Justice P. Sadasivam, New Governor of Kerala:

Appointment of retired CJI, Justice P. Sadasivam as Governor of Kerala has generated heated debate among the political and legal circles. But appointment of Governors of persons holding Constitutional post after retirement is not new in our country. I give below a short list of persons whom I could remember in this regard. One retired CEC got a Minister's post in central cabinet after retirement.

Justice Fatima Beevi, Governor of Tamil Nadu.
Justice Rama Jois, Governor of Bihar and Jharkhand
Mr.T N Chaturvedi, Retired CAG, Governor of Karnataka.
Dr M S Gill, Retired CEC of India, Minister in Central Government.

Apart from this, a number of retired bureaucrats and politicians got the post of Governor after retirement. The list of persons in this category is long.

The post of Governor of a State is a Constitutional Post, but there are no norms for its selection have been given in our Constitution except that (Art 153 to 156) " He should be a Citizen of India, be at least thirty-five (35)years old, not be a member of the either house of the parliament or house of the state legislature, and not hold any other office of profit." Further "The term of governor's office is normally 5 years but it can be terminated earlier by Dismissal by the president on the advice of the prime minister of the country, at whose pleasure the governor holds office or Resignation by the governor."

Shri Sathasivam has an illustrious career, is a legal luminary and a nationalist to the core! He is the best choice for the post of Governor! Appreciate this!

And a funny argument in pudiya talaimurai by a panelist. This a big come down for sadasivam, as the CJI he had the power to administer oath for the president, and Noe he is under the mercy of the president.
No one has given a rational reason except that perhaps there is no precedent!

Appointing retired judges as governors is not a good thing since after all judges are also human beings who are likely to be partial in delivering judgement while in service especially in cases involving Government. The lure of post retirement bonanza which the Government may offer will surely will blur their legal vision.
btw; What is the need of having Governors? Raj Bhavans have become a place to keep the following type of people.

A) Retired babus who were close to the netas of ruling party.

B) Trouble creating Netas belonging to the ruling class who can not be accommodated elsewhere

C) Loyal party leader who can give enough pin pricks to the Chief Minister of the State Government where the opposition party is in power.

D) Person of choice of the Prime Minister and the powerful Party President by their own sweet will and pleasure as a reward.

hi

there are many elected celebraties in the rajya sabha are doing nothing...just namesake...now a days..governors are playing with

party/political supporters..its a bad sign for democracy...

Justice P. Sadasivam belongs to an agriculturist family, from Bhavani. He is the second person to be appointed as Governor from Tamil Nadu in recent times. The other one is Mr E.S.L. Narasimhan, Governor of Andhra Pradesh. Whereas UPA Government was liberal in appointing persons from small state of Kerala like Mr M K Narayanan ( West Bengal) Mr. K. Sankaranarayanan (Maharashtra -Second Term) and Mr. Vakkom Purushothaman ( Mizoram).

Apart from this UPA has given important posts to members from Kerala in Parliament like Mr P J Kurian - Dr. Chairman, Rajya Sabha and Mr. K.V.Thomas - Chairman PAC.
Dr Manmohan Singh's Cabinet had eight persons from Kerala.
