India is making a massive commitment to the solar industry and it may be poised to have the world's largest solar power plant with plans for a 750 MW project. India's "ultra mega solar power plants" are part of a 25 GW plant to make the country a solar powerhouse. For some perspective, that's enough solar energy to power the equivalent of 4.1 million U.S. homes, and about half of the solar expected to be installed in all of 2014, so the opportunity for the industry is massive.

Solar companies are clamoring to get into the booming market and SunEdison has already signed a 5 GW memorandum of understanding to develop projects in the State of Rajasthan. What's interesting is that India is going against the trends of the rest of the world, who are building smaller projects closer to demand sources.

Better to have both, large and small. In DD Pothigai I saw a farmer running a small pump with solar panel. He can run from 9 to 5 in the day and for about 300 days in a year.

If each building has a solar panel we will become like Germany where over 50% of energy is produced by solar

most believe small is beautiful.

we need to decentralise power production and take it to village commuities saving on transmission costs and losses.

our planners can never get rid of centralising everything including planning and the thought only

they are capable of solving every issue.they have thought of power plants near coal mines or

water falls[hydro] . even with unconventional sources like solar or wind they think large size.

village communities in far off places would do well to have community size plants with single

phase supply to feed small and medium sized villages.some companies are trying for the rural markets with solar based power for small homes catering to lighting, one fan and operating pump for water. when there are 6-8 hr breakdown of conventional power, these types of initiatives can get good results . also for geographically cut off communities , it can be a godsend
