Very informative, specially for those whose principal diet is rice, like ethnic South Indians and far East Asians.

RICE WAS NEVER MEANT FOR HUMAN Consumption!
RICE IS TASTELESS SUGAR, HENCE WE CAN EAT A LOT OF IT. IN FACT, WAY TOO MUCH FOR OUR HEALTH.
I'm a big rice eater, but this is making me think twice about my rice-eating habit. Veggies are easier to plant than rice and they need less water, among otherthings...

Eat Less Rice!

The human body was never meant to consume rice! You see, our genes have hardly changed in more than 30,000 years. However, our food choices and lifestyle have changed dramatically. The caveman would hardly recognize our food or way of life.

Caveman food was never cooked as fire was not yet tamed. Thus, he ate only those foods that you can eat without treatment with or by fire. He ate fruits, vegetables, fish (sushi anyone?), eggs, nuts and meat. Yes, even meat! You can even eat meat raw if you were starving in the forest. You have the necessary enzymes to digest meat.

However, rice, like wheat and corn, cannot be eaten raw. It must be cooked. Even if you were starving in the desert, one cannot eat rice in the raw form. This is because we do not have the system of enzymes to break rice down. We were never meant to eat rice. To make matters worse, we not only eat rice, but, also make it the bulk of your food.

In some parts of Asia, rice forms up to 85% of the plate. Even if we take rice, keep it to a minimum. Remember, it is only for our tongue - not our body. Actually, rice and other grains like wheat and corn are actually worse than sugar. There are many reasons:

Rice becomes sugar - lots of it!

This is a fact that no nutritionist can deny: rice is chemically no different from sugar. One bowl of cooked rice is the caloric equal of 10 teaspoons of sugar. This does not matter whether it is white, brown or herbal rice. Brown rice is richer in fiber, some B vitamins and minerals but it is still the caloric equal of 10 teaspoons of sugar. To get the same 10 teaspoons of sugar, you need to consume lots of kangkong-10 bowls of it.

Rice is digested to become sugar.

Rice cannot be digested before it is thoroughly cooked. However, when thoroughly cooked, it becomes sugar and spikes circulating blood sugar within half an hour-almost as quickly as it would if you took a sugar candy. Rice is very low in the 'rainbow of anti-oxidants.'


This complete anti-oxidant rainbow is necessary for the effective and safe utilization of sugar. Fruits come with a sugar called fructose. However, they are not empty calories as the fruit is packed with a whole host of other nutrients that help its proper assimilation and digestion.

Rice has no fiber.

The fiber of the kangkong fills you up long before your blood sugar spikes. This is because the fiber bulks and fills up your stomach. Since white rice has no fiber, we end up eating lots of 'calorie dense' food before we get filled up. Brown rice has more fiber but still the same amount of sugar.

Rice is tasteless-sugar is sweet.

There is only so much that we can eat at one sitting. How many teaspoons of sugar can we eat before we feel like throwing up? Could you imagine eating 10 teaspoons of sugar in one seating?


Rice is always the main part of the meal.
While sugar may fill your dessert or sweeten your coffee, it will never be the main part of any meal. You could eat maybe two to three teaspoons of sugar at one meal. However, you could easily eat the equal value of two to three bowls (20-30 teaspoons) of sugar in one meal. I am always amused when I see someone eat, sometimes, five bowls of rice (equals 50 teaspoons of sugar) and then asks for tea tarik kurang manis!

There is no real 'built in' mechanism for us to prevent overeating of rice:

How much kangkong can we eat?
How much fried chicken can we eat?

How much steamed fish can we eat?
Think about that!

In one seating, you cannot take lots of chicken, fish or cucumber, but you can take lots of rice. Eating rice causes you to eat more salt. As rice is tasteless, you tend to consume more salt - another villain when it comes to high blood pressure. You tend to take more curry that has salt to help flavor rice. We also tend to consume more ketchup and soy sauce which are also rich in salt.

Eating rice causes you to drink less water.

The more rice you eat, the less water you will drink as there is no mechanism to prevent the overeating of rice. Rice, wheat and corn come hidden in our daily food. As rice is tasteless, it tends to end up in other foods that substitute rice like rice flour, noodles and bread. We tend to eat the hidden forms which still get digested into sugar.

Rice, even when cooked, is difficult to digest.

Can't eat raw rice? Try eating rice half cooked. Contrary to popular belief, rice is very difficult to digest. It is 'heavy stuff.' If you have problems with digestion, try skipping rice for a few days. You will be amazed at how the problem will just go away.

Rice prevents the absorption of several vitamins and minerals.

Rice, when taken in bulk, will reduce the absorption of vital nutrients like zinc, iron and the B vitamins.

Are you a rice addict? Going rice-less may not be easy but you can go rice-less. Eating less rice could be lot easier than you think.


Here are some strategies that you can pursue in your quest to eat less rice:

Eat less rice-cut your rice by half.Barry Sears, author of the Zone Diet, advises 'eating rice like spice.' Instead, increase your fruits and vegetables. Take more lean meats and fish. You can even take more eggs and nuts.

Have 'riceless' meals.

Take no rice or wheat at, say, breakfast. Go for eggs instead.

Go on 'riceless' days.

Go 'western' once a week.

Take no rice and breads for one day every week.

That can't be too difficult. Appreciate the richness of your food. Go for taste, colours and smells. Make eating a culinary delight. Enjoy your food in the original flavours.

Avoid the salt shaker or ketchup.

You will automatically eat less rice.

Eat your fruit dessert before (Yes! No printing error) your meals.

The fiber rich fruits will 'bulk up' in your stomach. Thus, you will eat less rice and more fruits.
It's your life.
Decide what you want to eat!
But eat less rice!

This is a Malaysian article....you can see the malay words in it..Kurang Manis..Teh Tarik,Kangkung etc.

BTW on a personal note..it is better to take less white rice cos it can shoot up our insulin levels to digest it and when that happens fat storage increases cos high insulin blood levels favor fat deposition.
 
Water had been proved to be a deadly poison (Di Hydrogen Oxide???)
So rice is being proved to a poison now???

I believe most (almost all) scientific discoveries (observations? research?) in nutrition field are run-of-the-mill.
Because most
(almost all) of the research is done by food manufacturing industries, health insurance companies and corporate hospitals keeping profits as objectives.

Examples are galore:

There is strong division in scientific (doctors? nutritionists?) about human beings consuming milk.All animals wean at some age but Human Beings continue to take milk (ofcourse milk from other species) as source of food.

Most of the doctors, here in USA, ask standard question "did you eat spicy food yesterday night?" when I complain about my stomach burning sensation. I have never come across any doctor, back in India, asking me such a question. Ofcourse quantity of spicy food eaten and food habits of the person in question are indeed one of the factors leading to acidity (stomach burning sensation) but not necessary factor.

Ghee consumption is discouraged, I am one of the believers that ghee is very good for health. Again, the question of quantity is debatable. But, most so called scientists
(doctors? nutritionists? food manufacturers?) have purposefully (or out of ignorance) have left out considering the vital factor ie how ghee is prepared. Ghee produced in industrial fashion (quickly with synthetic enzymes etc.,) is different ( and main reason for harmful for consumption) from how ghee is prepared at home in traditional manner. Again, source of milk (cow? buffalo? organic? hormone based? etc), how curd is made, how cream is yielded etc., are also important factors.

Etc.,

Believers in scientific research (poorly done) are not immune to ignorance, short-sightedness and suffer from jumping to conclusions and biases.
Again, because most (almost all) of the research is done by food manufacturing industries, health insurance companies and corporate hospitals keeping profits as objectives.

My post is not a comment on your post (ie Rice) but my post is about opinion on such research in general.

As a student of science, I am open to change my views/opinions all the times.

The right order is air, water and food.

Somehow the poison in the air has been overlooked.

When will the scientists try to prove that oxygen is a great poison??? :bump2:
 
We make prediction that such and such planet is not bio-friendly

meaning nothing can live there-under the present conditions.

What if some aliens who live in atmospheres with less % oxygen in them,

predict that earth is not bio-friendly because of the high % of oxygen

in the air - which being a supporter of combustion-

poses as a potential threat to all the lives on earth??? :faint:
 
Not necessary. A little wait will bring new findings that will reinstate older findings rejecting recent findings.

A good statistician can draw a straight line from any set of scattered and jumbled data.


As a student of science, I am open to change my views/opinions all the times.

Can White Rice Be a Healthy Food Choice?

For years, I believed that white rice should be avoided completely. I believed that it had very little nutritional value and that it contributed to constipation.


Over time, I have come to realize that white rice does provide useful nutrients, and that there are situations where white rice can be a better choice than brown rice for your health.


Here are some important points and guidelines on eating white and brown rice:


1. Since white rice is brown rice that has been stripped of some of its nutrients, brown rice is superior in its nutritional content. Specifically, brown rice is an excellent source of niacin (vitamin B3) and magnesium, a good source of thiamin (vitamin B1) and iron and a moderate source of protein, fiber and zinc.


2. White rice has less fiber and vitamins than brown rice, but is an excellent source of niacin and a moderate source of protein, thiamin and iron.


3. If you can eat brown rice without experiencing any abdominal discomfort, bloating, or gas, then it is a better choice for you than white rice because of its greater nutritional density.


4. If you experience abdominal discomfort or bloating after eating brown rice, it is worth your while to try eating white rice. Because of its lower fiber content, white rice is less abrasive to your intestinal lining than brown rice, a helpful feature if you have weak or damaged intestines. Many people who have colitis and/or problems with diarrhea find that they can digest white rice without any discomfort, while brown rice causes pain and gas production.


5. If you choose to eat white rice, be sure to eat it with plenty of cooked vegetables to prevent constipation. Fiber from well cooked vegetables does not typically cause irritation to a weakened or damaged intestinal lining.


6. If you are a diabetic or are at risk of being a diabetic, it is best to stay away from white rice completely because of the stress it puts on your blood sugar-regulating mechanisms.

Can White Rice Be a Healthy Food Choice?


Japanese health was optimal – rice and all – until that country got a taste for beef. The stats are apparently changing significantly in that part of the world with regards to weight and heart disease.
