I never had easy time signing up for a cell phone and they become inactive if they are not connected to network in India in a 3 month period. Signing up during each visit a new one number for PIO/OCI without a permanent address in India is not easy.

Recently when I was in Japan on business I was able to get a cell phone for use from the airport and could return it in many locations at the end of my visit.

I must be missing something in terms of information.

Do people know what is the best way to get a cell number in India and keep it for many years.

My SIM card was deactivated during my last trip to the U S of A. But my smart sister gave me her cell phone to make at least one call

per month and kept the card alive till she returned after six months! Ram's b i l, who is living in West Virginia, gives his cell phone to his

friend in our village, to keep the card alive. But, one of my cousins is the smartest of the lot. He gets a cell phone from one of his friends

to use while he is in India!!

That is exactly what we do. But I get new number. I think TKSji wanted to keep the same number.
