Built in 1863 and established by Charles Durant and JW Spencer in Anna Salai.
Theosophical Society
Established in the year 1882 in 260 acres garden. It is also called as Huddleston Gardens. The garden has a massive 450 year old banyan tree covering an area of 59,500 sq.ft.
Metropolitan Transport Corporation
MTC buses transport 50 lakh passengers in Chennai every day. But, at the time independence there were just 30 Government buses.
Connemara Public Library
Connemara Public Library on Pantheon Road in Egmore is 118 years old. Today it has a collection of 8 lakh books.
Connemara Hotel
In 1903, Higginbotham’s guide to Madras described ‘The Connemara’ as ‘the only one built specifically as a hotel.’ In 1937, all the rooms were provided with attached bathrooms.
Tariff: Single occupancy: Rs.10 with breakfast; Rs.17.80 for room with all meals.
The piano, which is now in the lobby, dates back to 1922.

Villivakkam : Derived from Vilvam.
Perambur : Derived from the many casuarinas (perambu) groves that existed in this area.
Avadi : Abbreviated form of Armoured Vehicles and Ammunition Depot of India, the most acceptable definition, though it existed much earlier.
Besant Nagar : Owes its name to Annie Besant, Theosophist.
Mylapore : Used to be area where peacocks (mayil) roamed about freely.
Thiruvanmiyur : Place of sage Valmiki – thiru Valmikioor
Sowcarpet : From Sahukar, meaning businessmen, pettai, place. Place of businessmen.
Kodambakkam: Per experts, the name could have been derived from Goda Bagh or Karkodagan Pakkam.
