Sir,

I too feel proud to be an Indian.

No doubt, we are marching ahead

With

1) Large number of communities
2 )Large number of languages
3)Different Religions: i.e. Hindu, Islam, Christianity, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, etc
4)Large number of political parties, and
5)Growing population

We are showing progress in number of fields which is our uniqueness.

Let us emulate positive things and grow rich.

Vande Mataram.

With regards:)

P.S: Of course, we have problems too, being attended at higher levels
Sir,
I want to add 'larger number of States'.
On population the politicians, policy makers do not seem to realise the threat.
Higer population will erode the wealth of the nation. It will leave people with lesser availability of resources per person.Water problem in cities is one example. More ame more houses lesser share of water. It is a real concern. Individuals realising the threat decide on smaller families. But no large scale move, emt initiated by Govts.

There is no need to abandon western culture. Let us learn our native culture. Unfortunately many read scriptures from west sources, often biased. There are many hindus strongly rooted in sanatana dharma values, but successful in so called modern life too.

With the west slowly appropriating our knowledge systems, yoga, meditation, vedanta, holistic balanced living, more may follow. We have the lead to be used judiciously.

Real independence is achieved only when we also break free from the western values and ideals, which we acquired earlier because of the British influence and now because of the American influence. Also we need to realize that there is enough indigenous knowledge and personnel that can offer ingenious solutions to our problems.

But I agree we cannot totally abandon all that is alien because of a global culture emerging but let us wear it only as our appearance and let our own values act as the soul.

Sir,

Pranams,

I agree with you. We have large number of States including Union Territories. The growth of population is a threatening thing as you said. with higher birth rate, higher fertility rate and with average life expectancy of Indian increasing considerably due to medical advancement. And there is surplus births over deaths leading our country to second in the world with highest population.

The Government on their part are implemening birth control measures. Few being, advertisements of using contraceptives and awareness compaigns. Sterlization is also being done in Hospitals, but this may not enough, when considering the volume of increase. As you said there is no large scale movement I presume.

How far effectively we are going to halt the population growth remains to be seen.

But, on the other side,

You may be aware that nowadays, couple decide not to have kids immediately after marriage and the present trend is staying childless for some time though there is a stigma attached with this that the couple being lebelled as self-fesh and some are even considered as impotant. The trend being, they prefer to have one kid, one alone. Certain families prefer to limit the size with two kids considering the increase in the cost of living.

Intricacies of population theory.....?

With regards:)

Since my earlier contributions to this thread were in Tamil, which some of the members might not be able to follow, I want to give my views in English. Sorry for the long post.

Though there is a view that people have been living in India since like 5000 B.C. or probably even way before that, India was ‘discovered’ in 1498. Since then India was constantly under the hold of various foreign groups like the Dutch, Moghuls and lastly the British, which spanned right into 20[SUP]th[/SUP] century. What is the reason? Disunity? Greed? Selfish reasons of individuals/communities? We are aware of traitors inside the country both in Moghul rule and British rule.

Let us look at the post-1947 situation. Rulers of princely states were quite unwilling to form a united India. History tells us the difficulties faced by the likes of Sardar Vallababhai Patel in forming the Indian Union. What is the reason for such reluctance on the part of the then rulers? Selfishness. ‘I before the country’. The first thing ‘free India’ did was to assassinate the Father of the Nation!

Gandhi suggested dissolution of Congress. But what happened? Subsequent groups want to cash on the ‘brand’. Ironically today “Indian’ National Congress is headed by an Italian!!

Let us travel further from 1950. There has been a periodical and methodical deterioration of values among the rulers. Politics is synonymous with corruption. Bureaucracy not only deteriorated in the quality of administration but also started following their political bosses in corruption. Are we then just going to blame it on politicians and bureaucrats? What about the so-called ‘Aam aadmi’? We do not care for the rules. We do not care for the environment. We do not care for the country in any way. One group of people feels happy on Independence Day for they got a holiday while another group feels sad that the liquor shops are (officially) closed on that day. How many of the ordinary Indian citizens know about our freedom fighters or for that matter Indian history? Are we going to say, “yatha raja; tathaa prajaa”? Are we going to blame illiteracy? Why is India still the home for the largest number of poor people in the world?

Life in Metros is different. A person living in a remote village in Tamil Nadu does not enjoy even 50% of the facilities available in Chennai. And a person living in the North Eastern (NE) province of the country does not enjoy what even a rural citizen in the prosperous Southern or Western part of the country enjoys. Independence Day and Republic Day are treated with contempt in most parts of NE. They observe ‘bandh’ on these days. How could this happen? Are we going to blame it on our neighbouring countries?

Visionary poet Subramanya Bharathi sang, “let us rejoice that we have obtained freedom” even before India was granted independence. In the same verse, he mentioned, “it is now confirmed that we are all equal”. But what is the reality today? We are not equal anywhere – right from birth to death or even in front of God! Tamil poetess Avvayar said, “There are only two castes” and she implied men and women. But today also there are only two castes – the one who has money and the one who does not have it. Shame….

Lastly, let me quote Gandhi.
“There are Seven Deadly Social Sins:
Politics without principle.
Wealth without work.
Commerce without morality.

Pleasure without conscience.

Education without character.

Science without humility.

Worship without sacrifice.”
The members can measure today’s situation in the light of the above quote.

All said and done, I, as an Individual, would always love India and would always strive for its growth and prosperity. I am not going to be complacent with our progress here and there and now and then. I would keep my country in high esteem. I would spread that to my circle of influence. I am not going to be deterred by the ugly environment. Mera Bharath Mahan. Jai Hind.

If each one of us execute our work/duties conscientiously, India will be a better place to live!

from a facebook posting who inturn received this as an sms :)

A received SMS -
For the first time in history, NECESSITY, COMFORT & LUXURY are available at same price in India.
Onion - 75.00
Petrol - 75.00
Beer - 75.00

in 1975 europe, a bottle of wine in france was a franc, a bottle of water 2 francs ;) dont know about now.

except i was in frankfurt airpor about 8 years ago, an indian student on his way to usa for study was thirsty and wanted to buy a bottle of water - 2.5 euro - he converted it into rupees, went to the bathroom, and drank water from there. the bathroom, in frankfurt, was cleaner than most bathrooms i have seen in india, and the water drinkable too.

what if attlee did not divide india

here is a musing by minu's son, zareer masani. having read it, i dont agree with the article. but vgane will be pleased. :)

and an equally delightful article about zareer himself, which old timers like me might enjoy

zareer, his mom dad and apartment

Kunjuppu Sir,

Zareer Masani's article is glossing over the fact that partition was equally an act of geo-political hedging by the Imperial Brits in particular and anglo saxons in general. The great game got a new lease of life as cold war. Partition was inevitable. To be honest, despite the fact that our family lost land, I personally think partition was a good thing to have happened to us hindus.

Sorry for my nostalgia.

This song is dedicated to Delhi6.

Thanks. Storms are again brewing on economic front. Hope we tide over.

India has completed 66 years of Independence ...We are celebrating the 67th Independence day on 15th August 2013..There will be parades and pageants celebrating the occasion..There will be flag hoisting ceremonies and cultural events galore!

We have been freed from foreign yoke...India was divided on religious lines in 1947 by the British which was accepted by the powers that be at that time

India however gets weakened by separatist and terrorist organizations (some homegrown & others from across the border)

We are not on friendly terms with our neighbours be it China or Pakistan

We still have a third of the world's poor..

But there are lots of positives

We are probably the 3rd largest economy in the world

We have made rapid strides in defence, agriculture, manufacturing and services

My wish is that if our borders can be redrawn and India, Pakistan and Bangladesh can become one country then no one can challenge us in the world!

I feel proud to be an Indian! Vande Mataram!

What are your thoughts and what is your wish!

Vgane Sir,

Even I wish that borders are redrawn but I do not want 300 million yahoos as my countrymen. Will be demographic suicide for us(definitely for hindus). Pakistan is on its way to balkanisation. With it one of the 3 major strategic constraints will come to an end. I will be happy with a balkanised Pakistan and a land deal with Bangladesh.

I missed Vgane's original post. I would not want to dilute the Hindu Majority.

OMG! What a suspense being built ..........

Imagination ran riot for one split second and I thought of 'Morargin' instead of water!! :D

When Sri. Morarji declared to this world about his own 'drug', my Sis V R mam was the one who gave the name

as Morar'gin'. I have written once about this in our forum. So Kunjuppu Sir's credit - redirected to my dear Sis!

In UAE water is precious commodity...To spend 1.5 Dirhams (approx Rs 25) for 0.5 Liters is a big money..I used to carry the free water available from the Hotel where I stayed..

We have a habit of converting everything in Rs...We are very frugal whereever we go & that is the reason for high savings as a country

We used to be is more like it.
Today the youngster are on spending binge. India too has resorted to credit cards. They drink soda (may be stronger than that), rather than water from the tap. People above 50 years of age may have a different outlook, then again TB are frugal and minimalist. Across the country in urban centers consumerism is rampant. I am not saying it is good or bad, but that is the new normal.

http://www.firstpost.com/economy/savings-rate-to-dip-to-30-in-2012-13-india-ratings-617765.html
India Ratings today warned that the national savings rate will slip further to 30 percent or so this fiscal, from 30.8 percent of the GDP last fiscal, if the advance estimates of national income is anything to go by.

In an economy where inflation is at 11% and savings account rate is 4%, Is it worth saving? So savings is not necessarily warranted.
In India you save in lieu of Insurance (you need cash for medical, or corruption), Dowry etc.

In us the rate of Inflation and Savings rate is both infinitesimal at the present time

Akanda Bharat !! India, Pakistan and Bangladesh merged together and become one country. Really a long term vision - impossible to realize. What is needed atleast is unity among the neighbouring countries. More than 30% of budget goes to defence expenditure is certainly not a likable situation.

We can express our views only in this forum - in reality we are unable to take any further steps towards this. It is pity but let us also accept that it is true.

Long Live India, that is Bharat, and Indians.

Six decades of planning and unplanned execution of plans have attempted to change the landscapes of India. Freedom ensured integration. Partition was not executed neatly. Nehru laid foundations for all round development and the developments made India stronger at its base. More people took opportunity and have progressed. Many are still rooted in the past. Only our politicians have not progressed - mentally; in fact they have deteriorated. We have made progress in social welfare, education , industrial infrastructure, atomic energy, defence, space technology and so on. Green and White Revolutions are milestones in our road to progress. The infrastructure we have laid is the spring board for further progress.

As said before, our administrators, politicians and industrialists and businessmen have not at all improved. They have still the mindset of Licence Raj. At best our business class is known for acquisitions of dying units here or elsewhere. They do not have the scientific temper. They cannot utilize the budding experts in the field of technology. Independence and progress has created large pools of technocrats, engineers and entrepreneurs which cry out for recognition and opportunities with the result a good number of them have left our shores. They are welcome everywhere. Why? Because we have bad politicians and administrators and suspecting industrialists/businessmen. I am sorry to say that nepotism, favouritism and parochialism have placed unsuitable hands at wrong places to give meaning to “square pegs in round holes”. MNCs here are no exception to this malady. This helps nipping the buds before blossoming. Glamour has gone sky high.

In spite of all progress, we are short of electricity, drinking water, healthcare centres, etc. Population has increased which has also allowed a few more people to become that arrogant rich. But the poor people’s number is growing faster than the very population. Some organisations, welfare schemes , poverty alleviation programme, are all eyewash; they are political gimmicks.
Globalization and liberalization has not helped India or Indians. It has made matters worse. The idea has released Indians from the clutches of desi bania to international bania. From political freedom we have jumped into economic slavery. Previously our economy was supposed to be resilient. After G&L it has become reactive. The US’ policy affects. If the US President purrs, we have vibrations. OPEC impacts massively your day to day life. Our liberal policies towards others are well indulged by others. We consider our neighbours except China, are our strength. But they think otherwise; it is not our fault. Christianity is affected by Islam and vice versa. But India is affected by both – one culturally and other socially.

Linguistic states were formed to allow all to develop individually. All Indian languages are dying including Hindi. This being the case, there is other side. Linguistic intolerance is growing alarmingly. We are Indians only on R-Day, D-Day or any other day of calamity or disturbance. Already about 200 dialects have disappeared. Heritage preservation is going on side by side.

Well, nothing is lost. If our political system is cleaned out and replaced by devoted INDIANS we have scope for flawless development because our people are the ideal group in the world. Let us wait for the dawn, and dawn it will, sooner or later. This is my impression of India today.
