Indian couples seek ‘white’ donors for fair kids

In May, a Delhi-based couple in their forties had twins through a surrogate mother, who carried an embryo created from the husband’s sperm and eggs from a ‘white’ donor.

The couple wanted a donor with ‘very fair’ skin, but as someone with such special physical attributes was not available on Indian databases, the couple decided to look abroad for Caucasian or ‘white’ egg donors.

Through a foreign agency, the couple contacted a young unmarried woman from the West, who came to a Mumbai clinic and donated her eggs. She was paid about Rs. 8 lakh — a package that included cost of her stay, food and travel. The fertilized embryo was then transferred to an Indian surrogate who delivered the baby.

“The husband is very fair and they wanted to have a fair child. We could not get an egg donor who could match the husband’s complexion and, hence, a Caucasian donor was selected,” said Dr Duru Shah, who runs a private clinic at Peddar Road. “The donor is a student who wanted to fund her nursing course and so agreed.”

According to infertility experts, easily accessible websites and donor-finding agencies have brought foreign sperm and egg donors just a click away from Indian couples.

Nothing wrong with what they have done - this is a welcome step in science and would definitely light up homes, as well as hearts.

But it could also be that the white girl could have the "black" (or should I say "less-white") DNA in her if one of her ancestors had married a person of African, or perhaps Indian, or even Mexican, origin? Perhaps there is a way of finding out? (I am lazy to google it)

I dont think skin color is the issue here...may be the couple think that Causcasian looks are good looks..cos you see if color was the only criteria they could have opted for Chinese or Japanese donor too..some Chinese and Japanese have very very fair skin too(not all are yellow hued).

But with Chinese and Japanese donor the baby born might not have the classical aquiline nose and double eye lids eyes looks the couple is looking for..so I guess they preferred a white.

Why didnt they think of a Kashmiri donor? They are very fair too.

So you see couples have a fix notion of beauty..but as long they are happy that should be fine.

As per the doctor

Dr. Reneka,
In Indian term Gori Chamadi is reserved for Caucasian. Chinese and japanese are not in contention.
