[h=1]HP unveils a quad-core Android tablet…which costs only $100[/h] May 22, 2014 G.Kishore
With the Moto E, the Xiaomi MI Pad, the EE Eagle, it seems that the year 2014 will be the “Year of Cheap Devices”.
All manufacturers seem to be wanting to join in the fun. But, then HP jumps in and unveils a device at a price tag that most manufacturers fear to even touch (Yes, even the Moto E is higher at $129 ).
HP has unveiled the Slate 7 Plus with a price tag of $100. We won’t keep you waiting, we are spitting it out right away: This thing has got a Quad-Core processor. At that price point, quad core is something that really boosts it’s value.
The processor is clocked at 1Ghz and is of Allwinner make, so don’t expect it to beat something like the Snapdragon 800 (Or the 600 or the 400..You get the gist) at performance (Due to lower clockspeeds, slower and older CPU and GPU architectures, etc). However, we reckon (hope) that is sufficient for performing normal tasks without blood curdling lag.
It has 1GB SDRAM and 8GB of Internal Storage, expandable via MicroSD card to upto 32GB.
The screen measures diagonally at 7 inches with a resolution of 1024*600 pixels, which is a bit low in our opinion; However, at that price point, you can’t really argue. But on the plus side,, the screen is IPS (In Plane Switching) which means you can hope for great color reproduction and great viewing angles.
The software is dated, at Android 4.2.2 Jellybean, 2 versions behind the latest, Android 4.4.2 Kitkat. But at least it is Jellybean, we have seen tablets at that price having ICS (Ice Cream Sandwich) and even Gingerbread.
The connectivity options are fairly standard with WiFi bgn and Bluetooth 4.0.
HP reckons that the 2800 mAh battery will last for 5 hours of standard usage, which isn’t good at all.
What is surprising is that HP has managed to include two cameras at that price (But both are terrible): One is 2MP and the front one is 0.3MP.
