IIT Madras professor suspended for sexual harassment

The research scholar had complained that the professor, with whom she had gone to Poland for a science conference in September this year, asked her to sleep in his hotel room ( Justice Ganguly did the same ). The student alleged she left the hotel after the professor tried to force himself on her at night ( Tarun Tejpal did the same ) .

This incident is a mixture of Tarun Tejpal and Justice Ganguly . Good that IIT had an internal mechanism to address this problem and good the student made use of this internal mechanism to register her complaint .

I get the ominous feeling that these accusations, ar at least all of these, are not necessarily true. Women have been "empowered" contrary to the ancient traditions of this country by a set of utterly foolish males and now all the males in the future will have to rue that. This is just a 'sample' of the experience which this country will have to face for aping everything that the westerner says is good. Our ancients held that கொலையும் செய்வாள் பத்தினி, let us not lose sight of that wise saying.

What I am very surprised is that the members of this forum who deride even the translations, commentaries of our scriptures by western people are either silent or are supporting these so-called women's liberation, Strange!

I think what we need is MSY as our next PM.

Sir,

Incident happened in September. Complaint filed. The Professor seems to have been suspendedand evicted from his official quarters on the campus following a proven chargeof sexual harassment. Evicting the Professor fromquarters is not a punishment, it is only denial of a facility already extended. And suspension is also not a punishment, bcos he may be reinstated shortly. Whatis going to be the outcome of the internal mechanism? What is the punishment going to be awardedfor a proven charge?
It is reported in
The New Indian Express that the actionproposed against the professor was still unclear.

IMHO punishment against such sexual harassment should be more stringent.

Sexual harassment cases are coming up in droves, so to say. Here is another one.

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/...ice-to-AMU-professor/articleshow/27548958.cms

Please note the charge of conspiracy alleged by the charged professor's family. I feel that women will and can be used to level sexual harassment charges against almost any male in working life; this is a new tool to eliminate seniors, peers who may overtake, etc., in today's dog-eat-dog way of life.

Males should beware and be chary of being 'gallant knights' before any woman except their mother, wife and sisters.

The problems are with the men. They think the women is ever ready and willing for a game. You have to just touch her and she will just melt. Stupid old men who can keep neither their minds nor the organs under control. It is good that women come forward to tell the dirty story and get these stupid guys hanged by their collars. I welcome the change in attitudes.

I have seen many oldies who take advantage of their age and touch girls and young women! Even a dad does not hug his grown up

daughter in our culture. The major problem is getting proof of harassment! May be fix a camera in the studs of girls? :spy:

Yes, this is what these perverts are banking on, further, our Indian society is ever ready to blame the girl, did she ask for it, he was only touching her head why is she overreacting, he is such an accomplished man, etc., etc. Our society has erred in favor of the perverts for ever so long it is time we err in favor of the victims ....

I do not know what kind of travel services are offered by IIT/M administration.
It is criminal of a Professor to ask any student (especially member of opposite sex) to share the same hotel room.
If any of this is proved true I hope an example is made out of this 'Professor'

If there was no oversight with the travel set up, IIT/M as an entity is setting up for issues of this kind that may further damage their reputation.

In this case Police can take up the case suo motu...The Professor will then soon be behind bars if found guilty..The police should not waste time in this and not wait for FIR

Dear Shri Gane,

It was our ancient bharatiya custom that even the father would not touch his daughter after she attains puberty, except on ceremonial occasion like "kanyaadaan" and this too is not prevalent except among some castes/communities in the southern states. No woman was supposed to stand face-to-face with any male except her husband. If the archives of this forum is searched it will be found that many of the so-called "progressive"males of this forum (many with one leg in the grave!) arguing for women's liberation, their equality, hugging and kissing as physical expressions of (non-sexual) love & affection, and so on.

And when a charge against some male professor comes up, we are forgetting everything and calling for his blood, virtually; are we not behaving like "headless chickens" and busy trying to prove our "progressive" identity? Should we be so foolish?

After passing of anti molestation bill ,the skeletons in the cupboard are tumbling out. starting with tejpal, followed by ganguly and now IIT
professor.,one rajasthan minister, godmen Asaram and son.It is tip of the iceberg .I personally know of Head of Dept in CEG guindy.who had a weakness for ladies and used to make vulgar snide remarks in class while teachimg . Girls in the dept would not go to his office alone besides warning new entrant girls about him. Though the whole dept for a decade from 2001 knew about this, no one helped the girls. If it had been north india he would have been lynched.Even now it is a open secret . many can recount bad experiences of girls who had to keep quiet as sessional marks and degree was at stake. now ladies can feel empowered

Dear Shri Sangom,

You are right. One needs to have a balanced view. In an era of women's liberation, the greater privileges accorded to women may make us act in a biased way. But if one is a real culprit he should be punished in such a way that an example is set to deter future hardships to women. The important thing is to not to have a rush of blood at just every charge.

Dear RR ji,

Yes I agree..the problem is mostly with oldies from all walks of life including Doctors!...they try be touchy touchy and just becos of their age we wonder 'was it a normal touch or was is not?" These guys know they can get away becos of their age and the respect we are forced to give them.

But one oldie got it once from me during a medical meet..cos the oldie was seated near me and he was always dropping his pen on the floor and when he bent down to take it..his hands would sort of lightly brush my legs...1st time I thought may be it was an accident..but when it became more than once when he tried for the 3rd time I stepped on his hands with my high heels and I said 'Oh sorry doc..I did not see you bending down to take your pen"

Shri Sangomji,

We live in a free for all society..If we are ready to embrace modernity in toto we need to face the consequences that it entails.

If what you say is followed in letter and spirit, then the girl should not have ventured out with the Professor on a tour... But with the tour on but not allowing the girl student a separate room is the second part of the tragedy

Also came to know that there is no code of conduct or guide for its faculty and students regarding the Do's and Don'ts to handle such situations.

IIT Madras has finally woken to the menace that is threatening its standing!

Code of conduct soon for pupils, faculty at IIT-M - The Hindu

Dear Shri Gane,

You are right... we live in a "free for all" society, but let the brawl be limited to the scene proper and not transmitted all over.

I may sound very rude and crude and tribal. Yet, I seriously doubt whether a Professor with a (brahmin-sounding) name of Ramamoorthy and being employed in a very prestigious institution like IITM would have been foolish enough to vent his sexual outburst once he was in some other country and knew full well that the girl also would return to India and not be vanishing into nothingness after the seminar in Sweden.

What I am trying to suggest is that just as section 498 (a) of the IPC is found to be rampantly misused now, we cannot rule our the possibility of this 'sexual harassment' provisions also being misused. My suggestion, therefore, is let us not jump the gun, but wait atleast till we come to know the statements of both parties, and let us not like zombies programmed, bay for the blood of any male against whom a female brings up a charge of sexual harassment.

Dear Shri Sangom,

The Professor is an erotomaniac...Similar stories about him (with another non staff within campus had also appeared in the press...Can call him a predator..Let him be of any caste...Earlier such persons were getting away..Now they cannot..They better watch out for the signs of their weakness and take adequate precautions

As far as sense is considered when you are in heat, do you care for your other senses..His female companion has literally blinded him to the perils

I will still (i.e., despite the details you have about that professor) say that no useful purpose will be served by we people crying hoarse for that Professor being punished just on hearing that a certain woman has alleged sexual harassment by him. Do we want some certificate from somewhere that we tbf members are unadulterated champions of women's causes?

I am more bothered that we should not be construed as disinterested or apathetic when a serious allegation is made!
