This is on expected lines...DMK tried to whip anti Brahmin feelings in 2006 by bringing in the communal GO under the garb of equality saying that qualification and training matters & not heredity...

Appoint priests as per 'Agama Sastra': Supreme Court

The Supreme Court on Wednesday said that restrictions in 'Agama sastras' does not violate right to equality enshrined in Article 14 of the Constitution.
A bench led by Justice Ranjan Gogoi said appointment of archakas in temples following 'Agama Sastra' — rituals of individual temples concerned — will continue.
In 1971, the then DMK government under Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi amended the Tamil Nadu Hindu Religious Endowments Act to abolish the concept of hereditary appointments for priests (archakas) in temples in the State. The amendment was challenged in the Supreme Court, which took the side of the government.
In its judgment in the Seshammal case, a Constitution bench of the apex court held that appointment of Archakas was a “secular function” and abolished “next-in-line succession” appointments. However, the court also made it clear that appointments so made, even if they are non-hereditary, should conform to the “usage” prevalent in the said temple. If the “usage” was that Archakas were appointed from a given “denomination, sect or group”, this had to be followed.
Critics said this translated into priest appointments again getting restricted to the community of Brahmins for several subsequent decades. A committee formed by the State government, in fact, said the Seshammal case had been misunderstood.
In May 2006, the DMK government took up the issue of priests appointments yet again. Relying on a 2002 judgement in the Adhithayan case, where the apex court held that there was no justification for insisting that persons of a particular caste alone could conduct temple rituals, the State issued a GO making any person with “requisite qualification and training” eligible for appointment.
The GO and the ordinance that followed were challenged by the Adi Saiva Sivacharyargal Nala Sangam.

The following is a FB post from a noted Tamil Scholar Arumugam Kr on this subject and I producing it as it is .

Couple of factual and historical inconsistencies. Ramanujar did not change Agama vidhi, he left it as it was. Had he got his way, Thirumala would follow Pancharathra just like Srirangam, but that is not the case. Even within Kanchipuram, Varadaraja temple follows Pancharathra whereas Thoopul(Vilakoli or Deepaprakasar Temple to where Varadar goes in Vahanam on Brahmotsavam days). Ramanujar lived a significant portion of his life in Srirangam and Kanchipuram, he did not play around with Agaama and he left it as it was. This propaganda that Ramanujar changed Agama is blatant lie and based on perverted notions of social justice.
Honestly people without any Sanskrit proficiency interpreting Sruthis and Samhitas is bound to have lot of errors simply from a language proficiency perspective.

Pl read this ...Out of 36000 temples only 6000 have Brahmins are Priests..Not in the rest...Why target the 15%

IF anyone had watched Thanthi TV Azutha Ezuthu debate, Prasanna from DK vocally told temple sothu and sanctum sanctorum alone matters. Many people wrongly think that priests take Hundial money. In HRCE controlled temples, all the ticket sales, archana ticket, Ubhayam from important festival and occasion contributions like Abishekam, special poojai etc. all goto HRCE directly. In addition, there are cameras fitted inside temples to see if anyone is bribing the Bhattars to get special concessions.

Many people wrongly think that by studying something for 3 years, one can become priest. That is not the purpose. Dayanand Saraswati, a famous reformist Hindu openly told that he welcomes such ideas but the purpose and attitude "Must not try to denigrate or vilify a particular sect". DK precisely does that. The motive is not service or Kainkaryam, it is just to defile and create serious issues within temple. For a simple alankaram, a course cannot teach you how to do it. One needs to be a devotee first and then only a priest. This 2006 archakar training school gave an impression to gullible NB youths to think that "you can sit, shake mani, say some namaha and make $$$". This is not the case with archakars. During Brahmotsavam times, priest work 24x 7 in shift fashion, simply because the workload is immense. Also, even in Archakars house, the individual discipline, Dos-Donts are followed. One cannot expect some training school to impart such discipline which comes as default in priestly families. Imagine what can happen when we have tons of gold (rare and old and exquisite) , a simple accident such as loss of a toe ring for example, can create huge commotion . Courts will intervene and take control of temple gold also . Not that Brahmin priests are flawless, but none has heard stories about gold thefts in Padal petra sthalams (Nayanmar and Azhwar glorified temples).

DK thinks by becoming a priest, one will have control and access to temple land , gold and share of pie in temple revenues. This is not the case. Priests are paid pittance, even in rich temples. The only benefits they have are free housing (the very least cheap rent) and food.

What I propose is very simple:
1. Make Padal petra sthalams completely exempt from such haphazard, social justice lab experiments. This will make 100-150 odd temples (Shaivite and Vaishnavite) free from such DK skullduggery and these are the temples that usually see good crowds
2. Encourage rich NBs to help their fellow community members , build temple and make them priests
3. On a pilot basis, make NB priest first assist B priests in rural TN temples which have hard time in even lighting lamps.
4. If NB priests like the job out of devotion and passion for service, make them the next in line priests
5. Finally think of getting access to hereditary priest nominated temples like Srirangam, Chidamabram etc.
