The Smartphone industry is an industry of monopolies. Apple and Samsung control most of the smartphone market, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Peek behind the curtains, and you’ll see more companies that absolutely dominate the industry.
For instance, Qualcomm, which has chipsets in just about every smartphone out there, and when it comes to the big leagues, it is almost impossible to find a smartphone without a Qualcomm SoC.
Then there’s ARM, whose designs are present in every smartphone on the planet, including Apple’s iPhones.
That’s just chipsets. If you dig deeper, you’ll find that most smartphones on the market use Corning’s Gorilla Glass to protect the display. Gorilla Glass is pretty much ubiquitous, and can be found in almost every smartphone, unless it is a low-end one. Till now, all four generations of Coring’s Gorilla Glass have excellent scratch-resistance, but are quite exposed to drops. That is why when you scratch keys on Corning Gorilla Glass, you don’t see scratches, whereas when you drop it, it cracks or shatters.
Now, Corning has revealed the next generation of Gorilla Glass, and this generation is designed to be sturdier and more resistant to drops. In fact, Corning has performed drop tests from over 5 feet, and the glass came out unscathed. However, in these tests, it did not fall on its side, which is a scenario that plays out quite often in real-life usage, which is why we cannot say for sure that this is shatterproof or even shatter-resistant.
We may see Gorilla Glass 5 being used in flagships coming in the second half of 2016.
