In 1296 CE, the temple was once again destroyed by Sultan Allauddin Khilji's army. According to Taj-ul-Ma'sir of Hasan Nizami, Raja Karan of Gujarat was defeated and forced to flee, "fifty thousand infidels were dispatched to hell by the sword" and "more than twenty thousand slaves, and cattle beyond all calculation fell into the hands of the victors".

There were more Indian defenders, but they did not resist.
The following extract is from “Wonders of Things Created, and marvels of Things Existing” by Zakariya al-Qazwini, a 13th-century Arab geographer. It contains the description of Somnath temple and its destruction:
“Somnath: celebrated city of India, situated on the shore of the sea, and washed by its waves. Among the wonders of that place was the temple in which was placed the idol called Somnath. This idol was in the middle of the temple without anything to support it from below, or to suspend it from above. It was held in the highest honor among the Hindus, and whoever beheld it floating in the air was struck with amazement, whether he was a Musulman or an infidel. The Hindus used to go on pilgrimage to it whenever there was an eclipse of the moon, and would then assemble there to the number of more than a hundred thousand."
“When the Sultan Yaminu-d Daula Mahmud Bin Subuktigin went to wage religious war against India, he made great efforts to capture and destroy Somnat, in the hope that the Hindus would then become Muhammadans. As a result thousands of Hindus were converted to Islam. He arrived there in the middle of Zi-l k’ada, 416 A.H. (December, 1025 A.D.). “The king looked upon the idol with wonder, and gave orders for the seizing of the spoil, and the appropriation of the treasures. There were many idols of gold and silver and vessels set with jewels, all of which had been sent there by the greatest personages in India. The value of the things found in the temples of the idols exceeded twenty thousand dinars."

Somnath - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In 1782-83 AD, Maratha king, Mahadaji Shinde (Ruler of North India: Ujjain/ Gwalior/ Mathura) victoriously brought the Three Silver Gates from Lahore, after defeating Muhammad Shah of Lahore. After refusal from Pundits of Guzrath and the then ruler Gaekwad to put them back on Somnath temple, these silver gates were placed in temples of Ujjain. Today they can be seen in Two Temples of India Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga Mandir & Gopal Mandir of Ujjain.

Was there a India? or just princely states before British India.
Hope the republic of India continues to exist and thrive for a long time.
Sare Jahan se Acha, Hindustan Hamara.

" India was the richest country on Earth until the time of the British in the earty 17th Century "

" India invented the Number System. Zero was invented by Aryabhatta. The place value system, the decimal system was developed in India in 100 BC "

" India never invaded any country in her last 10,000 years of history. "

" India is the only society in the world which has never known slavery."

By mixing bad information with good information the whole post is bad. One bad apple makes the whole busshel go bad.

"....A country which forgets its culture, language and traditions is a sad country.

If unity can be achieved in understanding and preserving our rich culture, rest will follow. Unity to make money is not a stable proposition.

Please do not dismiss the past.

When Transistors invaded the market, the valve radios slowly found their exit. When Television invaded the market, the Transistors found their exit. When color Televisions invaded, the black and white found their exit. With Wordprocessors in computers, the once ubiquitous Typewriters and Typewriting institutes are struggling to survive.

It is Laptops, Palmtops and mobile phones everwhere. Paperbacks hardly sell in the current era of internet and cyberspace. Learning styles have changed. Workstyles have changed. Gone are the days when we had to wait for months to get a BSNL Telephone connection. The BSNL Directory has thinned in the four major cities, let alone the rest.

Bullock Carts and Horse drawn carts are non-existent even in villages.

Change is inevitable. Change in Living Styles is unavoidable. Hold on to that which is beneficial and which would help progress and dispense with that which is obsolete, outdated. Likewise with tradition, customs, norms, lifestyles etc.

Please accept change Mr. Sarang.

Regards,
Acharya

one should not be proud of the vedic culture is it ? so be it.

The Vedas were written on the banks of the Indus. If at all they do form a part of the national culture of any country on earth, it ought to be pakistan (though they are least likely to recognize it or feel proud of it) The Hinduism which is followed today all over india is based on the bhakti movement and has little to do with vedas or vedic hinduism. our heritage is centred upon the veneration of alwars, nayanmars and kamba ramayanam. Vedic Hinduism with its yagams and homams is upheld by Brahmins and some upper castes but it is not the popular faith of the land. It is time that Sangh Parivar orgs realize that instead of harping upon a superficial vedic hindu identity for if they don't they won't be able to make any noticeable impact in tamil soil.
