Five Reasons Prahlada Is the Best Son You Could Ask For

June 25, 2015

“Prahlada Maharaja said: O Supreme Lord, because You are so merciful to the fallen souls, I ask You for only one benediction. I know that my father, at the time of his death, had already been purified by Your glance upon him, but because of his ignorance of Your beautiful power and supremacy, he was unnecessarily angry at You, falsely thinking that You were the killer of his brother. Thus he directly blasphemed Your Lordship, the spiritual master of all living beings, and committed heavily sinful activities directed against me, Your devotee. I wish that he be excused for these sinful activities.” (Shrimad Bhagavatam, 7.10.15-17)

It’s the way to satisfy one of the three debts assumed at the time of birth. Contrary to what we might think, we don’t create the circumstances present when we exit the womb.

Our karma, or fruitive action that has corresponding reactions, certainly was responsible for landing us in that particular area, but other living entities did things to make everything come together. The three debts are to the forefathers, the saints, and the controllers of the material nature. The debt to the forefathers is paid through begetting a son.

These debts relate to the material sphere. The spirit soul is sanatana, or eternal. According to Ramanujacharya, the word sanatana means that which has no beginning and no end. The essential characteristic of something is its dharma, so in the Vedic tradition the best corresponding term for religion is “sanatana-dharma.” This is not a faith. It is not an option to check off on a government form. Saying that you believe in sanatana-dharma is like saying that you believe in the law of gravity. Sanatana-dharma exists irrespective of anyone’s belief in it, the same as it is with the laws of material science.

For the soul in the material world, to become reacquainted with the original engagement for the soul is not so easy. It typically requires a gradual elevation, and so we encounter things like the three debts. By repaying these debts, one learns to give respect to others, to not be solely focused on sense gratification. It is a means of gradual detachment from the body, i.e. what is not the soul.

Begetting a son is beneficial in other ways also. If you repeatedly violated the laws of material nature and didn’t become perfectly God conscious by the time of death, you’re likely to suffer in the afterlife. The good son can alleviate that suffering through their deeds. The Sanskrit word for son, putra, literally means one who delivers a person from hell.

When speaking of the spiritual side, one should only have children in order to release them from the cycle of birth and death. Never mind elevation to heaven and hell, which represent temporarily manifest places. Bring your dependents to the highest point of pure devotion to God. This is also known as Krishna consciousness. That is the real meaning to sanatana-dharma: meeting the soul’s true nature of service to God that continues without impediment and without interruption. An example of a son who satisfies both the material and spiritual aspects is Prahlada Maharaja. He can be considered the perfect son.

1. He listens well.

The father and mother are wiser than the child. This is the way of nature brought about through experience. So if you beget a son, you want them to listen to wise instruction. If they fail to follow good counsel, they will be on the wrong path in life. Just imagine Prahlada’s greatness, then. He listened to the science of self-realization while within the womb. He heard everything essential about life from Narada Muni, the great traveler of the three-worlds. After birth, Prahlada retained the knowledge. We forget things of consequence so quickly, but Prahlada remembered the most important information.
ṛṣiḥ kāruṇikas tasyāḥ
prādād ubhayam īśvaraḥ
dharmasya tattvaṁ jñānaṁ ca
mām apy uddiśya nirmalam

“Narada Muni delivered his instructions both to me, who was within the womb, and to my mother, who was engaged in rendering him service. Because he is naturally extremely kind to the fallen souls, being in a transcendental position, he gave instructions on religion and transcendental knowledge. These instructions were free from all material contamination.” (Prahlada Maharaja, Shrimad Bhagavatam, 7.7.15)

2. He is good to his friends.

Another worry for the parent is association. If their son ends up hanging out with the wrong crowd, it could spell trouble. The good parent tries to shield their son from bad influences. At the same time, they want their child to be a good influence on others. In this regard, Prahlada was the best friend. During lunch breaks at school, he would discuss the most important topics with his friends. Even most mature adults never receive this vital information, what to speak of children. In this way Prahlada was the best friend to his peers.

3. He does not force the father to accept his way of life.

Though Prahlada took the instruction of Narada well, he had issues with his teachers and his father. At the command of the father, King Hiranyakashipu, the teachers taught Prahlada only about matters pertaining to state. Being a manager is difficult. All the problems, both large and small, arrive at your desk. Just imagine, then, what the manager of the entire state must deal with. The Vedas give four styles of diplomacy, of which the venerable Shri Hanuman showed himself to be a master many times.
tata enaṁ gurur jñātvā
jñāta-jñeya-catuṣṭayam
daityendraṁ darśayām āsa
mātṛ-mṛṣṭam alaṅkṛtam

“After some time, the teachers Shanda and Amarka thought that Prahlada Maharaja was sufficiently educated in the diplomatic affairs of pacifying public leaders, appeasing them by giving them lucrative posts, dividing and ruling over them, and punishing them in cases of disobedience. Then, one day, after Prahlada’s mother had personally washed the boy and dressed him nicely with sufficient ornaments, they presented him before his father.” (Shrimad Bhagavatam, 7.5.19)

Hiranyakashipu wanted Prahlada to learn these ways, but the boy was not interested. He was focused on devotion to God, bhakti-yoga. The father tried every which way to force the boy to change, but the boy never forced the father. Prahlada counseled in a mild and compassionate way, showing his gentle nature. This was a sign of great respect, as through his devotion Prahlada could have gotten anything he wanted, including force against his belligerent father.

4. He brings God to the family.

e946_12.jpg

Hiranyakashipu was a devout atheist; he considered God to be his enemy. When he saw Prahlada worshiping that enemy, he could not tolerate it. He tried every which way to kill Prahlada, but no attempt worked. It was the boy’s unflinching devotion that finally brought the Supreme Lord to the scene. Though it spelled the end of life for Hiranyakashipu, it was a actually a great boon. The son was perfectly God conscious, and the father had the same consciousness at the time of death. Due to Prahlada, the Supreme Lord in His form of Narasimhadeva came to the family and purified it.

5. He is very forgiving.

nrsimha3.jpg

Despite every offense committed against him, Prahlada did not hold a grudge against his father. When everyone else was afraid of the ferocious form of the half-man/half-lion that had just torn the powerful Hiranyakashipu in half, Prahlada approached nicely. He asked for forgiveness for his father, despite all he had done. The Supreme Lord stated that not only was Hiranyakashipu liberated, but so were twenty-one previous generations in the family. This was all due to Prahlada, the best son a person could ask for.

In Closing
:

To forefathers one of debts three,

By begetting a son of it to be free.

The best of them all, which one?

Look at Prahlada, like him none.

Benefit to his friends and family giving,
And his father’s obstructions forgiving.

Through him God to the family came,
Blessed with vision of Narasimha the name.

There might be a moral story somewhere. But socially that was a disaster.

KCR Unveils Grandiose Scheme for Development of Yadagirigutta Temple

NALGONDA:The works on developing the famous hill shrine of Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy in Yadagirigutta are all set to begin in the new Telugu new year. The new year, Ugadi, falls on March 21.
Chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao is keen that the work on developing the hill shrine begin in the new year after which the new almanac comes into use.
Rao, who visited the hill shrine on Wednesday, held a meeting with officials of various departments after visiting the every nook and corner on the hilltop. Rao said there should be no structure other than the temple, the administrative office and the temple-run guest house on the hill. He wanted one single shopping complex built and all shops, scattered here and there now, shifted into it.
Rao found the back side of Punnami Guest House in bad condition and chided the officials for poor sanitation.
Rao said his government would allocate not less than Rs 100 crore in the budget every year for development of Yadagirigutta. Stating that the hill shrine would be developed as a comprehensive spiritual centre, he said he would ask religious seer Chinna Jeeyar Swamy to visit Yadagirigutta and advised officials to seek his suggestions on development of the shrine.
The chief minister, who wants to develop Yadagirigutta on the lines of Tirumala, said that all the roads leading to Yadagirigutta should reverberate with Vedic chants, spiritual discourses and devotional songs, and asked officials to put in place the required sound systems. “The roads should be lined with boards displaying writings promoting moral values and devotional fervour, and preserving environment”.
Rao instructed officials to construct 500 cottages for providing accommodation to pilgrims. “Reintroduce the service of performance of weddings and Vratams. Ensure that Satyanarayana Swamy vratams for groups are performed on a mass scale on the hill. There should not be any obstruction to these activities even while construction activity is going on”.
Rao said he would constantly monitor the developmental works and asked officials to identify the stone for carving out a massive statue of Lord Hanuman and asked officials to entrust the responsibility to noted sculptors.
When some officials suggested construction of a helipad on the hillock, Rao rejected the proposal, saying that any developmental activity should not come in the way of preserving the sanctity of the temple. Apart from the funds being allocated by the government, Rao said there was every possibility of donors, corporate and multinational companies coming forward to contribute to the development of the temple.

I agree with you.

He was not the best son if we view this story from the human point of view.

Surely even if we have a tyrant for a dad we would at least use our "bhakti" towards God to change the ways of a father instead of getting him killed!

If that does not work..then just leave home and whatever will be will be.

Sorry..I am no fan of Prahlad...I felt he was sort of just to clingy to the idea of God..it did not seem like surrender but more of an addiction to God.

Surrender and Addiction are totally different.

In Surrender one becomes one with the idea of God but an Addiction is an "unhealthy'" obsession.

There is a 'past' for every person in purAnAs which leads to such killings.

Even then many will not prefer to have a son like Prahlada!

He should have followed the adage 'dhushtanaik kaNdAl dhoora vilagu', as Renu says!

Was Prahaladha's father an Atheist?

As usual, like in so many cases, Prahaladha's father was shown as a Shaivite King, in a Tamil Movie, produced by AVM, a Shaivite.

But, Prhaladha's God was a different one. How can he be treated as a good and obedient son. Even Hindu Dharma says, Mahda, Pidha, Guru and Dheivam. Since there is no news about his mother, this guy was supposed to follow his father.

Of course, we may have a cooked up story to justify his change of faith.

தந்தை சொல் மிக்கதோர் மந்திரமேது (tantai col mikkator mantirametu = which mantra is more powerful than father's advice) is also a saying that we have. And we praise skyhigh, Rama as the modt exemplary example of "Pitruvaakya Paripaalanam" and blah, blah, blah.

So, it looks like vishnu when he dons Rama's make-up, will do one thing and the same rule will be openly broken when he (vishnu) desires an entry (in another movie), MGR-style, and wants to show the audience how cruel and bloodthirsty he can be.

The only plausible explanation is that these are all hollow stories which emanated from the brains of some people who were more intelligent than vishnu himself. Believing these as true, and worshipping all these god-forms depends on one's level of gullibility!

Yadagirigutta was the place for eloping lovers to get married in hyderabad some 40 years back.

now I do not know the status.

It was the place for children wanting to defy parents and getting married to their loved ones.

I do not know if this can be called prahaladha effect

PJ Sir,

Thanks for the satsang theme. Except one cannot satsang here on Vaishnava topics, even in religion section!

Here is Prahlada reference from 'Lakshmi Narasimha Karavalamba Stotram':

"Prahalada Narada Parasara Pundarika Vyasadhi Bhagawatha Bhungava Hrinnivasa
Bhaktanurakta Paripaalana Parijatha Lakshmi Nrusimha Mamadehi Karavalambam" ||

One who resides in the hearts of great devotees such as Prahlada, O Nrusimha, offer me your protection.

"Prahlada Ketha Krudavathaara Lakshmi Nrusimha Mamadehi Karavalambam" |

O Nrusimha! Who took avatar to redeem Prahlada from his doom, please offer me your protection.

For the records:

1. Prahlada was too young - just 4 or 5 - and he could not live by himself.

2. Whereas Murugan teaching "Brahmopadesha" to Shiva is not considered "arrogant", why should Prahlada teaching his father the need for worshiping Vasudeva is considered one. Speaking of double-standards!!

Aesop's Fables had more redeeming moral values than some of Ancient Hindu stories.
At least you will not be persecuted for criticizing the fables, but watch out for saying anything against "ancient" Hindu stories.
You will be branded as anti-hindu, anti-Indian etc, by certain individual on this site.

Some of the stories have outdated social values, and even some of the moral are outdated.

I am not a fan of the Hare Krishna Cult. They take our Hindu Scriptures and give it a distinct Cult twist. They are always trying to convert you.

A son/daughter picks up his values and forms his own value system in course of time. This is done at times by listening to the advice of the father and some time just by observing him doing things. This is up to a certain age in the life of the son/daughter. Then as he/she sets out on his/her journey of life in the world there are several occasions when the value system built up and owned comes under severe stress and strain by external events. At each such juncture the son/daughter takes out the particular value, looks for validations that it is indeed a good value worth its place in the value system. If validations are there the value is sent back to the repository of mind for safe keeping and if there are no validations or if the validations are completely on the contrary the value is discounted and put in another compartment to be assessed later. When a particular value repeatedly comes to be questioned, the value is altogether abandoned. Thus we preserve good values and discard bad values even if they were picked up from a respected father. This is what behavioral scientists speak about value system of individuals.

Now coming to Prahlada, he had abandoned every value his father had bestowed on him and so he was no more the son of his father. That is what happens when the son of a murderous rowdy hacks his father mindlessly for attacking his mother (the wife of the rowdy).

The values coming under stress and getting discarded, new values getting picked up etc., are an ongoing process in an individual. It is happening all the time without our knowing it.

Brilliant post vaagmiji.

I appreciate this post #14 from you.

My son Spent couple of years in top B school in india.

Recently When my wife observed him she was very hurt
.
She was unhappy that he had discarded most of the traditional values she had inculcated in him over 20 plus years.

She was lamenting that two years in a Bschool has damaged him beyond repair.

Add to it the MNC worklife in india, It is sad that our youngsters are just going totally downhill on personal front.

Dear Jayashree,

1. This thread is in Sociology forum. Hence such discussions.

2. Lord Shiva WANTED His son to teach Him and that is the main difference!

2. Lord Shiva WANTED His son to teach Him and that is the main difference!

swaminatha.jpg

So Lord Muruga had the consent from Lord Shiva where else Prahlad did not get Hiranyakashipu's consent.

Moral of the story: Kindly get consent before we preach!

It is quite natural difference of opinion arises between parents and children.

It is not unique in Prahalada's case.

We can often come across instances where parents happen to be orthodox and children are not so and vice versa. My friend, an NB, is a staunch believer whereas his father is an atheist. But he has not invited or prayed to God to punish his father.

Prahalada, it seems, is an impertinent boy.

Prahlad is indeed strange.

If he really cared for his father..he should have given up his life instead of allowing Narasimha to tear his father apart.

He should have offered himself to Narasimha and let his father change his mind watching the supreme sacrifice.

After all Purana stories can have an happy ending too..that is Prahlad gets killed by Narasimha..then Hiranyakashipu transforms into a Vishnu Bhakta and begs Narasimha to bring back Prahlad to life and they all lived happily ever after.

See such a nice story.

Thanks Smt JR Ji for your comment

For your Information, There is an interesting Story behind Lord Muruga Teaching the meaning of Pranava to Lord Shiva .

According to a Legend connected to Swamimalai Temple
Mythology says that saint Bhrigu before commencing an arduous tavam or penance, got the boon that anybody disturbing his mediation will forget all his knowledge. Such was the power of the penance that the sacred fire emanating from the head of the saint reached up to the heavens, and the frightened devas surrendered to Lord Siva praying for his grace. The Lord extinguished the sacred fire by covering the saint's head by hand. With the saint's penance thus disturbed the Lord became oblivious of all his knowledge and is said to have regained them by learning the Pranava mantra from Lord Muruga at this shrine.

That's why elders say one should NOT disturb a person when he is doing Puja.

OMG! All elders are equal to Bhrigu munivar! :D

Another story says about how Bhrigu cursed Vishnu:

The story of the curse behind Rama's final separation from Sita and his kids.

In one of the devasura wars, the devas have completely routed the asuras, and a handful of them flee and take refuge with

Rishi Bhrigu's wife Divya/Usha (later, mother of Shukracharya). When Indra confronts her, she refuses to surrender the

asuras, since they've taken refuge in her. The devas then go to Vishnu and appeal to him to come to their aid. Accordingly,

Vishnu visits Usha and asks her to surrender the asuras, telling her that they were a threat to mankind. She declines for the

same stated reason, and tells Vishnu that he'd have to kill her before he could harm them. Accordingly, Vishnu beheaded her

with his sudarshan chakra, and following that, beheaded the fugitive asuras as well.

When Bhrigu returned, he was furious at his wife's killing, and cursed Vishnu that he too would be separated from his wife

when he took a human avatar. Vishnu explained that he had to do what he did for the good of mankind, even though he had

to ugly choices in front of him - either kill the wife or allow a lot of innocent people to be slaughtered by the asuras. However,

he accepted the curse and told Bhrigu that in the treta yuga, the avatar he took then would be the one that sustained the effect

of the curse.
Source: Bhrigu's curse on Vishnu

The "STORY" accord sanction of license to all the sons of the present, to kill the their FATHERS in case they(fathers) pressurise them in any belief..... or ask them to do what they don't like..

................." lol"
