Whatever said and done...no matter how ill a person is esp if its our own mother or father...we should take looking after them as our duty to help out and not think of mercy killing.

When a person is bed ridden and helpless the person themselves suffer both physically and mentally..so we have to be patient.

I remember both my paternal grandparents were bed ridden for sometime before passing away cos both got a stroke in the same month and my younger uncle took care of both of them till they passed on.

He never complained..he said..when a baby is small... parents clean them up when they soil themselves so why cant a child do the same for their parents.

The concerned person forcibly throws the diaper away! Then what can they do?

Then the doctor can prescribe some mood stabilizer for some parts of the day....the person here seems to display neuro-psychiatric symptoms. Dementia too could be a culprit.

Renukaji,
Do they not know that there are professional called "psychiatrist", who may help in diagnosis and treatment of mental health? May be a reminder from a doctor is needed.

We talked to Dr. Bruce Shapiro, Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Columbia University of Physicians and Surgeons, about how mental illness gets diagnosed in seniors since the erratic behavior, confusion and memory loss symptoms are similar to those found with dementia. “These are very serious issues in seniors and it is often overlooked that the rate of suicide is higher in the senior years than in any other age group,” explains Dr. Shapiro. “The psychologist attempts to clarify whether there are symptoms of psychosis, dementia, anxiety, depression or bipolar disorder. In reviewing these areas it is often helpful for the psychologist to speak with involved family members who may have observations of difficulties that the individual does not see. In this way, along with a thorough mental status examination and possible psychological testing, and careful review of history, current symptoms and other factors impacting the elderly individual, will lead the psychologist to a diagnosis which will form the basis for treatment.”

Dear Renu,

There are are differences between taking care of kids and elders.

1. The parents are young when kids are born and they have good energy. But children of super seniors are seniors!

2. Cleaning up the kids will be only for a couple of years but bed ridden patients suffer for many years.
Hence we need some helping hand to take care of super seniors. :help:

One very active person in our neighbourhood had dementia at the age of 75.

He was tied to a chair and kept as a prisoner and it was a very pathetic sight. :pout:

You are right, but it costs money, and lot of it. So it is economics too.

My doctor brother is very much concerned about the geriatric care in India. He wishes the government to take some steps

to establish some hospitals at lower cost. He introduced a doctor from Kerala, who runs a hospital in which geriatric care is

cost effective! No heroic treatments given but the patients are kept pain free. :thumb:

That is very humane indeed.

Actually, education, medical care and insurance should be taken care by the government for all citizens... that is the sign of a healthy system and of a developed country.
