I beg to disagree regarding feeling tired managing servants. in offices we oversee work of people by the dozen ,a few directly and many indirectly. It is best to have multi tasking servants 2or 3,one backing the other. in my place ,cook backs up maid who washes dishes and clothes. cook is backed by an alternate for days she takes leave . driver brings outsourced food if both maid and cook vanish together. and back up fails. if you trust servants ,they are more responsible than govt. employees. we rarely eat out.the servants are pretty punctual because of the freedom they enjoy and trust and responsibility we have put on them.of course if they land into trouble like medical or personal problems etc we have to help out.and pick up some tabs. we have to relate to them . there is hardly much management involved with servants

Dear Krish Sir,

Your wife is 'given and kept'! Confused??

It means 'koduththu vechchavaL'.

P.S: In Sing. Chennai, it is rather difficult to get a trust worthy servant!

No madam,my wife took raw hands and worked hard to teach the domestic to cook.we took badly made food for quite sometime which deterred anyone visiting our place for lunch or dinner.now we are getting the benefit of that work. also we do not do close supervision which deters servants.now we have developed good relationships as we have seen them through their bad times such as medical treatment and bereavement of husbands. so it is good times now.touch wood.

In old age husband and wife are supposed to help each other..I know a family where the husband gets up early before wife, gets the milk from Aavin booth, boils it, prepare coffee and cuts the vegetables...As wife is unwell he does that on a daily basis..Really commendable

Dear Ganesh Sir,

For those who do not entertain guests this seems to be an easy way out!
But, there is no gain without any loss, right?? :decision:

making good coffee is an art by itself
we require the right blend of plantation and arabica
milk-how good aavin is for coffee.it has also fat content varies from double toned to cream
also now we get electric filters so that men can easily take up this activity.
however getting milk requires walking to the booth and standing in queues. perhaps good to have it delivered.
veg cutting may not be advisable as there is a possibility of cutting the finger instead of vegetables
senior citizen need to get appropriate people as help. it is absolutely bad economics to try doing oneself routine household tasks.
one should not allow religion to come in the way of getting domestic help. good to take what one can get and train them.
most have wrong priorities and suffer when there is no need to do so.

Yummy food without anything in return?
Oh well! He takes the advantage of his old age! His wife was an excellent cook and he lost her a few years back.

So, all of us have a soft corner for him. He stays with us since house if comfy and food is good, though not very yummy!! :)

Whenever Ram's uncle visits Sing Chennai, he goes ONLY to the houses where he gets yummy food!

It may not be just him, I refuse to eat in houses where the cook can not make good food. I would go to good restaurant before visiting such household.
:yo:

Now I know why Prasad Sir did not take the risk of having anything in my sweet home, except a cup of coffee!!

As Brahmin Maami Cooks are hard to get many Brahmin families are training their Servant Maids in various side help activities like cutting vegetables, paying extra.

Some Brahmin couples residing in areas like Anna Nagar order Food items from Brahmin Caterers to supply food from Break Fast to night Dinner at their Door Step.

They rotate different Type of Stainless Carrier for this purpose.

But I protest, I did eat the snacks and did not eat the sweets (diabetic).

All over chennai and I am sure it must be available in other parts of TN. That is one tempting reason to spend vacation in TN.

in areas of brahmin concentration such as west mambalam, nanganallur ,triplicane, kilpauk etc such food facilities are availalble. most take the accompanying items such as sambar, rasam ,curries and leave out rice and curd which they make home. taste is suitable for senior citizens-less spicy and salt. rice if taken is of poor quality.mostly they get the cheapest veg in market for curries. due to economic reasons, the consumers take once per day and spread the items over lunch and dinner.
these senior citizens will compromise on their food quality and not on brahmin source for food. I have tried these in chennai and decided instead to opt for food from a north indian housewife living nearby who could give decent north veg food at my door step

You might be right. I have had occasions to try this food, I found it was good home made taste, the quality was far better than many restaurant food. When you are talking if north Indian food, what city you had in mind? I am not caste oriented, I am more quality and vegetarian oriented.

I was talking only of chennai.north indian veg food is not easily available. Due to north indian influx because of IT and MNC jobs, there are a few.in areas such as velachery and near IT parks where there is a concentration of north indians. and then it is mostly dinner due to work hours these guys keep.

hi

generally north indian food means PUNJABI STYLE FOOD...there are plenty home made foods available in beasant nagar/thiruvanmiur/

ECR/OMR AREAS..... i tried twice....its ok....there are some nice street food stall in TVMR beach road area....there is always

rush with youngesters guys/gals....basically IT/MNC workers in the evening time....nice food and cheaper too...

while there are housewives -poor brahmin ladies ready to cook -there are unable to face the challenge relating to distribution of food to homes of people. secondly they have no commercial sense and cannot price the meal properly . then maintaining quality is an issue.at best there are some small operators supplying to six to eight homes and cannot scale up. there is a huge business oppurtunity in home cooked foods . but maintaining the costs with high inflation can deter any one with ambition.

My parents live in Saligramam..We tried several combinations..Sometimes very hot, sometimes no Dhal in sambar, no green vegetables (mostly with Potato), our experience is bad.. quality is compromised..The caterers from West Mambalam do not come to Saligramam..We finally gave up..Do you have any suggestion

hi

sometimes...........QUALITY/PUNCTUALITY/COST AFFECTIVE ARE MAIN CONCERNS.........there are very good scope for brahmin

caterers......like home made foods by the mamis.........like SUYA UDHAVI KUZHU in tamil nadu..can possible with sincere

Chennai citizen would like everything free or nominal cost. Amma food joints are run by self help group ladies with govt given place for catering and subsidised cost of all inputs. they sell dishes for 1 to 3 rupees. depending on the item.
even home supplied food they would order for 2 units and consume for both lunch and dinner.
for anyone to supply food covering costs of end product and transport and reasonable quality is a challenge. it is possible if only done on a very large scale with a good distribution system. it also requires subsidy from govt . only some generous NGOs can organise it. in places like nanganallur, most local brahmins head for anjaneya temple for hot breakfast[pongal, puliyogare etc ] or free meal for over 100 people. in many homes near the temple ,housewives do not cook regularly.they live off the the temple, specially when husband is on tour/out of station and they do not feel like cooking for 1 person
people who do all this are not poor. it is just an attitude.they have been fed on a diet of freebies by the govt.most who get free food are house owners and those with kids working abroad. there are many middle class homes with BPL cards and collecting mixies ,grinders ,fans and the like.some have taken it from their maids paying them a pittance for it.chennai that way is a poor place to do food business
