[h=1]Indian shot dead in Kansas bar, shooter shouted 'get out of my country'[/h] February 24, 2017 08:14 IST

Adam Purinton, the alleged shooter who is a navy veteran, told a bartender in Clinton, Missouri, that he had killed two Middle Eastern persons.

An Indian engineer was killed and two others injured when an American man opened fire on them after allegedly yelling "get out of my country", with the local police calling it as a "possible hate crime".
Srinivas Kuchibhotla, 32, working at the Garmin headquarters in Olathe, was killed in the shooting on Wednesday night, while another Indian and his colleague Alok Madasani was critically injured and is battling for life at a local hospital.
One other identified as Ian Grillot was also injured in the shooting.
The accused, Adam Purinton, 51, was arrested on Thursday morning, five hours after the incident.
"It was a tragic and senseless act of violence," Olathe Police Chief Steven Menke told media persons.
According to local media reports, he yelled "get out of my country" at the Indians.
Purinton, a navy veteran, later reportedly told a bartender in Clinton, Missouri, where he was hiding that he killed two Middle Eastern persons, the Kansas City Star said.
The Indian Embassy has swung into action and two senior officials of the Indian Consulate in Houston have been sent to Kansas to assist the victims' families.
"Consul Ravindra Joshi and Vice Consul Harpal Singh rushed to Kansas to assist shooting victim. They are on their way and will reach by evening," the consulate said in a tweet.
The accused has been charged with premeditated first-degree murder and his bond has been set at $2 million.
According to Garmin, Kuchibhotla and Madasani worked in the company's aviation systems.
"We're saddened that two Garmin associates were involved in last night's (Wednesday night) incident, and we express our condolences to the family and friends of our co-workers involved. Garmin will have grievance counsellors on-site and available for its associates today and tomorrow," Garmin said in a statement.
The alleged hate crime has sent shocked waves among Indian-American and the Indian community across the United States.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of Srinivas Kuchibhotla," said Jay Kansara, director of Government Relations at Hindu American Foundation.
"We are also praying for a speedy recovery for the injured. We call upon the US Department of Justice and local law enforcement to investigate this murder as what it is, a hate crime.
"Anything less will be an injustice to the victims and their families," he said.
Kansara said that the HAF thanks those who put themselves at risk to stop this attack or to bring the perpetrator to justice.
"It is these acts of heroism in our communities that make America great," he said.
A GoFundMe page has also been set up to help raise funds for sending Kuchibhotla's remains to India.
The shooting incident comes at a time when hate crimes and acts of bigotry have risen notably during the recent months in America.
A Jewish cemetery was vandalised in St Louis, Missouri last week and the offices of Jewish civil society organisations have received bomb threats.
A man was removed from a Chicago-Houston flight after levelling racist taunts at Pakistani and Indian passengers.

May be such unfortunate killings reveals as to how racial ill feeling is still practiced in US which is considered to be the most powerful nation.

[h=1]Attack after attack on Indians in the US, worried parents urge children to come back home[/h]
A large chunk of the Indian techies in the US are from Telangana and Andhra, and parents are worried.

Another Indian techie from Telangana has lost his life to gun violence in the US, while a second man is injured in the same incident.

They were shot by a US Navy veteran, who allegedly yelled ‘get out of my country’ before firing bullets.

The death of Srinivas Kuchibhotla in Kansas, coming just days after the murder of Vamshi Reddy in California has left the parents of Indians living in the US very worried.

In Telangana, the fear is doubly high. The state sends roughly 1.3 lakh techies for education and work to the US every year, according to Telangana NRI Parents Association. For the families of these engineers, even a day without a phone call is a day filled with anxiety.

“My daughter is working in US. I have made it mandatory for her to call me twice a day after the recent incidents happening in US,” says Sreemala, a member of Telangana NRI Parents Association. “Last week, she forgot to call me at night and her phone was unreachable. I cannot explain my situation in words. I couldn’t sleep the whole night,” she said.

Sreemala says that this is the situation in almost every home where a family member is now in the US.

“After Trump, it has become worse. Earlier, there used to frequent robbery on the streets, but now they are shooting our children. Two incidents of shooting came into light within a month. How we are supposed to stay calm?” she asks.

Don’t speak in mother tongue in public places: Indians in US share dos and don’ts

Excerpts:

“Don’t talk to each other in Hindi or any other Indian language when you are at a public place in the US. It might land you in deep trouble.” This is one of the suggestions doing rounds among Indians in the US in their social media groups.

That sums up the fear psychosis among Indians, especially Telugus who are in large numbers in the US, after a Hyderabad-origin techie, Srinivas Kuchibhotla was killed and his friend Alok Reddy Madasanni was injured in a shooting at a Kansas City bar on Wednesday.

Stating that life is precious than anything else, Vikram Jangam, general secretary of the Telagnana American Telugu Association (TATA), has suggested a few dos and don’ts for community members and people of South Asian descent.

The tips he mentioned include:

•Do not get into argument with others at public places

•Should someone be provoking you, avoid confronting and please leave the place immediately.

•As much as we love talking in our mother tongue, it can often be misconstrued. Please see if you can communicate in English in public places.

•Isolated places can often be targets. Please avoid going or staying single.

•In emergency situations, please do not hesitate to call 911. Officers can come and help in such situations.

“Please be aware of your surroundings and say something if you see anything suspicious,” Vikram said.

This hate crime against the hapless Enginner has caused turmoil among the Indians at large..Can we trust the country for taking up a job..Can we trust the country for higher studies...Can we trust the country for going as a tourist...Trump's comments are encouraging..Hope better sense prevails and these attacks stop!! It will good to United States which is a melting pot of various cultures..Let the moral fabric of the country not be torn asunder by these racially motivated hate crimes against Indians (South East Asians), Jews and Blacks!! We pray that these rogue elements are contained and the citizens of US behave like a mature and balanced lot with sound judgment!!

In the last election cycle, Trump campaign gave voice to the racial bigots. Such people exist in every country but the latent anger in some of these southern and mid-western states were given seeming legitimacy during Trump campaign.

Even at the recent address to Congress, President Trump did not offer a full-throat-ed condemnation of the shooting. The shooter it seems thought the two Indians were Iranians as if it is a justification.

Many living living in USA for decades and kids born in this country (now adults) do not think themselves to be outsiders. They are as much of a citizen as any other person. Asians, and Indians among the Asians represent a financially powerful bloc but until now they have not engaged in political battles. Incidents such as this may change that outlook.

USA regardless of what anyone can say or do is becoming largely brown by year 2050 or so

What?

No freedom to speak language of choice?

Thank God I am in Msia...I speak 4 languages in my day to day dealings.

Will speaking in English save Indians from attack? :nono:

The face will clearly show the country one belongs to! :spy:

BTW, how can any Indian look like an American? :noidea:

Bad new continues!

After Kansas killing last week, another Indian shot dead

''Harnish Patel, 43, the owner of a convenience store in Lancaster County, South Carolina, was found dead of

gunshot wounds in the front yard of his home on Thursday, coroner and police officials said.

Patel closed his store and drove in his silver minivan to his nearby home where authorities believe he was

confronted by his killer. The store is about 6 km from his house, The Herald reported.''

In US especially during winder, people used to bury themselves under warm clothing to protect themselves from the bad weather and to endure the deadly cold climate.

They cover themselves from top to bottom with hats, frumpy scarves, leather jacket/deep coat, gigantic ski gloves, snow boots, etc

One cannot practically see the person who is already covered with different layers of warm clothing, except for his naked eyes.

And in such circumstances, it is the language that they speak enable others to identify them easily, more especially their race.

Even in English, it is accent that is more important.

Kansas shooting survivor recalls deadly night

The Kansas shooting took place in a bar where people don't cover themselves with heavy clothing!

The next shooting is targeted at an Indian, who is a convenience store owner.

Note: A convenience store is a small retail business that stocks a range of everyday items such as groceries, snack foods,

confectionery, soft drinks, tobacco products, over-the-counter drugs, toiletries, newspapers, and magazines.

Who said the people who went to a bar at Kansas on the day of shooting covered up themselves with heavy clothing........??

And who said that the Indian who was target at the convenience store dressed with warm clothing....?

Other information furnished via Hyperlink are totally irrelevant to the topic.

2.8 Mn American Indian ‘Targets’

“We really need to stand up and say something or these incidents will not stop,” Batra said.

“We will continue to be victims. We have not learnt the lesson well.”

He has a point. There are 2.81 million Indian Americans in the US but they are rarely seen or heard.
Here are examples of crimes that Indian Americans routinely put up with -

Hindu temples are vandalized regularly. One Hindu temple in Washington had the word “fear” spray painted with 7-8 windows smashed and the other had a swastika painted on it with the words “Get Out.”

Cash businesses run by Indians such as convenience stores are often robbed at gunpoint.

During Diwali and other pujas, American-Indian homes are robbed because it is well known fact that they own 22-carat gold ornaments.

“They target us because we are a quiet minority, law abiding and we don’t fight back. But we should prosecute and send a message,” said Subramanian, an information technology specialist, who has a sophisticated alarm system installed for his wife and two children.

From 1987 to 1993, Dotbusters attacked and harassed numerous Indians, burglarized homes and businesses in New Jersey. There were 58 cases and a number of perpetrators were bought to justice and tougher anti-hate legislation was passed.

Indians getting targeted is either by racial difference or because they make good money outside their motherland!

There are about 320 million people in USA and about 3 millions are so are of Indian origin. It is a small minority that has enormous wealth and power relatively speaking though it is not organized. In vast number of interactions of US citizens with immigrants or people of Indian origin there are no issues.

The isolated cases point to the fact that there are bigot in every place. Even one incidence is one too many.

At one time not too long ago, the job creation companies at Silicon Valley were dominated by IIT graduates who most often were founders as well. The internet, mobile technologies and automation has rapidly changed the job landscape in USA.

While this change has been happening, the local population in many areas is left behind with lesser skills due to poor public education system. These poor whites have a sense of loss of their American dream. They have to deal with multicultural bosses and they dont make enough to make their ends meet even while working 2 or 3 jobs at the same time.

Trump campaign provided a reason for their misery which is that immigrants (mainly undocumented) are the cause of their misery. Many people think immigrants in general have stolen their opportunities by enabling outsourcing of work to happen. They do not not know that the social security and medicare programs benefiting these people are sustained by the job creation capacities and innovation of the recent immigrants (which has always been true since the inception of Modern USA about 200+ years ago)

There is a backlash (white-lash actually) to Trump message. Still the number of incidents reported are far too small to be a concern yet. There are several orders of magnitudes of crimes of whites against whites, blacks against blacks etc.

In the last several weeks, the number of attacks against Jewish people, their temples and their cemeteries have been of the order of 800+ or so.

In comparison, the number of incidents against Asians or Indians have been insignificantly small.

Recently President Trump has signed an executive order reversing Obama administration policy of not selling guns to people who have had episodes of mental issues. Therefore anyone, even with mental disorders can buy a gun today. This coupled with the rhetoric of Trump administration against undocumented workers, and H1B visa holders has caused a situation of concern. His policy on H1B can affect India's economy in the near terms since 70% of outsourced work from USA goes to India in addition to affecting visa holders from these Indian companies. More than such policies, the rhetoric can have a more significant effect since poor people are looking to blame someone for their misery.

Based on my experience of living in USA all my adult life and having visited many countries, I can say that Americans in most parts of America are some of the most generous people I have ever come across..

Now scarcity is hitting them due to mega trends of automation, internet, Moor's law etc and their value system is being put to test.

The best thing for Indians in America is to not flaunt one's wealth and power. There will always be incidents of some kind here and there which are unavoidable. This is true when one lives in any place in the world.

I have visited a store owned by Patel brothers and fully agree with this comment posted on the web:

I was up in Boston visiting some friends and they told me about this interesting app called gopuff. At first

I was skeptical and am usually tentative when it comes to these delivery services, but after coming back from a

night out, the cravings got the best of me and I decided to try it out. I was shocked by the variety of items and

pleasantly surprised by the service. I ordered Ben & Jerry's as well as some chips and drinks. It came within

20 minutes and the delivery driver was very nice. Definitely recommend the service to anyone in Boston

and will be using it any time I go up there
.

This is just a sample of service we get in the Indian stores. :thumb:

Please also go on publishing notes on how people dress during Winter in U.S. which may help one who is desparately trying to prove 'one-up' over others.

Dear TKS Sir,

Racial intolerance prevails in most of the countries. In India people have caste differences and many honor killings happen

because of this, in India. But, when and Indian software engineer gets killed in the U S of A, parents of all the engineers panic

about the welfare of their children. It is quite natural.

Smt RR, while the natural instinct is to get concerned as a parent, one has to look at the chance of this happening. Just like the old adage that it is more dangerous to drive in a car to the airport than to fly in a plane, one has to look at the chance of anything happening. My point for parents in India to be not worried, at least not right now.
