This is another hate crime!! Sometimes Sikhs are misunderstood as Afghans/Talibans..

[h=1]Sikh man shot at in US, attacker allegedly shouted 'go back to your country'[/h]March 05, 2017 08:23

A 39-year-old Sikh man in the United States has been injured when an unidentified person shot him outside his home and allegedly shouted "go back to your own country."

The Sikh man was working on his vehicle outside his home in the city of Kent in Washington on Friday when he was approached by a stranger, who walked up to the driveway, the Seattle Times reported.

Kent police said an argument broke out between the two men, with the victim saying the suspect made statements to the effect of "go back to your own country." The unidentified man then shot him in the arm.

The incident is the latest in a series of troubling cases where members of the Indian community have been targeted in apparent hate crimes.

On Thursday, Indian-origin convenience store owner Harnish Patel, 43, of Lancaster in South Carolina was found dead of gun shot wounds in his yard.

It also comes close on the heels of the tragic shooting in Kansas last month of 32-year old Indian engineer Srinivas Kuchibhotla, who was killed when 51-year old US Navy veteran Adam Purinton opened fire at him and his friend Alok Madasani before yelling "get out of my country."

One day after 9/11/2001, one of the Sastrigal I know got into a major problem. He has a beard and long hair (typical sastigal style)

He was walking in NY City and a stranger came and gave him a slap telling him to go to Afganisthan and ride a camel.

Poor fellow, and he could not speak proper English. The idiot thought he may be related to a Taliban and must have complained. Suddenly a group of cops converged on him and went over his little bag. They questioned why he was carrying this white powder (Viboothi) !

Eventually they let him go and he was shaken up.

Since then he is doing fine and no such things happened to him.

When emotions run high, thinking goes out the window.

Some may think that the best thing is to do nothing….let such hate crimes go unchallenged…

Some may think let us do something to ..rise up…speak up…. or stand up…..

And there are instances where people protested to get justice rendered...

People who live in USA are the best judges... to decide on this IMO.

It is better to be careful in Surname... apperance.... language.. accent... and everything .....

Stop the Hate crimes against Indians in US

Smt RR, while the natural instinct is to get concerned as a parent, one has to look at the chance of this happening. Just like the old adage that it is more dangerous to drive in a car to the airport than to fly in a plane, one has to look at the chance of anything happening. My point for parents in India to be not worried, at least not right now.
I too hope and pray for the wellbeing of all the Indians living abroad, Sir. :pray2:

It is risk..... yes...

Srinivas Kuchibhotla’s shooting in US has raised questions which point back at us, Indians

No dream comes without risks.

Excerpt:

We do this while calling ourselves immigrants. Where is our solidarity with people in a country we have freely picked to be our home? When I was looking for housing as a student at Stanford in the early eighties, I was advised to stay within a certain limit beyond which there were ‘blacks, chicanos and philipinas’ – those are the exact words. More recently, I have heard parents boasting about their children studying in Stanford and living in Palo Alto. They make it a point to say ‘not east Palo Alto’, which has a large black population and people living in economically precarious conditions. How different are we when we tell African students in India to go home, or even closer home, ask students of the north-east of India to return home? Racist, anyone?

The trouble begins when we try to have our cake and eat it to. We want to be Americans, but not quite. We want to acquire an American accent, but not quite. We think America is a dream, but discover not quite as millions have reached the same spot with the same dreams. We think we are different and superior only to find that the competition is stiff and truly free. So what do we fall back on? Racism which we didn’t quite see in India because of the rat race and because we are all people of colour. As for English, more and more of us speak it poorly but we poke fun at other Americans who have accents while we think we do not.

Like all others, I pray for the Kuchibotla family and hope his widow can return to Kansas to complete her husband’s dreams. That dream comes with random gun violence in a society which is passing through an extremely restive phase, where the 'other' is seen as an enemy and violence can degenerate into deaths in a split second. As for racism, violence and hate in India, we really do not have lessons to give others. A dose of modesty will help. Try it.

[h=1]US man stalks Indians in Ohio, posts video saying they are taking away our jobs[/h]March 06, 2017 18:07

Days after the fatal shooting of Indian-born engineer Srinivas Kuchibhotla, an anti-immigration website that features photos and videos of Indian families relaxing in the city of Columbus, Ohio, has alarmed community members in the United States.

A post on the website SaveAmericanITJobs.com called Welcome to Columbus Ohio suburbs - Lets take a walk to Indian park features a video of Indian families hanging out in a public park in suburban Ohio. The videos description mentions how wealthy Indian families have moved in to suburban homes in Ohio as displacement of Americans has occurred. As of March 6, the video has over 41,000 views on YouTube.

A Buzzfeed report says that the website is created and maintained by Steve Pushor, a 66-year-old computer programmer from Virginia.

In the video, Pushors camera pans over people playing volleyball and children riding bikes, as he narrates: The number of people from foreign countries blows my mind out here. You see this whole area is all Indian, amazing. Its an amazing number of jobs have been taken away from Americans. The Indian crowd has ravished the Midwest. Its a takeover.(sic) Pushor sarcastically describes the park as a mini Mumbai.

Man tries to burn shop of an Indian-American and he now claims that he has mistaken for Arabs

Man tries to burn store run by Indian-Americans in US, says they are ‘Arabs’

A man in Florida was arrested for trying to set fire to a grocery store belonging to Indian-Americans, mistaking him for “Arabs”, just two weeks after a man in Kansas killed Srinivas Kuchibhotla, believing he was a middle-easterner.

The accused, 64-year-old Richard Lloyd, told police officers he would “run the Arabs out of our country” and he thought the owners of the grocery store were Muslims, and he was mad “due to what they are doing in the Middle East”.

“When the deputies arrived, they noticed the dumpster had been rolled in front of the doors and the contents were lit on fire,” said Port St. Lucie Sheriff Ken J Mascara.

“Upon seeing our deputies, the man put his hands behind his back and said ‘take me away.’”

The sheriff added: “It’s unfortunate that Mr. Lloyd made the assumption that the store owners were Arabic when, in fact, they are of Indian descent. Regardless, we will not tolerate violence based on age, race, color, ancestry, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, national origin, homeless status, mental or physical disability.”

Adam Purinton, a 51-year-old US navy veteran had earlier shot two Indian engineers at a bar in Olathe, Kansas on February 22, killing Kuchibhotla and injuring his friend Alok Madasani. A local American who tried to intervene, Ian Grillot was also shot and injured.
