I always felt that iit was overrated and does not deserve the hype.
Ok the iitians who graduated in the early 1990s made their mark in silicon valley. But then it was a boom time for dotcom industry, and with such fertility of ideas, anything would germinate. Which is what happened to many iitians – right place, right time. Prior to that most iitians in the usa were considered no better or no worse than other Indian engineers.
Nowadays, we have youth entering iits after multi filteration processes, and what qualifies is those who know how ot attack a prescribed set of application oriented problems. Gone are the free thinkers or anyone with a creative mind.also they graduate with so much hype and ego, that many are proved useless for the normal run of the mill, nose on the grind technology research.
Which is why I think, the second tier engineering colleges are doing a great job. One such good product is tessy Thomas. Tessy, like abdul kalam, is proof of the sound infrastructure for education available in select Indian colleges. One necessarily did not have to go abroad, if one is intent on a career in application research careers as offered by bhabha, iis or drdl.
Here is an interesting story of india’s rocket lady.
