It differs from Gothram to Gothram.


This is just a Bramin traditional style of introducing oneself that is in practice while seeking blessings from elders.


The reason for this exclusion is - Girls being gaining two different Gothram identity [One from her father before marriage & another from husband after marriage], were denied from this due to un-uniformity.


Why are there no female rishees in the abivadaye?


The Dharmashastras, part of Smirti, were quite ancient and based on the Vedas itself. The only difference is they were man made by the Rishis based on their understanding of the Vedas.


The Dharmashastras were codified by 18 Maharishis. They were Manu, Parashara, Yagnavalkya, Goutama, Haaritha, Yaman, Vishnu, Sankar, Likithar, Brihaspathi, Dakshan, Angiras, Prachethar, Samvarthar, Achanas, Athri, Apastambhar and Saathathapar.


One has to keep both the hands on the ears and tell "ABHIVADHAYE, bending oneself before doing "SHAASTANGHA NAMASKARAM".

பஞ்சபூதங்களில் உசந்த ஆகாசத்துக்குரியதான சப்தத்தை க்ரஹிப்பது.

This is a kinda exercise equivalent to that of dhorbi-karanam, which we do in front of Shri Ganesa. The prostrate posture provides us to withstand in any situation as it shatters our ego..

It was your post that I had quoted..i had written a reply but i deleted it and could not delete the entire reply as the delete option was not there.

Actually this 2 different gotra for a female, somehow it seems a bit strange.
In a marriage there is union of both masculine and femine energy..so a male too will get some part of the feminine energy from his wife and so would the female get masculine energy from her husband.
The ardhanareshwara concept appears clear..that the left half of a man is his wife and the right half of a woman is her husband.
Some changes is taking place at a subtle level when two people marry.
Some married couples start to look very alike as they age.
There is an exchange of some form of energy..so its strange that only the Gotra of a male remains intact and the Gotra of a female is subject to change.

In matrilineal societies the concept of Gotra is totally absent.
Anyway, I might be wrong.

There are proper Mantras recited from Bride and Bridegroom Vada Pandits to Change the Gothra of the Bride.

This Subject was discussed in this Form Long back in the year 2006.

Pravara is a ritual of changing the bride's and groom's Gotrams (clan) from both families !!​

Are you saying that 90% of the wold lives in Incest? Majority of people in the world do nor know their gotheram. So before making dire prediction based on your baseless theory, you should educate yourself, otherwise only tour ignorance is displayed.

In stead of dwelling on the origins of gothra, you can say the gothra identification has helped those family progeny fairly good. A minority community has suffered a lot because others would not get into that community's in matrimonial alliance. The gothra sticks to the wife who has come in but it goes away if she goes away too from the family. But the gothra will stick to the male progeny in spite of mother's separation. There is no knowing the gothra has come down to the present generation without corruption. For instance how many of our people know of...

Hi Folks - I just got back .

Ok here is a genuine case. A man [ say X ] married a widow [ say Y ] who already had daughter through
her first husband . When the girl was about 19 yrs old, X's father married Y's daughter. So X became
his own Father's Father In Law.

In the course of time the couple [ X's Dad & Y's daughter ] got a son [ say Z ]

Now, what would be the relationship between X & Z ?

Would X become his sibling or grand father ?

[ I have been careful not to mention Iyer / Iyengar / Naidu / Reddy / Mudaliar / Thevar / Chettiar etc anywhere]

Yes we beat up the same subjects with different actors, or sometimes the same actors in different role.
In Hare Krishna group all members get gothram at the time of conversion. In the north even some Brahmins do not know their gothram, the priest assigns them a gothram.

GOTHRAM is derived from noun GO + rootverb TRA of Sanskrit which
means -> Cow + Protect. Earlier, 'Gothram' used to be a place
where cattle were protected and reared, usually in hermiatge premises
or AASHRAMAs, since dairy products were much useful for YAJNA or
fire sacrifice. In simple...

In the court case "Madhavrao vs Raghavendrarao" which involved a Deshastha Brahmin couple, the German scholar Max Mueller's definition of gotra as descending from eight sages and then branching out to several families was thrown out by reputed judges of Bombay High Court. The court called the idea of Brahmin families descending from an unbroken line of common ancestors as indicated by the names of their respective gotras "impossible to accept." The court consulted relevant Hindu texts and stressed the need for Hindu society and law to keep up with the times, emphasizing that notions of good social behavior and the general ideology of the Hindu society had changed. The court also said that the mass of material in the Hindu texts is so vast and full of contradictions that it is almost an impossible task to reduce it to order and coherence.

I met a Panjabi Jat in Jalandhar temple who also had Kaundinya Gotheram. If Gotheram is by lineage then how can it cross the Caste barrier?



At one time, Gotheram might have been identified as an alumnus of a school run by a Rishi. Subsequently, they might have branched out, just as IIT alums can be found worldwide.

Wow! What an elaborate explanation - you really have tried to put things in perspective. But, be assured,
somebody will press the "Rewind & Play" button and it will start all over again. We are just NOT getting a
move on, on the subject.

The Mahavrao - Raghavendrarao verdict [ the entire text of which I'd earlier quoted ] ought to have been an
eye-opener for the whole populace, pan India basis. But despite the lapse of over 60 years since the pronouncement, nothing seems to have actually changed.

It is a type of a Medieval mind-set that we seem to be stuck...

I cannot understand the logic behind this. If the marriage is cancelled the girl should be able to go back to her gothram.

So if she decides to re-marry she should be quoting her ex-husband's gothram as her gothram?

If the prime event which caused the gothram change has been reversed why should she be stuck with the new gothram?

Is there any shastra confirming this?
