Changing face of chennai

A few different experiences this time in chennai after the new year.

Checked into a different hotel in the heart of town -a newly built one .

the wifi in hotel blocked access to a well known matrimonial website very popular with brahmins saying it is a

dating website .lol.

arebrahmin boys and girls using portals to fix a Date.

Wanted to fix a date for an event in the family involving a religeous ceremony.

After websites failed give me satisfactory dates, I contacted an astrologer-palmist. Ugh what a killing

combination of professions.

This person wearing caste signs and seated in an leather chair behind a table in a room full of God pictures

looking like the gurus in indian films received me and motioned me to be seated. I got ticked

off for asking for a date falling on sundays
He gave me choice of dates on friday one each in feb and march talking of valar perai, natchatram .He felt

I was compromising his profession and religion by my desire to save work manhours of all involved.

pressures of modern

living do not provide for luxury of choosing working day for religeous activities IMHO

whenmy wife wanted to show her hands for reading and predicton , he refused saying that it should not be

read after 12 noon.lol

These days everybody sets terms - even the astrologers acting like gods special representatives.

there is no happiness in faces of people after the month of rains. most feel bad for the children who are

pressured in schools with extra classes and losses in furniture due to rains.

Food prices in hotels has crashed. Still no takers out of fearI suppose

auto fellows are in rampage .no observance of meters anywhere.

prepaiddoes not open early , autos and cars are hounding people with wild rates at the railway station

so back toold times in this regard

True , the non stop rains from Mid Nov to first week of Dec and the consequent floods have demoralised many people especially those who were directly affected by the floods (i.e People in the basement where the water entered and had almost all their hosuehold items like sofa , frideg , tv , washing machine etc etc damanged ) . Many senior citizens are traumitised and many refuse to go back to their respective apartments . The Younger and Middle aged people who have to get back to work or attend their business have no choice but to go ahead in spite of their difficulty .

I really do not know which hotel you are talking about and I do not see any major crashing in prices only that hotels are resorting some innovatie means to repackage the items to allow regular hotel eaters to have basic tiffen items at a nominal charge . This was much before the rains and floods when food inflation was high . After this flood I went to two hotels ( they were informal family gettogether of cousins ) and I did not see any fall in prices . Yes it is true that people are bit skeptical of eating out and those who are going out /eating out are those who were only marginally/ not affected affected by floods . Rest of people who have been directly affected and had their house hold items damanged or business infrastructure damaged have to put off going out , eating out , travel etc for few more months . An Insurer / Financial consultant told me that big victim of this flood in terms of business will be hotels , cinemas , travel and leisure industry as people will have less disposable income for the same .
Already Wipro ,TCS have warned that their next quarter earnings will be hit due to this Chennai floods .

auto fellows are in rampage .no observance of meters anywhere.

This has been the norm in the past and will continue to be so . Best is to take call taxis / app based taxis that are at least metered .BTW even auto chaps were hurt badly by the rains and floods and many could not go out to feery people and even the closure of schools for nearly a month hit them badly . Many autor drivers also had their autos damaged and so they will do their best to recover it in the coming months .

Do you type in a notepad and then paste here? It requires effort to know where a sentence ends or begins... :)

What is the changing face here? The aftermath of a disaster surely would not bring happiness to anybody, despite the best efforts of any government. It would take time.

Surprised to note that Krish Sir met an astrologer cum palmist to fix a date for a family function! :D

When you are not very orthodox, it is better to choose the nearest Sunday, as people living in the West do!

P.S: One seemantham was performed on July 4th because of the long week end for independence day, in the U S of A.

Am in Chennai right now...I am booking my travel only in Ola or Taxi for sure as these taxi rates are much more economical as compared to auto rates which are jacked up..You get a better service in these private app based cabs..Many autos were running empty...Market is now determining the prices

Chennai is waiting for the flood relief money...Thousands of cars and 2 wheelers which were submerged in the floods are now waiting for insurance approval..My friend had given his brand new car for service where flood waters entered and engulfed the stationed vehicles in the workshop...His car had to be scrapped..Sad state of affairs...The relief money will be a pittance as compared to the monetary loss!

One category of people who have been worst hit are those whose cars and two wheelers have been completed damaged in these floods . I know of people whose property was saved because they were in the second , third floor of the flood affected areas but unfortunately their cars were in the groundfloor and took a big hit .
As far as insurance claims are concerned I doubt whether they will get more than 30% of the insured sum .

Since it was new year, websites did not have updated info for 2016.

normally I fix marriages or any event with large presence only on weekends.

normally , I do not go to astrologers.

This time since I happened to be in chennai , near a temple, I thought I would use an astrologer. with shop close to it.

I returned swearing that I will keep a safe distance from them.lol
