[h=1]Delhi Police launches WhatsApp helpline to curb corruption[/h]
August 10, 2014

Smartphones and the popular chat messenger -- WhatsApp -- in it has now turned into an effective weapon against errant policemen with Delhi Police launching a new anti-corruption helpline where one can send audio or video clips if any cop seeks bribe or harasses a person.

The new helpline number, 9910641064, has been started on August 6 where one can not only just call and register your complaint but also send a recorded audio or video clip if any police man harasses a person or demands bribe. "The new helpline was launched on August 6 and the response so far has been encouraging. People can do a sort of sting operation and sent the audio or video clip on this number via WhatsApp," said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Vigilance) Sindhu Pillai.

Delhi Police has given advertisements in all popular Hindi and English newspapers as well as on FM channels to raise awareness about the new helpline.

The new helpline is the brainchild of Delhi Police Commissioner B S Bassi who wants the force to be corruption free. "Once we get an audio or video clip, it will be checked at the Forensic Science Laboratory for its genuineness and once the authenticity is established, action will be taken against the errant policeman. So far we have got one genuine complaint and action is being taken in this regard," said Pillai.

Anybody who will be found guilty in this connection will be booked under Section 7 (public servant taking gratification other than legal remuneration in respect of an official act) and Section 13 (criminal misconduct by a public servant) of the Prevention of Corruption Act and other sections under the Indian Penal Code. If found guilty, the officer will be suspended and arrested immediately, police said.

these kind of initiatives are only a knee jerk reaction

people who lodge complaints may meet the fate of RTI activists some of whom have been eliminated by those affected by their actions

in many offices suggestion boxes have been placed on improving the working of companies by progressive govt undertakings

anybody who gives suggestions is normally risking his career as the ruling group is severe on these smart guys who tell seniors how to perform

It is normally the low level corruption that is caught..The higher level ones are well connected, networked & it requires agencies like CBI to do the snooping (like the Syndicate Bank Chairman case)

I live in Delhi and regularly interact with police personnel. This is in some form one can call a "'step"' or ""initiative"' with a short term gain... Fight against corruption cannot be achieved by such activism, that's my honest opinion. Delhi is one strange city with strange people !!! Corruption is reciprocatory in nature. Here in Delhi, people love to disobey and every second person on the street is connected... last month in the sub registry, where documents r submitted, 15 people standing on the line and one johnny is pushing is mobile inside (talk talk). He came late, incomplete documents but he is making some unknown donkey speak to that clerk... (only a sample). Most of the time, money is on offer without the second party asking for it !!! Over a period of time, the amount will get fixed like a tariff card... This initiative is great to the extent that "it will put some people to FEAR. This FEAR may last for some time - against some judge will say "'this is not admissible evidence"' !! The FEAR is something which should be in perpectual in nature and equally the bribe giver should also be taken to task. The option by police should be given to honest govt officer also where general public will walk it and say "SIR AAP BOLO KYA CHAHIYE"". Every one in the system will start behaving once the FEAR is set in - end of the day :: FEAR IS THE MOTHER OF MORALITY...
