Are Probiotics the New Prozac?

Probiotics, the healthy bacteria in yogurt and certain fermented foods, may be mind-altering microbes that could be used to help treat depression and anxiety, according to cutting-edge new research.

A new “proof of concept” study using functional MRI offers the first evidence that bacteria consumed in food can affect human brain function, UCLA researchers report. The study found that women who eat probiotic yogurt regularly had altered activity in brain regions that regulate emotions and internal body sensations.

For example, during an emotional reactivity test involving viewing pictures of angry or frightened faces, the women who had consumed probiotics twice a day for a month showed decreased activity in these regions. This is an indication of reduced anxiety, according to neuropsychiatrist Daniel Amen, MD, a brain imaging specialist who was not involved in the research.

Conversely, women who didn’t consume probiotics had stable or increased activity in these regions during the emotional reactivity test. The study, which included 36 women, was published in the peer-reviewed journal Gastroenterology.
Can Probiotics Make People Happier?

"Our findings indicate that some of the contents of yogurt may actually change the way our brain responds to the environment,” Dr. Kirsten Tillisch, associate professor of medicine at UCLA's David Geffen School of Medicine and lead author of the study, said in a statement.

“When we consider the implications of this work, the old sayings 'you are what you eat' and 'gut feelings' take on new meaning,” added Dr. Tillsch.

Superfoods With Healing Powers

A psychology researcher at University of Canterbury in New Zealand is so enthusiastic about the potential of probiotics to improve mood that she has launched a new study in which 80 patients with depression will receive probiotic supplements for four months.

“I hope my study will find that treatment with probiotics changes levels of certain substances in the blood and brain, essentially making people happier,” researcher Amy Romijn told 3 News.

I find it hard to believe this study..majority of Indians eat yogurt/curds and have a mega dose of Probiotics but I wonder how happy they are in real life??

Mostly everyone is unhappy of something or the other...always anxious from day one of life..marriage and even worrying for male child..worrying for who will do Shraddha after death..list of worries go on.

Well...again..this study is a western study..results could differ from Indians...for all we know the Probiotics in the Indian(PIO included) gut could be "suffering" from depression!LOL

Dear Renu,

I think curd only makes the people at least be happy with a few blessings they get in life.

Without curd.......... What will happen?

LOL!

But out here there are races that do not consume milk/curds at all but they are always happy and happy go lucky and less anxious than us Indians.

I think it is our Indian mindset...we strive for perfection before even attempting anything but other races take a day at a time.

Smt. Renuka,

Even in India, I am sure that a large percentage does not include 'curds' in their daily food intake. Most nairs and muslims of Kerala are sure examples AFAIK. Similarly many of the brahmins and Jains in Kanpur, Mathura etc., don't consume curds at all on daily basis. The Assamese also.

But all across these people the "happy go lucky" attitude to life is not very much there.

In my lifetime I have found only the pre-merger goan christians and Punjabis to be really jolly and happy go lucky in their attitude. But Punjabis drink lots of Lassi; so could the study be true, after all?

There is evidence that people who use fermented milk are longer-living even at the world level, I read somewhere. So, may be we will both continue to make posts here in tbf for another 100 years more, OK?!!

May be 'More the merrier' means Tamil 'more' (மோர்) also? :D

What races, non-milk-curd consuming, are always happy? A pointer to where they are, what they do, and what they eat will be of immense benefit to us generally happy-go-lucky indians.

'Us indians' refers to what percentage of indian indians, pios, and indian citizens living abroad? I think the sweep is too broad and all encompassing.

tayir sadam is available in most of the restaurants, 5 star hotels, kaiendi bavans, temple prasadam stalls, and newly started janata canteens of tamilnadu. It is filling and cheap and, it seems, getting kudos from foreign researchers. There is another study which claims the superiority of plain yogurt over spiked ones - fruit, vannila etc.

Coming to curd, my dinner is not complete without a sprinking of Thair sadam with either Avakkai or Vadu mangai

In Dubai I like the Labneh...Tasty & healthy

LOL! Defensive?

Cool yaar..I am also Indian by origin.

I was trying to convey is I have seen races that do not drink even milk but very contented with life and take one day at a time and do not blame God for anything.

They also do not strive for perfection like most of us who have Indian DNA try to make things too prefect even before we start on anything...for example we check time, date, horoscope match hoping for the best..that is a sign of anxiety actually...and all of us with Indian DNA (including me) are guilty of this to a certain extent.

I have a relative whose 1st marriage with perfect horoscope match arranged marriage failed but for 2nd marriage they still are looking for perfect match horoscope again....my advise to that person was why care so much for a perfect score when the 1st score which was good itself failed??
So leave it to God and make your own life instead of relying on horoscope.

Some other races just live by that day leaving everything to God and have in their mind 'Yaha Kal Kya Ho Kisne Jana" feeling and be happy for the moment.

Over the years I have started to think like this too..something I picked up from some Non Milk Drinking races.

So Sarang ji..dont get so defensive yaar...none of us are the gate keepers for Indians of the Universe.

Sir, are you in Dubai? Or you just visit Dubai frequently?

I too love Labneh.

In our home too my dinner is not complete with out thayir saadham. If Sambar or Kozhambu or Paruppu (Keerai Paruppu/Vellerikkai Paruppu/Maangai Paruppu/Thakkali Parappu) that my mum makes happen to be extraordinarily tasty, I would rather give no space in my stomach for Thayir Saadham and would simply eat only Thayir at the end or drink "neer more" added with Black Salt.

The people out there that don't consume milk/curds possibly consume liquor/arak/ganja/tongat ali and that's why they are happy :D

I am not sure whether curd makes people happy or not. But it does good to the revival of kidney function!

Ram's cousin (periammA's son) Dr. Ranganathan, a scientist based in Philly, has a research lab and found out

a new drug based on the microbes present in curd! This product is sold as a dietary supplement world wide!
