At Google I/O 2014, Google unveiled Android One: An initiative to ensure that Consumers get an optimal Android Experience at the lower-end of the Market. Till now, most lower-end offerings (Excepting the Moto E, of course) were extremely slow and ran outdated versions of Android.
As most people in Developed Countries already own a Smartphone, which is why Smartphone Sales Growth is Declining, companies are now looking towards Developing Countries, where most people still own a Feature Phone. In Developing Countries, Cheap Phones are preferred.
Google is partnering with Hardware Manufacturers for Android One, where partners will manufacture Phones with base-specs and Quality being specified by Google. Android One Phones will receive updates to the latest Android Version as soon as possible, for two years. This was previously limited to only Nexus Devices and Google Play Edition Devices.
Micromax, LAVA and Karbonn have unveiled the first Android One Smartphones. All three have the same base specifications, which is: a 4.5 Inch WVGA (854×480) Display, a 1.2 Ghz Quad-Core Mediatek Processor, 1GB RAM, 5MP Rear Camera and a 2MP Front Camera.
Coming to the Storage, there is 4GB Built-In, expandable to upto 32GB via MicroSD Card. Android One phones also come with Dual-SIM Support.
Android One Phones will also receive 200MB Free Data from Airtel, an Indian Carrier. App Updates and OS Updates won’t be counted in this 200MB.
All three Phones will receive the update to Android L as soon as it releases. Currently, they run 4.4.4 Kitkat. These Phones will support Hindi, a language spoken by upto 40% of Indians.
An Android One Smartphone starts at Rs 6,399 (Around $100). There are slight variations in Price between the three Android One Smartphones.
Currently, these Phones are only available through Amazon, Flipkart and Snapdeal. The Android One Initiative may expand to other Developing Countries soon.
