Generosity of the Jains

I have personally witnessed quite a few Jains renouncing their wealth and become sadhus/sadhvis. Sometimes even rich girls as young as 15 or 16 become Jain sadhvis. The life of these monks are extremely tough as they cannot have any possessions, walk barefoot and cannot use lavatories. They have to visit a Jain's house every day and take wheat flour etc for cooking their meals as they are allowed to keep any food items. They have to get rid of all the hairs on their heads by plucking with their hands. In short their life is very very tough.

Now I happened to come across a news that a Jain couple from Surat donated their property worth Rs 180 crores to scools and religious institutions. The husband is 97 years old and the wife 84. They have moved to a senior citizens' home. They have already deposited Rs 50000 with the crematorium so that their ' anthim sanskar' can be taken care of. Amazing couple. Here is their photo.

I like your post, (Not sure about the editorial).
I live among Jains, and share their food habits. They do live the life preached by Mahavir Jain.

Anybody who has done "dhaan" at the age of 37, instead of at 97 ?

There is no age for "DHAAN", at least they did it............ Let us appreciate that. There is no need to belittle others.
There is famous story in Mahabharat about Golden Mongoose.
The Golden Mongoose

The story ends with moral:
By now, the message was clear to Yudhistir. He realised that the brahman's act of charity was far superior. Yudhhistir had a huge fortune from which he had donated only a part whereas the starving brahman's family had only those four rotis which were needed to save their lives but their committment to dharma and faith in God was so strong that they did not hesitate in giving away everything and deciding to make the ultimate sacrifice.

Even though they are 97, their act is still commendable. They did not try and bequeath their wealth to their own kith and kin, instead donated to a common cause.
Thanks KB.
As I said in another post, it is human to appreciate others work, it seems people on this site have three opinion I, ME, And Myself and they think that is all that counts.

I was merely pointing out another angle to the matter... I do not despise the referenced couple or praise them either...

I dont see why people should get worked up over this.

The did inherit that much wealth or made that much. In spite of this Jain community is one of the wealthiest too. In general they do not share. Gandhiji said "thEvaikku mEl vaithiruppavan thirudan". If I consider myself I am no less than them having nothing to share and there are millions like me living a life of pure dharma.

The Jains may be filthy reach but when it comes to charity normally they keep their purses tight..Kudos to this couple who have decided to share the wealth! I salute their realization! Age is immaterial!
