india is a big country

one cannot expect some filth happening in say bangalore to make us over cautious in delhi and viceversa.

not many are objective in weighing risks and end up with over protectionism

we need to live with positive feelings but am not expecting anyone to be foolhardy about lack of safety and over react.

I like the attitude of delhi ladies.

Most of them are mentally tough.

I see them early morning in semi darkness{ in delhi it is fairly dark at 6am in winter] on the streets buying milk and escorting children to school buses on the roads.

mostly ladies do that.

Many can manage unwanted attention from men pretty well .

they are tougher than their counter parts in south.

dear Krish ji,

Its not about being tough..its about putting yourself at risk.

One thing to bear in mind that it is not easy to physically overpower a man that too a criminal minded one.
Even normal men themselves find it hard to over power a criminal male.

I still feel do not take chances when it comes to safety.

Once during a conference I was seated next to an oldie doc who kept dropping his pen down many times so that when he bends down to pick it up his shoulder was lightly touching my legs.

The 1st time I didnt think too much about it becos I thought Ok he is no young man.

Then again and again he was doing it and after sometime when I saw him drop the pen again and as he bend down to pick it up I stepped on his hand with my high heels and said "OMG I am sorry..let me pick up that pen for you"

So you see No One can be trusted. Anyway he stopped dropping the pen after that! He deserved it!LOL

Dear Renu,

Oldies bother not ONLY the glam maams! A few years back, I was travelling with Ram from Madurai to Chennai by a night bus.

When the lights were put off and a dim light was on, some dark thing seemed to touch my shoulder. I found that an old man from

the back seat extending his hand to do so! When I turned back, he took his hand off. After a few minutes, he repeated his action.

Then I thought I should NOT keep quiet. I took my long and strong hair slide and poked hard in his hand. That guy could not even

shout with pain and stopped doing the mischief. His position would have been 'thirudanukkuth thEL kottina mAdhiri!' :D

Another time, a man from the opposite berth in a train, touched my 50 year old friend with one of his legs! She started to

scold him '^%&*&^*&' in Chennai Senthamizh and that guy moved to another cubicle immediately! :bolt:

dear RR ji,

Somehow I find young men well behaved compared to oldies!LOL

May be the oldie knows his time is running out and tries his luck..the young man knows he has all the time in the world.

In fact I had once known a person who used to attend bhajans and he is some 52 years old and his youngest daughter was only 15 years old and I got to know that the girls shares the same bed with him!

The reason he said is his youngest daughter is very close to him and she behaves like a baby.

All of us were shocked when the girl said 'I am so close to my Papa and I hug him and sleep every night"

I was wondering what an idiot..doesnt he know a 15 year old girl is not supposed to do this and he encourages his daughter to still behave like a kid and the mother does not say anything!

Many ladies have this experience of seniors behaving inappropriately.

many times ladies also are careless while travelling by train.

once on nilgiri express at night , in AC 2 tier one well known female dancer in saree was sleeping with legs outstretched toward side berths unconcerned .

my wife was horrified that men in side berths were given an inappropriate view. She took the trouble of throwing a blanket over her to cover her up.

what do men do in such cases ? . close eyes and pray to God .lol

Dear Krish ji,

Once when I was travelling from Mangalore to Chennai by train back in some 1991 I was sleeping on the upper berth and at night I suddenly woke up cos I felt someone near me and it was indeed a guy from the lower berth who was trying to put an extra pillow for me..he was lifting my existing pillow and placing another pillow.

For a moment I was stunned and wondered what was happening and he told me that "I could hear that you were having a blocked nose and coughing so I thought an extra pillow will help you".

I was not feeling well no doubt.

I said thank you to him but he did take a huge risk by doing that cos what if I had screamed?

Thank God I gave him a chance to explain what he was doing.

The next morning when I woke up I saw even breakfast ready for me.

He had ordered some breakfast from some stop and bought for me too.

Very nice guy.

many times senior citizen take advantage of their age and behave inappropriately.

one south indian professional lady in thirtees who had to call on a senior official weak on ladies front , confessed to me 'From beginning I have been calling him Mama

in tamil to resist his advances' . She , poor thing was getting pestered to meet for lunch get together outside the office by the official.

Ladies land into such problems in office front , specially if they are in marketing and have to meet highly placed clients in govt.

Who asked her to call him Mama?

Mama has many meanings..one can also call a cousin whom one can marry Mama...so may be he thought that she likes him!LOL

She should have stuck with calling him Sir.

Calling people Mama or Machans is not professional.

In india, marketing involves not only marketing products and services . The sales person is chosen based on the caste ,religion , language spoken by the client to ease the

sale and get access to higher ups in decision making role in govt. not a healthy thing to do but a practical reality

Staring at is the common issue being faced by ladies..This happened once when myself & wife were traveling in a train some 10 years back...I had to give one big stare at the stranger straight in his eyes..He understood and did not take the courage to stare again

vgane Sir

Indians in general have the habit of starring ; more interested to know what is going on in neighbor's home, who is travelling in car.. etc etc, but Americans generally do not stare, neither they look for who is travelling in a car.

Dear Mr PJ
Many Americans of Indian origin also do not stare in my experience

Nothing has changed since Nirbhaya's case

Nothing has changed since Nirbhaya's case Dec 16

All promises and statements made by our leaders and ministers have turned out to be shallow. Our suffering gives them their moment in limelight."

"My daughter asks me what I have done to get her justice. She asks what am I doing so that many more like her get justice and I wake up to realize how helpless and trivial I am," the father said, adding that he has not slept peacefully even once since that fateful night

The four adult accused Akshay Thakur, Vinay Sharma, Pawan Gupta and Mukesh were tried by a fast-track court which awarded them death penalty on September 13, 2013. The Delhi high court upheld the death penalty in March this year. Now the family is waiting for Supreme Court hearing on the convicts' appeal.

How could things change, the parents reasoned, when even the four men convicted of their daughter's rape and murder have not yet been punished.

"What is holding the authorities back from hanging those rapists and murderers when all the evidence are in place?" he said disappointment writ large on his face.

Nothing has changed since Dec 16: Nirbhaya's dad - The Times of India

Rapists survive and the agony of the Victims family only prolong; even if the Rapists are awarded death sentences as demanded by many Victims, who knows when the actual punishment takes place?

A justice delayed is amounting to justice denied?
