How do pariharas work?

Not open for further replies.
Pariharams included. We were taught in logic class - the statement 'if madame curie was not born, radium would not have been discovered' is false as someone else would have discovered it. So is doing pariharam. All actions and activities collectively contribute to final outcome. Spiritual, mental and physical efforts all play a part. As it was said in another thread that kindness cures. And such a statement is scientific because the reporter says so.

If doing homam mentally is known, guys won't be going in search of naboodiris /sAstrigaLs. :)

After nearly two years, that boy got married to a nice girl through horoscope matching!

So ..... எது எது எப்போ எப்போ எப்படி எப்படி நடக்கணுமோ, அது அது அப்போ அப்போ அப்படி அப்படி நடக்கும்!

(edhu edhu eppO eppO eppadi eppadi nadakkaNumO, adhu adhu appO appO appadi appadi nadakkum!)

I believe neither in parihara nor karma theories.

no sense in wasting time ,money or energy in such things .

more worth while in developing a scientific temper , coming to grips with the issues involved when faced with a problem and work for a resolution based on facts and

figures.

karma is the lament of a non performer who has given up in life who accepts without a fight what is happening to him .

well said

If there are rich family members doing nothing, they will do all such things..
............................................ futile mental actvity, better to run in the beach and improve physique

Dear Sandhya,

Running in the beach might improve physique. But will it find match for the son / daughter?

Most parihArams are done to get a good matrimonial alliance!

God is supposed to be 'immensely merciful' and given that, if someone prays to the ishta-devata with full faith and devotion each day without fail, shouldn't it rectify the solution? This pertains to personal effort, faith and devotion and not really paying outsiders who will do pariharam for us (I doubt if such things work).

When I was unmarried, my family was in neck-deep problems, I was even doubtful of getting married, if at all. So I started praying at full vigor -- I recited Sri Narayana Ashtakshari mantra 'Om Namo Narayanaya Namaha' non-stop within my mind 24 * 7 for a full 1-yr. Then suddenly I met my husband and our marriage took place. I still believe it was my prayer that gave me good marriage.

If you visit Shri. A.M.Rajagopalan's page at Kumudam Jyotidam, you can see many, many people writing to him that doing the parihara he gave them worked very well and that they are in a better situation. He usually advices people to light lamp on a specific day of the week (the day denoting the afflicted planet) consecutively for 1 yr or so.. simple, doable pariharas. I've been impressed with his seva, and thus my curiosity was borne out of it.

Raji ji, thanks for the link, I will look into it.
I am a regular reader of Kumudam jyotidam.

his recommendations for those in distress , appeal to my sense of humour . lol

The advice in personal column always end with suggestion to go to some temple or the other to please some god or the other every week depending on the planet

whose dosha ,he thinks you have. he suggests lighting ghee lamps there every week for periods ranging from three months to a year depending on how much to

penalise you for dosha you have.lol

Its a great con game. all gullible fall for it.

JRji I pity you . you are educated . How could you do this?

IMHO , you might have better chances of finding a match running on the beach for oneself [ many suitors look for matches at most beaches.lol]

than doing any pariharam at some temples[ I do not know, in tamil films ,matches are found in temples also].

by the way , I came across a suggestion from a family suggesting boy meet girl in some temple instead f a formal girl "seeing "ceremony in home of girl.

My relative in desperation is making his son meet girl with intent of marriage at a temple. I thought it was stupid.

Our modern girls prefer Coffee Day outlets instead

Whether we believe in Homa or not..as Hindus when we die..our body becomes fuel for the Homa of Death.

You missed the point, Sir!

There is a possibility of 'Deiveegak kAdhal' ONLY in temples!

The foolishness part of it is that both boy and the girl are working in chennai .

Both need to go to go madurai meenakshi temple near girls parents home to meet each other.

stupid in extreme , I thought.

well this is the price boys have to pay in case of traditional way of doing things.

lucky I am not the boy or the parent of the boy.

I am amazed this is happening in 21st century in our tamilnadu.

Sorry, Krish, I only pity your kind self :).

Any pariharas will work with god. God is of immense mercy and power. The mighty Garuda's one swing of his wings to shed off a feather is supposed to get a retrograde planet in the jataka straight! If Garuda himself can do this much, then imagine how much the Lord can do! coming to pariharas, there is no right or wrong. Anything done with shradda over a time period WILL bear fruits, like my recitation of Sriman Narayana Ashtakshari. It gives mental satisfaction to people to learn the pariharas from a renowned Jyotishi such as shri AMR and this gives them innate faith and trust in what they are planning to do, which keeps them going. That's all the psychology behind it. As they do it, their own effort/shradda and time put into it makes the practice come alive and bear fruits. It is all very good it is carried on the day of the afflicted planet. Shri AMR is indeed doing great seva.

JRji
You would not believe it

I once in this forum to put AMRs approach to test, read someones horoscope he had sent me and sent the person a pariharam talking about evil effect of some planet -

rahu

I thinK and advised him to go to rahu sthalam near kumbakonam. to remove the ill effects by lighting lamps .

he took it seriously and thanked me and promised to do the needful .

faith is like that .

anyone gullible can be taken for a ride.

there are lot of jyothishis like that .

some would recommend stones to wear which they would supply for a price.

others would offer to visit your place and do puja to remove the ill effects of some planet or other.

these are meant to take the gullible for a ride.

if it gives you relief , excellent.best of luck

I know it was not addressed to me. I do not believe in Astrology. I am a follower of Advaita or Kabir panthy. I also strongly believe in Karma theory.

If God indeed tried to help by circumventing Karma, then it would be like the supreme court judge taking bribe to "help" a criminal. Prayers and repentance are good for the soul of the individual, nothing more nothing less. So no pariharm will ever work. Like Krishji said:

I strongly believe in karma theory and 'avan indRi OraNuvum asaiyAdhu!'

Whether we do parihArams or not, events happen in the appointed time. The parihArams are to give peace of mind and the belief that

good time will come soon. Just like I think that my journey will be trouble-free if I wear a particular dress! :)

P.S: Common cold heals just in one week with medication but takes seven long days without that!

Believers in karma theory , I have come across believe in accepting the status quo and do nothing much for improving anything around them for their

betterment. they wait for something to miraculously happen to get them out of difficulties they are facing.

they also have feeling that they are under evil influence and go for pariharams,

karma and pariharam believers are available in plenty.I think it is a easy way out when faced with a difficulty or a problem.

not many are action oriented to scientifically , logically analyse and chart out a course of action to get out of a bad situation.

I suppose being a believers has its plus points.

sometimes , the issues that made us cling to karma and pariharam are temporary in nature and they disappear with time or we learn to cope with them by performing

pujas or going to temples or believing in some astrologer or faith healer

this is an approach to living which is time tested by our ancestors and passed on to us as a legacy to be cherished and guarded from upstarts and non believers.lol

Krish Sir has done a lot of good karma to lead a good life so far but refuses to believe that!

So..... he can talk anything about karma believers! :)

living like me requires a different mindset.

I face all the things everyone faces.

only I shrug off and make a determined bid using whatever little brain I have to act expeditiously on all issues confronting me

Out of 10 things I do if more than 5 succeed , I feel happy.

I mess up as much as the next man.

Since I am always on the move with more than a personal project at a time, that itself gives me good returns.

so no time to think of karma or pariharams.

People who believe in Karma are also generally intelligent and rational, to an equal extent. As the old saying goes, when there is disease one should adopt மணி, மந்திரம் and ஔஷதம் (maṇi, mantiram and auṣatam = auspicious gems, mantras or parihārams as also medicines), they believe. Whether everyone will follow all the three for even common cold is a different topic, however. But I have known very qualified allopathic doctors and surgeons suggesting to their patients or their bystanders to adopt the maṇi and mantiram also when they found that medications alone were not working as expected; good results have been known in many cases also.

Karma has its own independent force about which we just have no idea. When the Karma is very forceful (like a JCB) whatever we construct by way of parihārams becomes utterly useless; we then have to acknowledge defeat. In the rest of the cases, parihārams do have a role in reducing (lessening the vigour at least) of the ill-effects of one's bad karmas of the past. But results will be seen only if the parihārams are done properly by competent persons.

There are a few effective pariharas for Vaishnavas (which I am aware of because I am one). Such as reciting mantrarajapada stotram 12 times daily, reciting Shri. Hanuman Chalisa, etc. But as you said, Sangom ji, I too believe certain very heavy karmas cannot be avoided but some things like job situation/job loss, hostility in the workplace/bad boss, certain diseases, debt situation, can all be improved by pariharas.

Dear Mr Sangom

Without using Puranas and other stories is there a rational explanation as to how nature is keeping track of Karma accounts for all things? Or is this all taken in faith and belief by you
Thanks

Shri a-TB,

I believe (have no scientific proof to offer, obviously) that on death, the soul or Atma of every human dissolves in the Parabrahman (I am an advaitin.) but the Karmas which are outstanding, form a kind of "sheath" which some of our philosophical texts call as "Karma Sareera"; in simple terms, it is like a balance sheet of all the Karmas of that Karma Sareera right from origin. This Karma Sareera finds out a next birth in accordance with what would be the optimum choice for itself in the next life. How this choice is made, is not known. Some Tibetan Buddhists propose highly evolved Lamas working as controllers in the other world and directing the souls (they do not subscribe to the Karma Sareera concept.) into the most suitable next birth, etc. But since 'beyond death' is beyond human grasp, we will have to only imagine.

This is the reason, I believe, that Gita says "Karmanyeva adhikarasthe...". But in this system, every human soul will attain Parabrahman after each life and so there is no separate effort needed for the much talked about "Moksha". Still, the Karmas one person does will give shape to the Karma Sareera, and that will cause a new birth somewhere. If our actions are good, these new births will be enjoying in this world the results of the good deeds while those with bad Karmic balances will suffer. It is not the same soul or Atma which will enjoy/suffer but someone else somewhere. But if this truth be told, people will jolly well live as they want and end up making this world a worse place. Hence we have the Karma theory as we have.

Pariharas work based on two ideas :

(1) Each karma gives results according to 5 factors. This is elaborated in Gita 18th Chapt. This is especially so for kaamya karmas.

(2) There are the prescribed vaidika karmas. Lighting a lamp is a Vaidika karma. They work by purifying the antah karanam if performed without attachment to results.
*Yajno danam Tapaschaiva paavanaani maneeshinaam*

Such karma is mandatory for one who wishes to live in this *Prakrithi chakram*

I know pariharas work. But how?

Let us say, if someone had a bad karma to suffer a disease, they do pariharas and their affliction goes away.. But what happens to the pending bad karma? Will it return back in the next life?

Pariharam works because:

Guilt: Every religion puts this guilt on human beings, because of which they are scared of the consequence of some action. Guilt brings money and support to the person who claims to remove this (non existent) blot from our future.

Gullible people: The person believing in this imagined ailment or malady can spare this money, that the remover can get.

In the process people forget that ultimately they are responsible for all their action and the consequence of their action. They want some shortcut to get over their guilt.

This is universal in all human society. There is no documented proof of these kind of ritual in other animals. Lions and Wolfs do not do ritual to appease any gods before their hunt, human do.

As unpleasant as the reality may seem, it’s better to look truth straight in the eye. It makes life easier. I no longer have to have this constant fear that I am possibly being judged. Nor do I imagine what I want to think happens after death, as opposed to what evidence tells me.

Karmas are linked to the atma and not the body. If the atma dissolves in the Parabrahman, how it can be born again? Jivatma and paramatma are not same and are different. Jivatma takes a shareera to accumulate or dilute its past karma bundle, and if and when it does, it attains moksha.

Which philosophical text states that karmas form a sheath called 'karma shareera'. With this it seems sharrera is enough to live and mange karmas.
