Indian Women And GDP

Status
Not open for further replies.
In recent Asiad Indian women Did very well adding to the medal tally in Athletics, Boxing , Tennis,Discuss Throw and other events .

women made a big leap and are almost on par with men in medal count.

when it comes however to the workplace they are far behind.

India could boost its economic performance by creating

opportunities for women in workplace.

A 10 percent increase in GDP by closing gender gap could take india past 6.5 percent instead of around 5'9 or 6..

We need to realise that we are not utilising or under utilising the skills of women in boosting economic growth.

while we in some cases initially welcome women when they are single , it is a no-no after they after marriage and child birth

while some companies are generous and allow flexi hours or work from homes , others take a harsh view of them due to a mindset that they should stay home

instead of striving for work home balance

there is a basic male mindset that women should stay home.

only women in various forums keep shouting for equal opportunities and keep complaining about discrimination in wages and workplace harassment

in fact women in countries like US and french occupy as much as 20- 24 percent of senior positions .

in india we hardly come across these in large numbers as compared to males .

more than 70 percent leave the workplace prematurely owing to childbirth .

if india is to revive economically , we need to have institutions to support them on a large scale in work place.

will it take place in our lifetime?

I doubt whether more representation of women in all kinds of work places will increase productivity. One reason is that ultimately, the work-efficiency of a large, random group (number) of women is not much different from any random, similar group of men. Secondly, given the latest trends regarding sexual molestation in workplaces and modifications to law aimed at combating these, I think more time, energy, money and productivity will be lost if there is a mix of genders in all kinds of workplaces.

It will be good if members will furnish any studies made in this topic and the findings.

I am talking of increasing of numbers of women. it may not at the cost of men in a booming economy.

even on replacement basis in certain tasks , they might outscore men.

'Japanese CEO of Akira Matsumato of the japanes snack manufacturer Calbee found that on appointing more female executices, revenues and earnings have increased and

net sales have grown threefold. while there is no proof the former lead to the latter. With the CEOs commitment to womens cause , the corporate dynamism has increased with a

prominent role for women.likewise,Daiwo securities has appointed women as exec officers to improve sales with promising results'. refer mint oct 4 , 2014

there might be a positive change in india also and is worth trying

Kamath brought up a lot of ladies in ICICI bank and many have distinguished themselves in top positions.

ICICI has become a leader in banking industry with a high number of women employees in officers and senior executive positions.

I worked in a large (all India) institution for more than 30 years and the common observation of many top executives had been that the more women employees in a particular division, the less the productivity! When I happened to officially visit the Singapore branch of an Indian establishment, the head of the set-up there told me that if he had the powers, he would not appoint not even one Indian female or a Keralite male; the former come to office mostly to waste their time chatting with their colleagues while the latter invariably try to spread worker indiscipline, a.k.a communism. But he was full of praise for the Chinese women employed there because they won't even waste one minute chit-chatting in the office except the good morning wish!

Hence, if Japan or China does something,it need not necessarily mean that the same medicine will work for India.

modi has been talking of demographic dividend

if nearly 50% of population [women] below35 yrs sits home , What do you expect to achieve?

we do not need a singaporean to tell us about the work ethic of indian women.

this anti women sentiment is a mindset of the indian male.

unless it changes fast , we are in for troubled times ahead

We are getting into tangles here, ignorance on all counts.
1. What is modi doing here?
2. Our dharma specified that women are the lakshmi of the house and have to be protected and treated well. One who ill treats any woman - mother, wife, relatives, destitutes will perish. Women were the grihalakshmis, and had absolute power in areas of home management and took part in all major decisions.
3. Women, in the past and today too, form a major work force in many fields - agriculture, trade, services, education. Our women had more power and authority well before their western counterparts.
4. Today the choice is available for both to work sharing the family burden and/or build individual capital base; or one works while the other manages home. The choice is left to the couple and the opportunities available. As long as they do not evolve into family breaking set.
Anti woman sentiment, singaporean adviser and (oppressive) indian male - all these are irrelevant and not tenable.

1. Modi was smart enough to point out to two ladies accompanying him to suggest that they are playing a prominent role as working women

2.when an established order is under threat due to education and employment of women in high value jobs,

stories are put out using dharma as a crutch to keep them home and subdued

3. it is grudgingly conceded that they are making a mark in workforce.

4.An insinuation is being made that they are likely to become a family breaking set.

families which do not support working women wholeheartedly deserve to be broken and its members thrown on the roads or old age homes.

Shri Sarang,

It seems we have like views on this topic. While I will not go into point # 2 above, I agree that points 3 & 4 are very true. But there may be people who do not know how the Indian village, and the Indian agriculture, fishery and a large number of businesses and enterprises work, even today; they have, probably, been mesmerised by Modi and his showmanship. We will see how the Indian people judge Modi, in 2019.

Till then let us say, "AaDum varai avar AaDaTTumEn"!

1. Modi was smart enough to point out to two ladies accompanying him to suggest that they are playing a prominent role as working women

This does not mean anything. Women need not be in salaried employment in order to enhance GDP. Many states are coming round to the idea that women can contribute to productivity by being at home (not simply sitting but by giving them opportunities to engage in economically productive activites which are essentially home-based.

Even otherwise many rural and semi-urban women have been engaged in different kinds of productive activities in many parts of India and there have also been specific industries dependent on female workers exclusively, like cashew, dry fish, macaroni, spice- and curry- powders production, Lijjat and similar Papad brands, pickles manufacturing and so on. Why, even making "poonals, pavithram, koorccham, etc." for vaideeka purposes is now being done by women of the weakest sections of the society!

These are irrelevant comments made only to show that your stock of valid logical arguments have been exhausted.
