குள் பயன்படுத்துவோமாக. கடவுளை வாடா போடா என்று ஏகவசனத்தில் அழைப்பதும் யார் கொலோ சதுரர்? (நீ கெட்டிக்கரரனா, நான் கெட்டிக்காரனா?=மாணிக்கவாசகர்) என்று நக்கல் பேசுவதும் நமக்கேயுள்ள ஏகபோக உரிமை. ஆனால் உள்ளுக்குள் ' பால் நினைந்தூட்டும் தாயினும் சாலப் பரிந்து ' என்றும் 'அன்பினில் விளைந்த ஆரமுதே' என்றும் மனதார பாராட்டுவோம்.ஓம் நமசிவாய.
