Ganga is now a deadly source of cancer, study says

The holy Ganga is a poison river today. It's so full of killer pollutants that those living along its banks in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Bengal are more prone to cancer than anywhere else in the country, says a recent study.

Conducted by the National Cancer Registry Programme (NCRP) under the Indian Council of Medical Research, the national study throws up shocking findings. The river is thick with heavy metals and lethal chemicals that cause cancer, it says.

"We know that the incidence of cancer was highest in the country in areas drained by the Ganga. We also know why. Now, we are going deeper into the problem. Hopefully, we'll be able to present a report to the Union health ministry in a month or two," NCRP head A Nandkumar said.

The worst-hit stretches are east Uttar Pradesh, the flood plains of Bengal and Bihar. Cancer of the gallbladder, kidneys, food pipe, prostate, liver, kidneys, urinary bladder and skin are common in these parts. These cases are far more common and frequently found here than elsewhere in the country, the study says.

Even more frightening is the finding that gallbladder cancer cases along the river course are the second highest in the world and prostate cancer highest in the country. The survey throws up more scary findings: Of every 10,000 people surveyed, 450 men and 1,000 women were gallbladder cancer patients. Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar's Vaishali and rural Patna and the extensive tract between Murshidabad and South 24-Parganas in West Bengal are the hot zones. In these parts, of every 1 lakh people surveyed, 20-25 were cancer patients. This is a national high. Relentless discharge of pollutants into the riverbed is responsible.

"This is the consequence of years of abuse. Over years, industries along the river have been releasing harmful effluents into the river. The process of disposing of waste has been arbitrary and unscientific. The river and those living along its banks are paying a price for this indiscretion," Chittaranjan National Cancer Institute director Jaideep Biswas said. The Kolkata-based cancer institute is an associate of the National Cancer Registry Programme.

Biswas, a senior oncologist, said Ganga water is now laced with toxic industrial discharge such as arsenic, choride, fluoride and other heavy metals. Dipankar Chakarabarty, director, Jadavpur University School of Environmental Studies, concurs. "We've been extremely careless. Indiscriminate release of industrial effluents is to blame for this."

"The arsenic that's gets into the river doesn't flow down. Iron and oxygen present in the water form ferroso ferric oxide, which in turn bonds with arsenic. This noxious mix settles on the riverbed. Lead and cadmium are equally heavy and naturally sink in the river. This killer then leeches back into the groundwater, making it poisonous," Chakrabarty explains.

Surface water, Chakrabarty explains, is treated before use. But that's clearly not the case with groundwater and it's mostly consumed raw, often straight from source. The impact is devastating. "The consequences of using or drinking this poison can manifest earliest in two years and latest in 20. But by then, it's way too late." Those who've been bathing in this poison river are equally at danger, says Biswas. The need of the hour is to strictly implement laws regulating discharge of industrial waste into the river.

I am so sorry that "ganga" of our lores is this polluted.
What about washing our sins?

not only ganga, many river system turned poisonous / dried up due to poor water resources management .

palar which quenched the thirst of Chennai is one such victim
.
the monetary system rewards the polluters and punish the saviours ( farmers).

this is the price we pay to so called " progress" which the half baked intelligenca of our community celebrates

vazhga jananayagam

Mr. HRHK,
I had to disagree with you on every post.
But I am forced because your argument is so lopsided.
You said

So are you saying that if we stayed in 14th century we would have been better?
That does not make sense. Countries in western europe, USA, Singapore and ther countries have managed their progress musch better, they did not have to pollute their rivers.
The pollution is because of criminal enterprise, mostly by private organization, the lax enforcement and apathy of common public. It is to make quick buck using the progress as a shield.

So your equating progress with pollution is completely off the mark.

Mr. HRHK,

I think you are misreading him. I did not get the impression that HRHK implied that we stay in 14[SUP]th[/SUP] century….nor that progress equals pollution.

HRHK is trying to say the same thing as you do on this topic, may be in his own way. He is calling it tweedledum and you are calling it tweedledee.

you r highlighting the results of mis-rule that India suffered . im exploring the causes.

imho the causes you highlighted seems too superficial to me. how long we are going to tell this. yes corruption here but why here more?

why the modern system like fiat money, democracy works in other country not in India is coz india psych is a bit different from others. i ve touched on this in other thread.

The river Cauvery can never be polluted since there is no water!

This is how it looks in summer 2012:

india with USA/other countries.....strict EPA rules....still BP problem happened in LA in USA....here in india population and scarcity

are more...sophisticated technologies costly...next population....when i compare india in 14th century...we were better than

many so called developed countries...india was looted and misruled by foriegn invasions/rulers....now the results are coming

after many centuries....

You are right, but the jalara party got to you first with likes. LOL

I think Ganga up to Rishikesh is pristine.

IN light of this explanation, my apologies to Mr. HRHK.

Mr. Naina,
do you agree that:
the monetary system rewards the polluters and punish the saviours ( farmers).

Or is it human greed and ignorance that causes the pollution?

And there is a talk of Ganga Cauvery interlinking....So the polluted river water will flow southwards to pollute our land

LOL!

..the monetary system rewards the polluters and punish the saviours..
HRHK was probably shooting from the hips. Perhaps he should have said ‘political system’ or ‘politico-legal’system.

or is it human greed and ignorance that causes the pollution?
Corruption and Greed, most certainly.
Ignorance? I doubt it, if one assumes that there are Government Agencies packed with qualified bureaucrats who are supposed to make appropriate recommendations after due inspection and investigation of the polluters.

No sir, Mr. HRHK means monetary system. If you have read his postings, he riles against the monetary system. He wants the world to return to barter system. He thinks monetary system has been unfair and leads to corruption.

Ignorance: people dumping all kinds of waste including human waste, is due to ignorance. There is no economic gains to anyone.

Only today I read this thread...was surprised to know that Ganga is Toxic now.

I did not expect it to be polluted by industrial pollutants..I thought it was years of people washing their sins had finally made the river scream Ram Teri Ganga Maili !

The entire Ganga is not toxic . Upto Rishikesh it is relatively fine and pure after that it is slowly getting polluted and it is highly polluted near Varanasi and lower areas .
There is lot of Movements going on to Save Ganges and we have to wait and see how far these will be effective .

Despite spending an estimated Rs 2,000 crore under Ganga Action Plans I and II, the sewage treatment capacity and other pollution abatement infrastructure along the Ganga remain woefully inadequate. It must be understood that cleaning and preservation of the Ganga represents much more than saving a river. The new Mission Clean Ganga approved by the National Ganga River Basin Authority mandates an investment of Rs 15,000 crore over the next 10 years to clean the river. Failure to fulfil this goal would not only create the world's worst health disaster zone but also spike India's industrial and economic growth.

some musings... IMHO.. 14th century TN must be in much much better shape than now my hunch. why? law and order should be much more potent than now coz people had respect towards Ishvara shristi and the half baked human (jeeva) shristi was absent in those days .

Many temples were built around that period.

If one read about biographies of sages and saints lived in those era we can infer this.

..................................................................................

On the reasons cited for pollution... " Greed and Corruption" too shallow , HOW LONG YOU ALL GOING TO TELL THIS? ... Greed is a common emotion for all human beings be it in US /Singapore or Japan.

The question is why in India the community is corrupted to the core so much so that it blindly pollutes its own water resources?

............................

On monetary system....

It is not simply I " think" only.. I cited several reason on the folly of fiat money.. please consider those.

One small request.

please consider not to offend people saying them as JALRAS ,sounds a bit rude.

INDIANS.

My thesis was on "cash-less society". I have considered lot of modes of monetary systems.

You probably do not understand it, I did not start it.

After reading thru this i am tempted to break open the small ganges water brass containers sealed with Ganges water to know whether they are drinkable. Some of these have been in the family Pooja almirah for many a years now and water is still there inside and can hear the water sound inside.

Cheers.

Why we single out Ganga alone as polluted river. In our Country every water source, whether it is river, lake or tank is polluted. The holy rivers are polluted more by adding dead bodies as well.

I love the Himalayas and Ganga. I have travelled to various holy places in the western Himalayas. I wish to share some information that I have gathered during my trips on this subject.

I have travelled upto "Gohmuk" the source of Bagirathy (Ganga). The pollution of this holy river starts from Gangothri itself just 18 Kms down, then discharges of gutter water from villages and towns add to the level of pollution.

The purity of Ganga is alluded to the flow of water from hot sulphur springs on the Himalayas which contains high percentage of sulphur .I have taken bath in the famous hot springs at Gangnani on the way to Gangothri. Hot springs are in Gowri kund and Badrinath also. We can see the yellow shades of sulphur water on the slopes of Himalayas which flows from the mountain into the river. People are advised not to gather water for puja from the river at Uttarkashi, since it is highly polluted due to the immersion of dead bodies of Sadhus and Sanyasins there apart from immersion of ashes. Uttarkashi is considered as Holy as Varanasi.

The dam across Bhagirathi at Maneri 15 kms from Uttarkashi is the first dam on the holy river. The multipurpose Tehri Dam across Bhagirathi is considered a huge engineering marvel is the biggest Dam in Asia. The Tehri Hydro Power Complex generates 1000 MW power now, which will add up another 1000MW by 2013.

Now the States and Central Governments are spending crores of Rupees to clean Ganga and Yamuna. The results only will tell about their success.

Brahmanyan,
Bangalore.
