[h=1]Corning is working on a new scratch Resistant Glass: Project Phire, which is comparable to Sapphire[/h] February 7, 2015 Kishore Ganesh Leave a comment Edit
Currently, Corning’s Gorilla Glass is used everywhere in the Smartphone Industry, with many major manufacturers using it in their Smartphones.
However, in recent times, a new competitor has emerged: Sapphire. Sapphire is much more scratch-resistant than Gorilla Glass, and is slowly becoming cheaper to Produce
Apple chose Sapphire for its Smartwatch, but didn’t use it for its Phones because Sapphire at those sizes is too expensive, too slow to Produce, and it does have its disadvantages.
Gorilla Glass is more shatter-resistant than Sapphire, is cheaper to produce and is clearer than a Sapphire Glass Display. But that is no longer enough, which is why Corning is working on Project Phire, as it announced.
Project Phire is a new type of scratch-resistant Glass approaching Sapphire in terms of scratch resistance, while still having the same shatter-resistant properties of Gorilla Glass.
It is the best of both worlds, and may perhaps appear in Smartphones soon. It would also give Corning a ticket into the Watch Market, as many Watches use Sapphire Glass, and this is where Project Phire can convince watch-makers to switch. We are extremely excited about the possibilities of Project Phire.
