INS Sumitra began the process of evacuating stranded Indians on Sunday afternoon from Al Mukallah sea port in Yemen.

Earlier in the morning, INS Mumbai reached Djibouti harbour with 441 evacuees on board from Yemen's port city of Aden.

Along with Indians, 179 people from 17 countries were evacuated from Aden on Saturday.

"A safe haven called INS Mumbai. In humanitarian effort, along with Indians 179 others from 17 countries evacuated from Aden yesterday," tweeted MEA spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin.

Aden is currently reeling under heavy firing between Saudi-led coalition and the Houthi rebels.

On Saturday night, India had pulled out over 439 Indian nationals from Aden amidst heavy shelling in an operation codenamed "Rahat".

The Indian Navy, in a release said the operation was carried out "despite mounting difficulties and challenges".

Indian operation in Yemen helps 26 countries

NEW DELHI: India is executing one of the most challenging rescue operations in strife-torn Yemen, pulling out its own and citizens from at least 26 other countries.

On Monday, India evacuated over 1,000 (574 from Sana'a by air and 479 from Al Hodeida by sea) executing a sophisticated air-sea operation showcasing its maritime power.

Until now, India has evacuated over 3,500 of its nationals and 225 citizens of at least 26 countries in a rare gesture. Maldives has joined 25 countries requesting India for help. The fact that such requests continue to come is being seen as a vote of confidence in Indian capability. India has evacuated nationals of almost all its neighbours (Pakistan has pulled out 11 Indians) and taken in US, UK, German and Malaysian nationals among others.

Yemen rescue operation: Why India is better than the rest

India's rescue operations in Yemen have been widely appreciated and 23 countries seeking help in evacuating their nationals is testimony of this fact. The rescue operations in Yemen were probably one of the toughest for India since the battle is not just fierce, but there are several stake holders in this war. [Can Pakistan afford to interfere in Yemen?] The Shia Houthi rebels, Al-Qaeda, the Yemen government and also Saudi Arabia are all locked in war and this scenario could be extremely confusing for any rescue team since none know who the enemy really is. Pakistan evacuating 11 indians is headline news in media, but the himalayan effort of indian govt, minister VK singh and testimonials from the representative of foreign govts, and people rescued are relegated to also ran news with little space cover. And some posters are awed and thrilled by the presstitute agenda.

Media is devoting more paper space and air time to abusing, denouncing VK singh and trolling him. VK singh stayed in sanaa to supervise and coordinate the entire rescue operation.

An Indian media house quoted him saying, Yemen rescue operation is not as exciting as his visit to Pakistan embassy.
