Government is ready as reported in TOI to ask hospitals to display Treatment Costs to help "treatment seekers"! They have perhaps reached an understanding with the hospital managers and medical profession in this respect. You can expect the current charges, charged by greedy hospitals, to be less than Rs.12.99 paise and the public should be happy about it. Otherwise they do not tell you until your eyes get sunk deep in their cavity. But to be frank, the other charges - like OT, Medicine, cot/room, Visiting doctors, patients' relatives/friends entry charges and exit charges and all other hidden charges will be higher than the hospitals. The Aayas and ward-boys will reason with you that you can pay them more when you are pledging off your life to the hospital.
Liberlization made all drugs very highly costlier (though it was promised to be very cheap). Then in their "zeal" to help public the govt made all sellers to print MRP on packing. The "law-abiding" manufacturers obediently obliged by printing the "Maaaaxxxxxxiiiiimmmuuuummmm" Retail Price on packs. And every retailer sells the MRPed products at least 25% cheaper. A very good ride for the public. By the way there is a new way to measure blood sugar just for Rs.2/-. Wait, the manufacturers and their staff, raw materials suppliers, transporters, distributors/stockists, retailers and so many hidden interests, have all not come into the picture. When the public ultimately get this "2-rupee" piece it price will be not less than Rs.20/- apiece if not more. Be ready we can go another ride. Atomic energy was supposed to be the cheapest, now do not we prefer the bomb itself to be dropped on us!
