The RTOs and MV inspectors are very active in Bangalore. Vehicles with non Karnataka Registration (KA) are caught by the officials of Road Transport department for payment of Life Time Tax (LTT) if the vehicles stay more than 30 days in Karnataka, as per the amended Rules. This has created a difficult situation for the vehicle owners who visit for a short duration. As per the news item carried by "The New Indian Express", today, a group of Vehicle owners have approached Supreme Court for their intervention. For full news please open the following link:

Non-state Car Owners Go to SC Over Tax Trouble - The New Indian Express

It was one year before. The process of re registration is complicated and expensive. For new registration, a no objection certificate (the vehicle is not involved in any case, no dues are pending) from the old city RTO, full tax is to paid at the new city, and an application for refund to be applied and chased from the old city.

Valid case for nitin gadkari to simplify the process as all records are computerised. Gadkari has announced that he is simplifying many RTO procedures, Hope this is included.

Yes, the process of Re-registration is a cumbersome affair. I had the experience of changing a PY (Pondicherry) registration to KA (Karnataka). The RTO was very courteous and asked me to note down the documents required. He told me the PY registration is not viewed without doubt by the Transport Authorities in India. Then I found that to get no objection Certificate from Pondicherry was equally difficult. Using all my influence I got the "No Objection letter" from Pondicherry, which clearly stated that there is no rule to issue NOC under MV Act, how ever confirmed there is no tax dues on the vehicle.

Now it is time that Central Government should amend the MV Act more people friendly and make it applicable all India.

Just imagine if each State make rules for collection of tax, then the old "license Permit Raj" will return to harass the honest citizen.

Original intent was to prevent stolen vehicles from being sold and registered in another state. That happens despite such blocks, but genuine cases, 99%, suffer.

It is illegal but i drove my TN bike for 4 years in KA. 2 in Bangalore and 2 in mysore. As long as you adhere to the rules - wearing helmet, traffic rules and non drunken driving, you are good. I was stopped many times for random drunken driving check, but not for riding a TN registration bike. I just paid life time tax in KA also though. Did not go through the re registration proces.
