kAlinga narthanam in tamil

Though the genius of Oothukadu venkata kavi's kAliya narthanam cannot be fully captured, here is an attempt.

Fear of garuda makes kAliya to shelter in the depths of lake ‘kAliya hrada’, served by Yamuna river. A lone kadamba tree is in the lake banks. kAliya develops wrath on others to keep itself safe. When the young Krishna jumps into the lake, kAliya coils around him and constricts him. When Krishna’s figure expands to dance on the hoods of kAliya, kAliya’s fears are removed, wrath is subdued, enabling him to go back to his original habitat.

kAliya narthana is also a metaphor.

Diti-aditi are complementary pairs of nature. Diti divides, decays and in the process creates diversity or differences. Aditi integrates, evolves complex forms with unity in diversity. In consciousness domain, diti are the fears, jealousies, greed that divide/decay us. Aditi is the love that integrates us.

In consciousness domain, kAliya is the ‘wrath’ we develop on others due to our fears. It is offspring of diti (fear) or daitya. In consciousness domain, Krishna is the bliss due to unbounded love in our heart. It is offspring of aditi or Aditya. To subdue the wrath of kAliya in our hearts that arises due to our fears, we need to let that supreme bliss that arises out of love to dance on our hoods (our senses and mind).

murA means encompassing. murA are the vices that ‘encompass’ us. We invoke this Krishna, the supreme bliss, to dance in our hearts, so that not only kAliya the wrath runs away, but also the murAs (vices) that cloud our senses get terrified and run away.
