CHENNAI: A student of the Indian Institute of Technology-Madras (IIT-M) was found hanging from the ceiling fan of his hostel room this morning. Authorities suspect it could be a case of suicide. If so, this would be the second on-campus suicide by a student of the prestigious institution in a month.
The student's body was found hanging in his room in Ganga Hostel on the sprawling IIT-M campus. No suicide note was found, and the cause of death is yet to be ascertained.
He has been identified by the IIT-M management as a student of the pre-final-year class of dual-degree Electrical Engineering, hailing from Kollam, in Kerala. A statement from IIT-M director Bhaskar Ramamurthi said the institution is providing full support to the police in the investigation.
"At this time, we have no indication of the reason for death. The student's parents are being informed. The Institute offers its heartfelt condolences to the student's family and near and dear ones for the unfortunate and devastating loss," read the statement.
On September 23, an M Tech student from Andhra Pradesh had been found hanging in his room.
