Indian men spend a mere 19 minutes a day on housework

A recent survey by Organization for Economic co-operation and Development (OECD) says that an average Indian man has the dubious distinction of spending all of 19 minutes a day on routine housework, among the lowest in the world.

Three other Asian nations scored low on the index — Japanese (24), Korean (21) and Chinese (48). So where can you find a man who does housework? In Slovenia where men spent 114 minutes a day on unpaid housework, followed by Denmark and Estonia.

OECD study showed that Indian women spent a huge 298 minutes on routine housework such as cooking, laundry, pets, home maintenance etc. They spend 221 minutes on leisure which includes watching TV, sports, entertaining etc compared to 283 minutes for men.

So what do Indian men while away their time doing? The average Indian man spends more than 703 minutes (11 hours a day) on personal care — mostly sleeping, eating and drinking. "It is not just a cultural practice, it is a glorified cultural practice. Mothers celebrate the fact that their sons never lifted a finger at home," says Santosh Desai, a social commentator and columnist.

I join with her in folding the washed cloths.

Get up early morning , give Bournvita to Kids, help cut the Fruits for Lunch bag,

Play Sequence Card and board game

More importantly, i never criticize my wife cooking!!

........... More importantly, i never criticize my wife cooking!!
 Very good strategy P J Sir!

Otherwise, you may become the chief chef in your sweet home - designation will be given by Mrs. P J! :)
P.S: Strategy = a plan of action designed to achieve a long-term or overall aim. :decision:

Routine of most of the retired tambram mAmAs:

Get up at a convenient time in the morning.

Brush the teeth and pick up the morning newspaper - The Hindu / T O I.

Cover the face with that paper and wait for the mAmi to bring a cup of degree coffee!

Memorize all the pages, while mAmi is busy with all odd jobs, including managing the servant maid.

Have a bath (after mAmi yells to keep the paper down) and then do poojA if orthodox.

Eat breakfast or brunch and sit in front of the 'idiot box' (I B) to watch news / a 'match fixed' cricket!

Visits bank / ATM / post office (to collect interest) once in a month.

Lunch around 1 p.m, if morning breakfast is the routine!

Zzzzleep peacefully till he gets another cup of coffee at 4 p.m.

Rest of the time is spent either talking on phone / watching 'I B' again.

Some of them are addicted to a few soaps too!
Have early dinner and crash on the bed to go to Z-land again!

But, there are some mAmAs who walk on the roads to exhibit the shorts, T'shirt (with some U S univ name)

and shoes gifted by the son or daughter settled in the U S of A. Some drive to the beach and then jog / walk!

Except mAmAs active in our forum, others spend only a few minutes with PC to check mails that rarely arrive!

Routine of most of the retired tambram mAmAs:

Get up at a convenient time in the morning.

(This is as per Chanakya Needhi, Maamas follow them mediculously

Maami is supposed to get up early, go to bed late!!

After getting up, they should touch the foot of Maama and Pray for DHEERGA SUMANGALI Position so that Maamas will live longer than wife!!! )

Brush the teeth and pick up the morning newspaper - The Hindu / T O I.

(Also open TV, see News Channels to double check the news )

Cover the face with that paper and wait for the mAmi to bring a cup of degree coffee!

( also ask her to close the Kitchen Door so that Cooking Smell is not affecting maamas concentration )

Memorize all the pages, while mAmi is busy with all odd jobs, including managing the servant maid.

( If the Servant maid is young and good looking, have an eye on her all the time !! )

Have a bath (after mAmi yells to keep the paper down) and then do poojA if orthodox.

( one small KAKA KUKI , singing a favorite Cine song)

Eat breakfast or brunch and sit in front of the 'idiot box' (I B) to watch news / a 'match fixed' cricket!

( Eating breakfast , cursing maami preparing same Uppuma, Pongal, Idly , )

Visits bank / ATM / post office (to collect interest) once in a month.

( no need for going to Bank, verifies all mails, including some ***** photos sent by a friend , that is morning tonic )

Lunch around 1 p.m, if morning breakfast is the routine!

( Lunch with Female co staff, telling all lies about his ability to lift profit for the office )

Zzzzleep peacefully till he gets another cup of coffee at 4 p.m.

( Goes to Canteen and Gossib, )

Rest of the time is spent either talking on phone / watching 'I B' again.

( Talking to all new young female staff, as if helping them, and if possible touch her as if done unintentionally )

Some of them are addicted to a few soaps too!

(Take the young beautiful co staff to Canteen and buy her Coffee and go on and on talk to her looking at her )

Have early dinner and crash on the bed to go to Z-land again!

( Entering home , find fault that things are not kept in their own place )

But, there are some mAmAs who walk on the roads to exhibit the shorts, T'shirt (with some U S univ name)

( Maamas walk when Girls are running with their Track Suit )

and shoes gifted by the son or daughter settled in the U S of A. Some drive to the beach and then jog / walk!

What kind of work is considered housework? For that matter how much time women spends in doing housework in the affluent households in India, that too is 0.
I see it in my family the lady of the house manages the various servants, and family members, they too do not do any housework.

I think the OP is relevant only to India men in India. There are rarely any servants outside of India. So everybody has to do housework, regardless of gender.

biswa Sir

Please again read OP,

It has nothing to do with servant maids,

It is all about how Indian men help their spouse in household work..

We are our own servants outside of India. Both men and women have to do the houseworks.

Dear friends living abroad,

You all in our forum are good mAmAs and help in household chores! But I know a few Indian mAmAs living in the U S of A, who won't

even wash their plate after eating, just because the mAmi happens to be a home maker!! It is the mind set of a male, whether living

in India / abroad to help his wife in her work. :)

Dear Prasad Sir,

How many servants in one house? In Sing. Chennai servant, maids clean the floors (won't even care to see the dirt on skirting)

and vessels in most of the houses and very few wash the cloths. For each work we have to shell out roughly 800 bucks and

hence ladies have to do some household work. May be your are writing about stinking rich people living in boat club area!!

Come on P J Sir! Husband takes the role of a servant maid only when no maid comes to help the lady of the house! Got it??

One of my friends (very affluent) had a maid to cut vegetable and fold the cloths! Another one comes to clean the floor and
vessels. Cloths are washed by mAmA in the washing machine. Her job is only to cook food. :peace:

Raji Madam

You are wrong this time; Maamas do not help even washing the cloths; They are for foreign affairs like, School Admission, Putting kids in other Sports activities, Go with them to Swimming , soccer Classes, play with son Cricket,
Looking the Latest news about Internal and External, which local, central party are in the lead , Cinema news etc

in India we have a very old servant Maid, very slow, comes only one time.

In US, we wash our plates, night time Maami putting all the vessels in Dish washer.

Unfortunately even if one is ready to pay Servants/ Drivers are hard to get, but we can get Taxis.

Once in a Month professional Mexican cleaners come, clean the home, get about 100-120 US $ for about 3-4 hours work!!

I am writing what I observe, P J Sir! There are two mAmAs known to me, who machine wash cloths in Sing. Chennai.

One is my friend's husband and the other is my brother in law! When mAmis become sick and unable to do work, they

extend their helping hand! I know one mAmA who sets cooker for rice and dhal to help his wife. Their servant maid cuts

veg. and mAmi prepares sAmbAr + curry / one koottu only! Even the gas stove is cleaned by the mAmA!

We are our own servants outside of India. Both men and women have to do the houseworks.

Is doing house hold chores in US mandatory especially cleaning /mopping

I was told that as dust accumulation is almost nil, it is not mopped daily

May be once a month, an external janitor is hired for this who charges 100-150 bucks for a day's work!

Vessels are cleaned by Dish washer..

Only washing clothes and pressing is done on a weekly basis?

Gardening of course is a weekly chore!

As so much of dust accumulates in India, we have to do daily dusting, cleaning and mopping!

Also we are not comfortable with dish washer at all as we feel it does not remove the curry stain!

So Indians need more servants at home as fatigue and exertion will be higher without servants!

Dear Ganesh Sir,

Dust does not accumulate much in the houses in the U S of A. All the roads are clean and dust does not rise while vehicles run

on the roads. Most of the houses have either wooden floor / carpeted floor. Swiffer sweeper / vacuum cleaner is used. I used

to clean the floor when I was in Boston. Swiffer is very easy and hence my son bought me one and two packets of paper refills.

I use it whenever my servant maid takes off! Garden is maintained by men but once in a way, Mexicans are engaged for this job.

reading the statistics 19mins for men and 200plus for ladies for house work appears not correct
in india labour is cheap . it would insensible to make ladies of the house with high IQ to do house work which can be done by servants . unless they do housework by liking and choice and as physical exercise
. what comes in the way of using servants is their hygiene, poor dressing ,language and general incapacity for good housework and religious considerations. It requires some capacity to get raw servant maid and train them to do good house work.many housewives do not know how to delegate work and give them the freedom to perform. how to motivate servants and keep them is an art by itself.

the other issue is what will housewives do if the house work is taken away from them?housewives need to build a lot of interests, hobbies and use their knowledge to do good to society besides learning to be economically independant. well this has been my belief.
I have taken two old servant maids[ chosen by wife] ,tamils from nearby slums and trained one of them to clean vessels, house and trained them to operate washing machines and washing by hand cloths. which lose colour. The other has been trained to cook brahmin meals and taught hygiene and given good clothes to wear.I treat them as extended family and pay them more than market rates. they have been with me for years
.I have also a driver tamil who besides driving do all mens work like buying provisions, do all bank work etc [ what all I used to do before retirement.]. I only operate online to clear all bills and any bank transfers.
Though ,it costs money ,I prefer this. we as a couple are free to do our own things depending on our professional strength and generate money to support these servants -not much really if you compare with foreign payments for domestics.

our work home is managerial as far as domestics are concerned . morning 5-9 men evening 7-11 ladies. works fine .as our work hours are different and we do not run into each other

Yes, Your kitchen and bathrooms can not wait for the janitorial service (even if you can afford it).

I was told that as dust accumulation is almost nil, it is not mopped daily
I agree it is not like gust in India, but if you care to see there is a light dust that needs to be wiped down. We have to replace the dust filters in our central furnace every 3 months, and the old filter is dirty.

You are right about that.

Vessels are cleaned by Dish washer..
Dish washer is good cleaning lightly soiled dishes. It will not accommodate large pans. Secondly in Indian way of cooking on stovetop the pans have to be hand scrubbed. Secondly if it is a small load then it saves a lot of water by doing the dished by hand. You also have to clean dished in between meals, again generally those are hand washed. We the men and women of the house have to pick up the dishes and take it for washing either by hand or rinse and then load up the dishwasher.
Only washing clothes and pressing is done on a weekly basis?
Yes, for majority of the households of empty nesters that would be true. I remember the days our children were little we had to have daily laundry session.

Gardening of course is a weekly chore!
Depends on the size and interest. LOL

As so much of dust accumulates in India, we have to do daily dusting, cleaning and mopping!

That is debatable, it is supply and demand situation. I have seen the fatigue it causes in India in chasing the servants. Most of the households are held hostage to cheap(?) labor.
In one of the household we visited in our recent trip, I found that it was a full time job for the lady of the house to manage the staff on daily basis.
1. Live in servant (had a separate quarter) with cell phone and intercom.
2. The cook comes to prepare Lunch and Dinner.
3. The maid who comes for dishes and mopping.
4. The gardner.
5. Two drivers.
6. The guy who comes to wash the car.

I would be tired managing.
