Indian cities are definitely among the cheapest! While the poor can sustain by having food in Amma Unavagams, for the middle class a family of 2 without rent can survive on Rs 6000 excluding medicines... Singapore is the most expensive city!!

Parts of India are a great bargain as well, though you wouldn’t know you’re in a bargain country if you get transferred to Mumbai or Bangalore for a job. There’s a lot of money and investment in those cities and plenty of millionaires milling about. Instead look to the smaller cities and Himalayan mountain towns where it’s not unusual to find a house to rent for a couple hundred dollars and restaurant meals for what you spend on a soda in your home country. There are thousands of expatriates and travelers taking a pause that are easily getting by for $600 a month total here, or spending twice that and living the high life.

there is veg hotel called VEG POINT....its in chennai...in front on my main gate...opposite my home....morning coffee with doasai...

or idli...or poori masala..breakfast less than or nearly one dollar.....afternoon lunch Rs 65/-....a dollar.....night dinner

chapathi/parotta/dosai...same abt Rs 60/-.....when i visited last nov...i stayed for a month.....i never cooked anything

in home...i enjoyed hotel SAPPADU FOR THREE DOLLARS A DAY...

Indeed it is cheap, if we earn equal Indian Rupees to US Dollars in India.
But it is not so....
In Bangalore the " Darshani hotels" serve lunch with limited rice and two pooris, two palyas, sambar, rasa and curd with payasam for 50 rupees ! Now the Government has decided to introduce " namma ootta" on the lines of "Amma canteens" of Tamil Nadu. Which is worrying the poor "Dharshanis" !

Street foods are cheap in delhi

If some can vouch for their hygiene, we can live on next to nothing.

Kulchas with chole cost 20Rs and plate of rice with rajma dal the same amount.

Most labour live on only one of the two.

I try it sometimes.

So far not got hurt.

In places like connaught place, most floating population and many office goers manage with that.

Then there are five stars also offering the same at 100 times the price.

I do not know how good their kitchen are.

The price of rice and all other groceries, oil, milk, etc may vary when compared to other Metros.

But in Chennai, cost of a Movie ticket may not exceed Rs.120/=

As for transportation, for Rs.50/= you can travel throughout Chennai City for a whole day (Any nook and corner)

As for Telephone Bill including Internet, Electricity, Water supply etc are not that much expensive.

With having an eye on economy and at the same time having another eye on decent standard of living,IMHO a middle class couple may requires a MINIMUM of 2,50,000/- per annum.

The price of rice and all other groceries, oil, milk, etc may vary when compared to other Metros.

But in Chennai, cost of a Movie ticket may not exceed Rs.120/=

As for transportation, for Rs.50/= you can travel throughout Chennai City for a whole day (Any nook and corner)

As for Telephone Bill including Internet, Electricity, Water supply etc are not that much expensive.

With having an eye on economy and at the same time having another eye on decent standard of living,IMHO a middle class couple may requires a MINIMUM of 2,50,000/- per annum.

That is cheap indeed. However, if one is a visitor eating in restaurants and renting cars for transportation, then the cost piles up quickly.

Some day, I would like to visit Chennai during the Kutcheri season and live there for about 6 weeks ..
