IBM deploys the power of Watson for Cooking

June 30, 2014 amazingtechie

IBM declares that Watson supercomputer deploys cognitive technology that processes information more like a human than a computer—by understanding natural language, generating hypotheses based on evidence and learning as it goes.
You may remember Watson as the clever Artificial Intelligence Concept that won Jeopardy and triumphed over lowly mortals in 2010.

But can it be used to put together a fabulous menu that fits our needs without burning a hole in your pocket by developing cutting edge scrumptious cuisine that tingles our taste buds?

And IBM has gone ahead and done just that. The Big Blue has collaborated with Bon Appetit, to make an app called “Chef Watson with Bon Appetit”.

Earlier, IBM has attempted in collaboration with New York Institute of Culinary Education which has provided 30000 recipes to IBM along with 3 main variables –geographic region, type (salad, soup, stew etc) and the main constituents. This formed the basis for the Watson computer to use its innate intelligence to churn out yummy food suiting your palate.

Some of the dishes created by Watson Earlier:

Vietnamese Apple Kebab by Watson + Michael Laiskonis

Here’s how it will work. Watson already has the 9000 recipes in memory to start with. It will then take a variety of data , including data about ideal ingredient pairings, cooking styles, dishes and more, from Bon Appetit’s large repertoire of cooking knowledge. Using these data and also the recipes in memory, Watson will create interesting dishes appealing to people using combinations of different ingredients.

Will it be a foodie’s dream come true? That is the million dollar question. It is an exciting concept, for sure and it represents how much Artificial Intelligence has achieved. But will all this development ultimately lead to a robot-controlled future?
