SUB: BHARAT RATNA AWARD
Today's Hindu carried a message that Sports Ministry
recommended the name of former Hockey wizard
Dhyan Chand for Bharat Ratna Award.
Sometime back, the Maharashtra Govt. had been crying
for this award to Sachin Tendulkar. Since Sachin's
performance during the last few years
has not been noteworthy, the tone has come down.
I am extremely sorry to say that no one from Tamil
Nadu has spoken in favour of the Chess Master
Viswanathan Anand for Bharat Ratna Award. Despite
the fact that he has been achieving so much in Chess
continuously, either the Tamil Nadu Government or the
concerned Chess Association in Tamil Nadu has spoken
in favour of him. This has shown the indifferent attitude
of our people.
Chess is an individual sport and it has been playing in
more than 150 countries around the world.
Though India dominated Hockey during Dhyan Chand
period, many European countries, New Zealand,
Australia etc. were not playing seriously. Once they
started playing seriously, the sub continent
teams India and Pakistan are pushed down.
In the case of Cricket, the game is being played by
only handful of countries.
While I am not against Dhyan Chand getting this
Award, I think Viswanathan Anand deserves more than
these two.
I request the members to put pressure on Tamil Nadu
Government and concerned Chess Association for
recommending his name for Bharat Ratna Award.
