Allocating subsidies to the rich cannot be part of a pro-poor paradigm.

The latest public “dog and pony show”, unveiled on Thursday in Delhi, is the selection of 20 cities across the richest 11 states of India for accessing the governments Smart Cities fund. The near-complete exclusion of the poor “cow belt” states, except Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, can be explained by the need to first push public money to where elections are to be held in 2016 — Assam, Punjab, Tamil Nadu and Kerala — West Bengal being a surprising exclusion.
But what takes the cake is the inclusion of the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC), comprising just three per cent of Delhi’s area, which is directly administered by the Centre. The Central government owns nearly 90 per cent of the 44 sq km it comprises with marginal ownership in and around the prestigious Lutyens’ zone of power brokers, lobbyists, old-economy business people, big time realtors and other hangers-on of this rarified ecosystem.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi of all people, should know the negative feeling generated from being excluded by the establishment. He must have experienced the chagrin of public money being wasted on “gilding the lily” whilst millions of poor children, like him, had to make do with a subsistence existence. Or is human memory so frail that one quickly forgets the bad times?

The future of smart cities program will be decided by the success of this pilot initiative! This has to managed like a Project!

Why do you think, the government will change its priorities?
Will there be a divine intervention?
I think it will be politics as usual, except for the BHAKTS.

The Narendra Modi government's vision of creating 100 smart cities will require an investment of over $150 billion over the next few years, with private sector being a significant contributor, says a report.

According to Deloitte, nearly $120 billion will come from the private sector.

The government has already initiated two programmes with an initial outlay of $7.513 billion for 'Smart Cities Mission' and the 'Atal Mission for Rejuvenation of Urban Transformation (AMRUT)' for the upgradation of 500 existing cities.

"Even as funding for these smart cities is an area of concern, the major challenges remain with respect to the development of smart cities project management, government decision making and policy and regulatory framework," Deloitte India's PN Sudarshan said.

The government recently announced the list of first 20 cities to be developed as 'smart cities' with Bhubaneswar topping the list followed by Pune, Jaipur, Surat, Kochi, Ahmedabad, Jabalpur, Vishakapatnam, Sholapur, Davangere, Indore, New Delhi, Coimbatore, Kakinada, Belagavi, Udaipur, Guwahati, Chennai, Ludhiana and Bhopal.

While several cities have made incremental investments in smart solutions, the challenge will be to replicate these on a larger scale, he said.

According to the study, in 2016, service providers and over-the-top content providers will invest heavily in city- wide Wi-Fi networks which will be the back-bone for smart city services.

"As smart solutions are heavily dependent on ICT, service providers will play a significant role in smart cities. In 2016, service providers will participate in (and lead in many cases) consortiums for responding to RFPs for smart or digital solutions for various city and state governments," Sudarshan said.

I think you have not understood..The smart city success is a key priority for Modi Government! Modi will leave no stone unturned for its success! Amitabh Kant a very reputed Secretary will spearhead this!

[h=1]DIPP Secretary Amitabh Kant outlines top priorities for Smart Cities in India[/h]

Urbanisation is now a global megatrend and by 2050, around 64% of the developing world and 86% of the developed world is expected to be urbanised. Rapid urbanisation is putting a strain on the infrastructure, environment and social fabric of cities. The new Indian government has taken cognisance of this accelerating expansion. Investments required to stabilise, augment as well as build a robust urban infrastructure are at the forefront of the government’s current agenda.
This was echoed in the inaugural address at a seminar on "Smart Cities - The Urban Challenge" by Mr. Amitabh Kant, Secretary, Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP), Government of India, where he said, "One of the key challenges for India to grow at 9 to 10 per cent per annum is the challenge of urbanization. He further remarked that according to a recent study, India will have 700 million people getting in the process of urbanization by 2050 and therefore the challenge for India is to create two and a half Americas by 2050 and do it in a far more innovative and sustainable manner.”
