Eternal Question - Purpose of Life !!

So what is the real purpose of life? – this question has haunted people right through history. so much of suffering in this world, & for what purpose & for what end result?

Is there a purpose to life at all?, is there any pattern to this chaotic world?, and why are we all born in the first place? And what does our religion say about this?

First off, everything in this world is transient; whatever we create is ultimately destroyed by man or natural disasters. All empires have collapsed in history, many due to war, internal strife, or natural calamities.

Since this entire world is transient, there cannot be a permanent collective objective for the human race, not even the idea of propagating our species to eternity, cos many animal species have vanished permanently from this world.

So the question then is do we individuals have a purpose of life?, if so, what is it ?

Now, those who are following my posts, know that the Karma theory is verifiable, and in all probability “i” has an existence beyond this lifetime, Gods, Evil, Angels, Demons & Supreme Being exists since we can have multiple levels of consciousness. And our world is a complex play of these positive & negative energies!

So lets analyze this again more closely.

Lets call the human being as “i”.

Only the “i” has the unique property of getting rewarded for its actions – Good or Bad. If the “i” works hard, does good, he gets rewarded, but if the ”i” indulges in bad actions, then he gets punished. Most importantly this does not happen immediately, it happens after years, and many times after decades – lets call this delayed effect.

So the “i” somehow carries this “Karma” with it across years & then it gets rewarded or punished. So there is no “instant karma” where the “i” gets rewarded or punished immediately. Somehow, the Karma gets carried with the “i” across time into the future. As I mentioned in my earlier post, most carry the good or bad karma beyond this life time based on their actions here in this lifetime.

In short, Karma Phala is the “fundamental causal effect” for our birth in this world, that we as “i” are born as Human Being, when we gain Karma Phala (irrespective of whether it is Good or Bad) in this world or in other worlds !!

So if Karma Phala is the real “causal effect” of our birth, then our purpose in life is “to resolve this Karma & ensure we don’t gain any additional Karma – neither Good nor Bad” !! If there is NO Karma Phala at all, then there is no birth nor death & we go to higher world or become one with the Supreme Being – Brahman !!

Hence, our Brahmin Rishis, talked about “Nishkama Karma – selfless or desire less actions”, & they did not want even Good Karma as this means, they have to come back again to this world & enjoy the fruits!!

Also the reason, they called our world as “Karmabhoomi”, & believed in the Karma theory, and all our actions have a Karma Phala – good or bad attached to it!!

Lord Krishna goes in the form of a Brahmin to Karna & asks for his Karma Phala when he is fatally wounded in the war, since he had gained enormous Good Karma during his lifetime. Without Karna giving away his karma phala, he cannot achieve liberation!!! so unlike the popular negative perception on this event, only by shedding the karma phala, could he get liberated from this world.

Also the reason why meditation is one of the most followed path by our ancestors, as it helps to still the mind, & detaches from the senses – both pleasure & pain, & achieve a state where our actions do not cause any additional Karma Phala !!!!

Warriors were repeatedly told that they achieve immortality when they die in a war !! They were willing to sacrifice their lives for the sake of others, this is an act of ultimate self less action, unmatched by anything else, hence they achieve liberation/salvation from this world!!.

Now some may ask – why does the creation exists at all ?, that’s a discussion for another day !!

Now that we are here, our purpose is to go for “liberation” or gain enough good karma, so that we are born again in a similar or better situation in this world or a similar world !!

Dear Jaykay,

I also believe that the purpose of life is for the soul to move towards liberation. Good topic

The purpose of life is to live and then die.

Not too hard actually...but we try to complicate everything in between life and death.

I think Renukaji had elaborated in a little more detail elsewhere in the forum. Between birth and death, one is supposed to work, eat, sleep and get laid. Not my words ...

Ok, now to bring a little more serious science into the discussion. Is the above only relevant for humans? Don't plants and other animals also deserve a chance to be liberated?

Turns out I may be supporting Renukaji's thesis after all.

Dear Sravna,

Why do we have to strive for liberation?

For those who do not desire anything..they should also not desire liberation.

Dear Renuka,

Liberation is just a consequence when you are free from desires. So one need not explicitly seek liberation but the process towards it is happening all the time.

Dear Sravna,

Liberation is supposed to be the destiny of every soul eventually..so why worry too much of the purpose of life?

Even if the purpose of life is to attain liberation..each one of us will reach that state eventually by hook or by crook..so there is no need to even think about liberation.

If we go by our Vedas and Puranas, Liberation- from re birth cannot be achieved by hook or crook. The soul has to work hard to undergo immense penance to achieve the same. So if we are talking about true liberation, the liberation from re birth, i.e Moksha, we have certain things to do when we are alive. Don't ask me for scientific proof, I only go by our Vedas, which I strongly believe.

Do we really need all this extra load to attain liberation? Why torture ourselves?

Simply existing is much easier.

Let our souls get recycled form birth to birth until God gets sick and tired of us and comes up with a new plan!LOL

Had simple existence been that easy the world would never have this much of problems we have now. Tell me just one country where peaceful life exists. Some countries are troubled by terrorism, some by recession, Some have mountains of money and some face acute poverty (like some of African countries). Even within a country some states face acute drought, where as some are troubled by floods, some areas are full of jobless people, some other search for people to work what I mean to say is life has challenges to face at every step. The decision to go on taking birth continuously may be taken by the individual soul whether he/she wants to face its every single time take new birth or get relieved of these problems for ever!

The best is to live and let live! :peace:
We should do good to ourselves and to others around us. :grouphug:

Who knows? Our good deeds in this life MIGHT give us a better life, if we are to be born again! :baby:
