Kanjeevaram weaves a new style

The craze for Kanjeevaram never dies..The loom is reinventing itself by the day...Known for its resplendent colors, weight and stiff drape,it is transforming itself as a sort of fashion symbol for the youngsters courtesy the modern designers who are breaking the Kanjeevaram barriers to create new designs, motifs and modern outfits on the loom

"While older women prefer thinner borders and deeper colours for their saris, younger women can carry bolder borders, sometimes as wide as 20 inches, with ease. Neon colours have made a huge comeback on the ramp, and kanjeevarams are not immune to this trend, adding to their younger appeal"

"For Lulla though, there are immense possibilities for bespoke designs, but only if the weave is treated like a fabric and not a sari. Her collection featuring lehengas and pant suits in jewel tones use the kanjeevaram exclusively. A designer kanjeevaram, either a sari or an outfit, can cost anything upward of ~50,000."

It used to be only pure zari work or thread work done on Kanjeevaram sarees. Then came the tested zari which needed only dry cleaning.

Now a days the artificial zari (it was called Japan zari) has been introduced in the weave. It never turns dark and these sarees can be washed

at home. They cost much less - between 2,000/ and 4,000/. The newly introduced 'silk cotton' sarees are available at the same rate, with grand

zari work. Since these sarees are very light to wear, they sell like hot cakes. :)

Till today I can not understand the so called craze for Kanjeevaram sarees?

Whats the big deal yaar?

Dear Madam,

You have to come to Chennai to see the craze for these sarees...Look at the crowds in Pothy's RmKv, Chennai silks, Saravana and the old order of Nalli and Kumaran

I had gone to one of the shops last week..

The Manager taught me how to decipher a pure zari saree which is worth its weight in silver..In sarees all that glitters is not silver!

You have become a true Jain!

Dear Renu,

When you tell the reason for NOT buying silk, the shopkeeper will immediately show the 'ahimsA silk' variety.

How did you miss it? Those sarees do not have many combinations and are coarse due to more number of knots.

BTW, Kanjeevaram sarees are thicker than other varieties like Arani silk, Banarasi silk, Dharmavaram silk, Gadwal silk,

Kora silk, Mysore silk, Patola silk, Pochampally silk and Venkatagiri silk.

It is said that polyester threads are added with silk now a days. Anyway, my vote is ONLY for Poly silk sarees with the

usual Pattu colour combination! They cost very less and could be machine washed!

Renuka!! don't be so sure about your ahimsa satvaguna. The chiffon georgette is made of polyester filaments. These polyester filaments come from Naphtha. Naphtha comes from the crude oil pumped out from the underground oil-fields. The crude oil is a product of ancient dead organic bodies like animals, trees etc., which have been converted into the crude oil (hydrocarbons) by the earth's heat and pressure over millennium. So the georgette chiffon that hugs you so effortlessly may be the molar teeth of a baby dinosaurs that died of hiccups. LOL.

I agree with vgeneji's comment. This is humorous post.
By the way I too am vegetarian by choice, i do not preach it to others. There is no greatness associated just because of my choice to be vegetarian. We all should try to do the least harm to other living things, some harm is and will be done to living things by all of us. Living things include plant, molds, spores, fungus, insects, animals (including Humans). So we all destroy some other living organism most of the time.
