It differs from Gothram to Gothram.

This is just a Bramin traditional style of introducing oneself that is in practice while seeking blessings from elders.

The reason for this exclusion is - Girls being gaining two different Gothram identity [One from her father before marriage & another from husband after marriage], were denied from this due to un-uniformity.

Why are there no female rishees in the abivadaye?

The Dharmashastras, part of Smirti, were quite ancient and based on the Vedas itself. The only difference is they were man made by the Rishis based on their understanding of the Vedas.

The Dharmashastras were codified by 18 Maharishis. They were Manu, Parashara, Yagnavalkya, Goutama, Haaritha, Yaman, Vishnu, Sankar, Likithar, Brihaspathi, Dakshan, Angiras, Prachethar, Samvarthar, Achanas, Athri, Apastambhar and Saathathapar.

One has to keep both the hands on the ears and tell "ABHIVADHAYE, bending oneself before doing "SHAASTANGHA NAMASKARAM".

This is a kinda exercise equivalent to that of dhorbi-karanam, which we do in front of Shri Ganesa. The prostrate posture provides us to withstand in any situation as it shatters our ego..

I have stated the same in my Post: The reason for this exclusion is - Girls being gaining two different Gothram identity [One from her father before marriage & another from husband after marriage], were denied from this due to un-uniformity.

It was your post that I had quoted..i had written a reply but i deleted it and could not delete the entire reply as the delete option was not there.

Actually this 2 different gotra for a female, somehow it seems a bit strange.
In a marriage there is union of both masculine and femine energy..so a male too will get some part of the feminine energy from his wife and so would the female get masculine energy from her husband.
The ardhanareshwara concept appears clear..that the left half of a man is his wife and the right half of a woman is her husband.
Some changes is taking place at a subtle level when two people marry.
Some married couples start to look very alike as they age.
There is an exchange of some form of energy..so its strange that only the Gotra of a male remains intact and the Gotra of a female is subject to change.

In matrilineal societies the concept of Gotra is totally absent.
Anyway, I might be wrong.

Men's gotra determines lineage. When women are married, they are accepted into the clan/lineage of the husband.

Men's gotra determines lineage.

There are proper Mantras recited from Bride and Bridegroom Vada Pandits to Change the Gothra of the Bride.

This Subject was discussed in this Form Long back in the year 2006.

Pravara is a ritual of changing the bride's and groom's Gotrams (clan) from both families !!

It is arising from beliefs of a society steeped in patriarchy. Not clear when it became so. In Mahabharata Arjuna was called Kountheya
Rama was known by his mother’s name. This was not just father focused society. Sita is described to have had upanayanam

Society changed not always for the best are glorified by calling it a tradition

We have discussed Gotheram several times.

In the court case "Madhavrao vs Raghavendrarao" which involved a Deshastha Brahmin couple, the German scholar Max Mueller's definition of gotra as descending from eight sages and then branching out to several families was thrown out by reputed judges of Bombay High Court. The court called the idea of Brahmin families descending from an unbroken line of common ancestors as indicated by the names of their respective gotras "impossible to accept." The court consulted relevant Hindu texts and stressed the need for Hindu society and law to keep up with the times, emphasizing that notions of good social behavior and the general ideology of the Hindu society had changed. The court also said that the mass of material in the Hindu texts is so vast and full of contradictions that it is almost an impossible task to reduce it to order and coherence.

I met a Panjabi Jat in Jalandhar temple who also had Kaundinya Gotheram. If Gotheram is by lineage then how can it cross the Caste barrier?

At one time, Gotheram might have been identified as an alumnus of a school run by a Rishi. Subsequently, they might have branched out, just as IIT alums can be found worldwide.

Part of maturing is to recognize gotra, race, creed , gender , gender orientation , caste to name a few are meaningless imagination. Ideas of Gotra could be sanctioned superimposition to a student to live up to some ideals. Carrying all these as real past some age is sign of immaturity.

Mr PJ - you said in another thread to be more spiritual by posting such topics. Why not by declaring to yourself for starters that you are a human being without any other identity. That is the basic prerequisites for spiritual sense to blossom

Am i to proclaim that i am a Human Being ? Not Necessary.. Please give your valuable comments about my posts.

It is about the message of the post only. Proclaiming only as a human being means giving up all other false identities. That is spiritual maturity. Not my view. That is the teaching of what is labelled as ‘neti neti’.

It was a figure of speech. Keep all your cherished identities.

Abhivadaye is a better identity for brahmins than Gayatri as some people had thought. Gayatri is now a public property, as there are many audios on chanting it. Even some non-brahmins use it as a daily practice. This is the reason for considering it as a better identity for brahmins.

Dear Sir,
The Gayatri mantra is not public property and its not the identity of anyone either.

The Gayatri mantra is like the Sun through which we all are able to exists in the solar system.
Hence the Tat Savitur Varenyam.
Savita meaning " that from which all of this is born"

We humans cant claim ownership to the 5 elements itself.
The 5 elements are not public property either.
We all breathe in oxygen yet oxygen isnt public property nor the identity of anyone.

So just imagine the Gayatri mantra which talks about Savita..the source of everything and it even preceeds the 5 elements..so how can it be public property?

The caste identities are harmful and it is a pure imagination of the mind.

Cultural practices can have an identity but such practices are constantly evolving.

The upanayanam contrary to its intended significance has just become an opportunity for taking photos. The essence of ceremony in its vast meaning is such that it is really applicable to all regardless of birth or gender provided they are committed to life of learning about truth of oneself regardless of the profession.

Brahmin caste identity is not serving the community well. For one most in this so called community are steeped in ignorance. Second, like most human beings they are trying to ape the west for all wrong things instead of learning from them where it matters.

Then there are nefarious forces that are trying to attack Hinduism which is only an umbrella term and they do this by attacking the so called Brahmin identity.

The confused and recent converts to another religion are the most mentally violent spewing hatred towards so called Brahmins.

That leaves those carrying Brahmin caste tag to fight which they are incapable of doing. Flight to other countries alone is the other option in a traditional sense.

There is a third option. Let the identity be - I am a human being hailing from this town and my father’s name is so and so. This can be codified in Sanskrit. Embrace the spirit of what PM advocates ‘ vasudhauva kutumbakam’. This does not mean one has to be ok with nefarious elements doing adharmic deeds attacking Hinduism. But we can recognize the person being different from their acts. Such an identity will be more in alignment with Brahmin definition in Gita

Let us try to understand profound meaning of Gayatri mantra. It is universal and applicable to all including aliens in the universe
