I am a tamil Brahmin and I want to know the how to look into what the ancestores call "jadhagam". I wish to learn it. Is it possible to learn it without a guru. Also is there any source available which acts as the complete guide- either books or websites.?

Shri Tatnur,

I will recommend the books written by Shri B.V. Raman on different aspects of hindu astrology. His books are in simple English. To understand these books and to learn the mathematical calculations part, there is no need for a guru if you have basic knowledge of astronomy and mathematics, imo.

But to learn the prediction aspect/s of astrology, I will say that simple bookish knowledge is not sufficient. If you can get an astrologer who is sincere and not after earning money and fame and can learn from him, you will be very lucky person, I will say. In case you have some doubts, there are many members here who know astrology and perhaps they will clarify through this forum also, I believe.

GOTHRA COMPATIBILITY IN ASTROLOGY

Friends,
I am giving, herein, GOTHRA compatibility as per Astrology:

All the constellations are divided into MAREECHI GOTHRA, VASISHTA GOTHRA
ANGEERAS GOTHRA, ATHRI GOTHRA, PULASTHYA GOTHRA, PULAHA GOTHRA
AND KREETHU GOTHRA ( 7 GOTHRAS) .

ASWINI, PUSHYA, SWATHI, AND ABHIJITH WHICH IS EXINCT NOW are said to be in MAREECHI GOTHRA.(அச்வதி, பூயம், ஸ்வாதி, *அபிஜித் ( *இப்பொழுது இல்லை )

BHARANI, ASLESHA, VISAKHA, SRAVANA are said to be in VASISHTA GOTHRA ( பரணி, ஆயில்யம், விசாகம், திருஒணம்

KRITHTHIKA, MAKHA, ANURAADHA, and DHANISHTA or SRAVISHTA are said to be in ANGEERAS GOTHRA ( கார்த்திகை, மகம், அனுஷம், அவிட்டம்

ROHINI, PURVA PHALGUNI, JYESHTA, SHATHABHISHAK are said to be in ATHRI GOTHRA ( ரோஹிணி, பூரம், கேட்டை, சதயம்

MRUGASHIRA, UTHARA PHALGUNI, MOOLA, POORVABHAADRA (POORVAPROSHTAPADA) are said to be in PULASTHYA GOTHRA ( மகீரம், உத்திரம், மூலம், பூரட்டாதி

AARDRA, HASTHA, POORVAASHAADA, UTHRA BHAADRA (UTHARA POROSHTAPADA) are said to be in PULAHA GOTHRA (திருவாதிரை, அத்தம், பூராடம், உத்திரட்டாதி.

PUNARVASU, CHITHRA, UTHRAASHAADA, REVATHI are said to be in KREETHU GOTHRA ( புனர்பூசம், சித்திரை, உத்றாடம், ரேவதி.

The constellations which are from the same GOTHRA are not compatible. This is entirely different from what Brahmins say.

I have learned computational aspects of astrology. It is purely astro-mathematics, absolutely scientific. But when it comes to predictive aspects, I am very doubtful if it can be done by just pure reasoning. It is more intuitive. Thus it falls into the category of mysticism. After a great study, I would recommend that individuals can abstain from astrology and take up mind development books and literature.
Astrology may be true. But astrologers invariably lack the competence required for interpretation and hence it is better to avoid astrologers.

Astrology is a science and also called shastra. Shastras have great connection with science. It is better to learn astrology with the help of a Guru .

Dear Sri. TATNUR,

SHAASTRA means Science. It is better to have a GURU initially. Afterwards you can study yourself. This is my considered view. However remember, this is a very vast subject.. I do not find any end to my ANWESHANA(अन्वेषण)

I am learning astrology, although I am not a newcomer to astrology since my father was a good astrologer, and in addition a family friend was a major scholar in astrology. When I was growing up I learnt many of the basics of astrology.

After a long hiatus, I am back to learning and thinking about astrology. I would strongly recommend to you the book: "Light on Life: An introduction to astrology of India" by Hart Defouw & Robert Svoboda.

The book is available from Amazon.com. From what I have read and heard, it takes a long period of learning and practicing before one can become very good at astrology. I mean "truly good" where your odds of making reasonably reliable predictions is high.

This has nothing to do with the discipline itself. It is just that there is an ocean of little details that one has to pay attention to, that it can become overwhelming list of details and experienced astrologers know which one to weight heavily and what can be ignored comfortably. Learning that seems to come only with practice. There are many good websites that contain discussions on astrology moderated by experienced astrologers. The

Good luck to you on your quest. For one who takes it seriously, and is willing to "enjoy the journey of learning" as well as the goal "unlocking the secrets of the future" for an individual armed only with four pages worth of information that can be derived from date, place, time of birth, it truly is fascinating.

Best wishes for your enjoyment of such a journey.
