Chidambaram temple case

Just rational. If mismanagement or misappropriation is the justification for take over, then all institutions, ngos, industries, banks and virtually everything can be taken over by the government. It is morally right to investigate and punish the guilty than wholesale swallowing by the government.

Misuse of church properties and income is rampant but that is a different issue altogether.

Tamilnadu govt is overstretching its authority interfering in temple affairs. many temples are cash rich and agreed those running them are not well versed in accounting. It is a temptation for the govt to control their affairs. politicians may not do a better job of conducting temple affairs. we are a secular country . religion and state should be in different compartments. Court decision is commendable

Any institution which handles money must be brought under proper Audit. If one feels that
Government has no role in Temple administration, then a Committee, comprising educated
people, both men and women, irrespective of caste, must be formed to look after the
day-to-day administration. The Committee may be changed after a specific period.

Cash rich temples may spare part of amount and the same may be used for upliftment
of poor Hindus, irrespective caste, in terms of education and medical.

Sometime back, Kanchi Seer donated a Poonal made of gold worth about lakhs to Tirupathi
Temple, which has enormous amount of gold ornaments. The purpose of donation is not
known. The Seer might have thought that by such donation all poor Hindus will become
affluent soon. Even religious leaders do not know how to use money for useful purpose.

Supreme Court’s verdict comes to rescue of Chidambaram temple

natraj-temple-jan-6.jpg

The Supreme Court on Monday morning set aside the takeover of the sacred Nataraj temple at Chidambaram by the Tamil Nadu State Government, and paved the way for the return of the temple administration to its traditional custodians, the Podu Dikshitars, thus marking the opening of the year with a major civilisational victory for Hindu dharma. The Special Leave Petition by Dr Subramanian Swamy and the Podu Dikshitars was admitted by the Supreme Court; the State Government has been given an opportunity to argue why the temple should continue to be under its control.

The development is a landmark for Hindus and could pave the way for the return of all temples taken over by various State Governments, as Justices BS Chauhan and J Chalemeshwar ruled that ‘small and silly mistakes’ made by the trust cannot be grounds for the Government takeover of temples on a permanent basis. Temples maybe taken over for short periods to sort out problems.

A major beneficiary of this decision will be the Shirdi Sai Baba temple in Nasik, Maharashtra, which has long been eyed by the State Government on account of the richness of the offerings made, which escalate with each passing year.

Other prominent temples in the grip of respective State Governments include the Tirupati Balaji temple in Andhra Pradesh and the Tripura Sundari and Chauda Deota temples in Tripura.

It does more harm than good to any institution if government interferes in its administration. If there is any mal administration or misappropriation in the present setup, that could be probed and the guilty could be thrown out through judicial process. If govt.takes over the administration, there could only be a change in the person/s engaged in the process of misappropriation and nothing better.

Govt can frame rules for audit of finances collected and spent . Minute you talk of changing the existing order with another committee, one cannot escape caste s and nominations based on caste. Rules of worship will be affected Like Tamil archakar and sanskit archakars, also who will get privileges and darshan and how the money wil be spent. you are stepping on a minefield . govt should restrict itself to governing the state and leave temples alone. today I heard about demo. outside Ayodhya mandapam against take over by govt. A pandoras box has been opened

In karnataka, in yediyurappa's regime, many temples (thousands) were returned to the original trustees. There were plans to relinquish government control over thousands more. Many sectors - banking, insurance, aviation were nationalized and then denationalized. Why worship which is more ancient and has more divergent traditions cannot be left alone to self-manage. Financial and property mismanagement can be tackled in many ways. In fact most of the temples have lost their lands and sources of income from properties.

Places of worship of other religions are not touched. The british devised a system to weaken hindus; and hindus need the will and strength to restore old values.

Which country and which government has places of worship under its control?

The Tamil Nadu Government's HR&CE Department took charge of the Ayodhya Mandapam in West Mambalam on 4th january,2014 on a day that the Spreme Court ruled against the State's administration of the Chidambaram Natarajar Temple.
Actually the Ayodhya Mandapam built before 60years(formed in 1954) and functioning as a place for religious discourse and hosts concerts. There is no any Sila roop of Gods but it has depictions of Rama, Sitha, Radha and Krishna and devotees worship in a small shrine in the hall. Because of a person whose application for membership to the Sri Rama Samajam was rejected by the committee who are managing the Ayodhaya Mandapam, a, marriage hall, Gnanavapi(near T.Nagar Busstand) and a Higher Secondary School.
In this connection volunteers of the Hindu Mahasabha held protests outside the Mandapam after the take over by the Govt. The HR&CE department appointed an official to probe the financial affairs of the Sri Rama Samajam.

A significant judgement. What about other temples which have been taken over by the governments. On the one hand they are trying to sell psus. Here they want to take over. Why? Because there is no investment, no infrastructure nor marketing problems. The whole money is profit. Basically being a secular country, government should not interfere in such matters however attractive the idea may be! Governments should set their own house in order on priority. There may be problems. Government should handle them within their existing powers and of course can ensure these sacred precincts are only for praying.

Most temples like this Chidambaram get into trouble because the families of priests look at the temple as a kind of collective monopolu or a private limited company of their families exclusively. That encourages unlimited malpractices which help those priests with a vested interest in the (read : incomes/properties from) temple to fatten themselves.

In the case of Chidambaram there are all the descendents of the original "Thillai Moovaayiratthavar". We do not know what kinds of malpractices are going on in the temple. I had only one very unpleasant experience of visiting that temple; unfortunately, I entered from the southern gate and the whole temple precincts was a vast latrine with highly obnoxious smell even before reaching the temple entrance. I thought to myself, "Ïf the god here is incapable of even preventing such misuse and bad smell, what power has he got?!" and returned without visiting.

If the Deekshitars are all really honest, they should welcome an outside auditor, acceptable to HR&CE also and get a complete audit done and publish its conclusions.

Sangom Sir is right. But cleanliness and hygiene is maintained by individual's attitude. Swarming population should be empowered to be clean. "Cleanliness is godliness" is a just propaganda slogan which has yet to find acceptance by all and one.

why do you think only politicians and bureaucrats alone have monopoly over corruption and not priests . Hygiene may not figure very high in the priority list of priests. have you ever visited kashi vishwanath temple. it is equally stinking

hi
even toilets are very bad shape even some US hindu temples.....we never give importance to hygiene....most of the hindu temple

toilets are same....becoz our attitudes towards others....its attitude/genetical problems....we never care about other devotees...
