NEW DELHI: As the world's biggest consumer of sugar, India would always have been a difficult market to crack for substitute sweeteners. But it did seem that health concerns — diabetes and obesity are rapidly spreading among the population — might put a dent in that sweet tooth.
Seeing the number of people joining gyms or queuing up to see the endocrinologist, companies launched sugarfree ice creams, cola and gum to tap the market. It doesn't seem to be working. Even in the West, where sugar has earned a bit of a bad reputation for its supposed links with poor health, substitutes are becoming less popular.
Last Friday, PepsiCo chairman Indra Nooyi said on the company's first-quarter earnings call that globally millennials were going back to "real sugar" drink ..
