In1974 Arthur C. Clarke told the ABC that every household in 2001 will have a computer and be connected all over the world.

Yonathan Zunger writes: A very short interview Arthur C. Clarke gave in 1974, where he predicted the world of 2001: "when he grows up... he will have in his own house, not a computer as big as this, but at least a console through which he can talk to his friendly local computer and get all the info he needs for his everyday life: his bank statements, his theater reservations, all the information you need over the course of living in a complex modern society." He goes on to talk about the possibilities of telecommuting, instant global communication, and so on. Clarke's ability to understand the consequences of computers was really extraordinary, in an era where even most science fiction writers didn't really get it.
